i am like the #1 carver and prince of cannock appreciator. if these two characters have 100 fans i am one of them, if they have none then i'm dead and in the ground etc etc
something i noticed abt post erdrick trilogy games is that there's little hints and comments towards each subsequent hero's unique personalities and quirks. they're very small and minimal, but they're definitely there.
dq5 is the most explicit, with characters occasionally commenting on how the protag is serious and frowning most of the time, with moments where he's still clearly traumatized from his childhood.
dq7 has characters (admittedly mostly maribel, but ruff's chats also imply this) that call the hero easy-going and a generally happy guy. he's also implicitly a people-pleaser based on his childhood friendships and what the citizens of estark observe about his relationship with kiefer and maribel
but my absolute favorite has to go to the singular trait the dq6 hero has that's brought up throughout the game, even by random npcs:
that he's very handsome.
while every hero has at one point been called attractive in each game and had ship teases, rek's unique in that in both his own game and dq11, his charm is like his one defining characteristic.
his lucky dip actions further reinforce this with him doing a fucking sword dance with a rose in his mouth, and his singing being described as melodic.
attempting to finally play through dq6 again. i can see why it’s called the ugly duckling of the dq series. still up to standard but definitely feels underbaked in some aspects. it also feels like a lowkey precursor to the problems that would plague dq7 in that they’re still figuring out how to spice up the class system
9 and 11 are the only dragon quests who do Not have remakes so far, so i'm curious when (if ever) they'll revisit these games considering they're probably the most well-known internationally.
i would riot if they try to go the hd2d remake route for 9, seeing as it's already in 3d, because as much as i love pixel graphics, 8 and 11 have already proven the story and cinematic potential 3d models have far outweigh the gorgeous pixel graphics hd2d remakes
rating the dragon quest protags based on how many living parents/parental figures they still have
SPOILERS BTW FOR EVERY MAINLINE DRAGON QUEST
DQ1: 0/5 - parents are never mentioned, therefore they are dead. also if you account the bad ending they are absolutely ultra dead bc the hero's entire bloodline was confirmed to be murked
DQ2: 3/5 - since there are three protagonists, the results are a bit skewed. but princess moonbrooke's parents are 100% dead
DQ3: 2.5/5 - i give a half point because technically ortega is alive for like. 3/4ths of the game. also the xenlong thing. you've also got a grandad who is. present
DQ4: 1/5 - they should technically receive no points, but their grandad Is alive and party chat implies he cares very much about his grandchild in spite of how he talks AND he lets you heal for free. so a single point it is
DQ5: 3.5/5 - while you could say the ortega reasoning applies as above, your kids also count as protags, therefore his parents (if you didn't get killed during a fight 💀) are alive and well by this ranking's standards. depending on whether you marry a briscoletti or bianca, points may get docked as bianca's mom bought the farm, but the two briscoletti ladies have both parents alive and well. hence the half point
DQ6: 5/5 - they are very much alive throughout the game, and if you account the other world he technically has two sets. so yeah. though the other world does get erased by the end of the game so uh 😶
DQ7: 10/5 - "hey auster, why did god give you TWO sets of biological parents who love and care for you?????"
DQ8: 1/5 - eight technically has trode as a parental figure of sorts, but he sucks ass :( his grandad is also alive but i mean. 🐹
DQ9: 0.5/5 - i can see the argument for aquila being a parental figure, so there's a half point since he's alive for the majority of the game. i'm not a believer of this but i'm a woman of fairness so i'll give him this. he does die tho
DQ10: ?????/5 - hard to rank this one since the point of the game is to be reborn so idk whether the first parent death should count or not. also i'm not sure if parents exists for all races i didn't play the game yet 🥹🥹🥹🥹
DQ11: 1/5 - amber is alive throughout the whole game :) also rab i guess, but he comes in mid game and eleven already had a grandad but he died. his bio parents are super dead tho
i am so incredibly curious about the development of dragon quest 12, since it was announced at the same time as 3’s remake yet we’ve received no follow up information since the title drop.
no teasers, no graphics, not even a single hint of info outside of the title. i’m believing that it’s in a kind of development limbo what with the death of toriyama and the fact that we Know he was most likely preoccupied with dragon ball related things for at least two years due to the release of daima. idk his relationship with squeenix, but we do know that daima will almost certainly be the last “official” dragon ball-related thing for a While due to his estate’s feud with toei. im not sure if dragon quest will be affected, but all we can really do is wait and see.
regardless, i really hope they maintain his style and that when they said 12 will be more dark, they mean that squeenix finally gave in and raised the age rating to avoid the constant clashes with the ratings’ board. i get from a business standpoint all ages is almost a must, but it’s dragon quest. people will buy it no matter what, especially in japan 💀
