     my research project for the winter was wrapping up and coincided with my finals which ended up dragging me every which way but this blog,  so i apologize for the absence!  i’m going to be more active now that my lab is in a short hiatus until march,  so i’ll have plenty of time to write until then;  to keep me a bit more grounded on this blog,  though,  i’d really like to plot some relationships for fai to build further from.  he’s fairly flexible with the types that can develop especially since he’s experienced a bit of every sort of dynamic regardless of the breadth of it.  liking this gives me permission to raid your IMs or plot over discord depending on what you prefer!!

It wasn’t unusual for the mage and the ninja to find time to spar together– although that practice seemed to be put on hold after they were both thrown into this strange world without the rest of their comrades. Kurogane would deny that he had settled into Spirale, but things were slowly starting to fall in place for them again, even if they weren’t entirely the norm.

This.. was definitely one of those things that stuck out, as the ninja found himself doing something he never had before; crouching behind a large mound of snow shaped like a fort as he worked on making a pile of snowballs. Fai had apparently entered the two of them into some sort of competition, and this was what they were supposed to do– throw snow at each other like they were children or something.

But it wouldn’t be the mage if he didn’t do things like this, would it.

“Oi! You done over there yet?” Kurogane called out towards Fai, making no effort to peer over the fort as he continued working on his ammunition. “Che, this is a pain in the ass– why couldn’t we just train like we usually do? It’s cold as hell out here.”

       “  not yet,  kuro-tan! tsk tsk,  so impatient.  take some time to enjoy the moment more,  why don’t you?  ”     ───  his chest heaves as he speaks,  arms transferring large scoops of snow from the blanket behind him to his own impressively shaped fort.  magic can only do so much and he supposes he should save it for a more pressing occasion;  here he relies solely on the skills accumulated from the kingdom of celes and its ever-frigid climate.  no doubt fai has accrued his own brand of styling but he must admit that most of it stems from ashura and the time they had spent together.

        fingers trace runes that serve as nothing more than decoration and along the front facing kurogane is a family of cats and dogs similar to the one he had drawn for them in ōto.  the game has yet to start but he lobs a snowball across the field to land just shy of the ninja’s feet.

        “  training as per usual is fine but it’s no fun if we don’t take advantage of our surroundings;  i thought you knew that already!  ”     ───  another ball is compacted in his hands and he tosses it up and down in his hold before tossing it over again.     “  besides,  i haven’t gotten to play... er,  practice in the snow like this since i was little.  something tells me that mister no-nonsense hasn’t done it  ever  so it’ll be good to say you have the experience if someone were to ask in the future!  ”

✧ “If I could use my alchemy then this ice sculpting would be a snap! But… I kind of feel like dead weight without it. Guess that happens when you suddenly can’t use something that’s as second nature to you as breathing.” Somehow it felt like Ryza was making ice sculpting out to be more difficult than it actually was. Alchemy wasn’t really necessary.

But her sculpture of Klaudia was, well… hm. It had been a long time since she’d last seen her dearest friend, but this definitely didn’t look right.

“What do you think, mister? This doesn’t look at all like a beautiful girl, does it?”

        “  there’s always time to learn from the beginning;  you have nothing but while you’re waiting for your magic to come back,  right?  ”     ───  he hopes that it’s reassuring,  but there’s no telling what might set someone off where others may take the compliment,  his head tilts as he speaks and he regards her and her sculpture slowly,  traces of a laugh following his words when his voice mellows just this side of endeared.     “  but i understand.  it’s a bit of a struggle for myself as well,  even though it’s been quite a long while since i even began using it again...  ”

        “  i think it’s charming!  a bit abstract,  i’d say,  but it’s tastefully done.  who is it supposed to be?  ”

     the event is over and that means we’re back on our regularly scheduled chaos!  fai loves the cold because it reminds him of his home worlds and now that november is bringing with it some chilly times,  he’s more than ready to get into whatever festive mood comes with the next holiday!  so maybe??  like this for a tiny starter?

        “  big puppy,  you ask too many questions!  what,  you’re going to be  UPSET  if i don’t bring you along?  i’ve outlived you by many lifetimes and i can assure you that i’ll be alright on my own to run menial chores,  kuro-sama.  ”     ───  it’s a teasing coo when he speaks,  lips pursed in a pout when his fingers wave to distract the baby.  cold,  fai concludes,  bunching his coat closer to his core as wind billows behind him through the crevice in the door that he’s propped open with his foot.  if sakura decides to come and visit,  he certainly doesn’t have the supplies to host a proper meal for her arrival and he likes to be prepared,  after all.

        “  how uncharacteristically  skittish  of you.  for everyone’s sake,  let’s stick to our preordained tropes,  shall we?  being sullen and  whiny  is part of my job description,  not yours.  ”     ───  he laughs and takes a page out of kurogane’s book when his hand finds a brief home in short raven hair,  the motion rustling the strands about until it’s unkempt and sticking in every direction.     “  i’ll be back soon;  try not to destroy anything while i’m gone!  if you’re good,  you could get candy from the store as a treat!  isn’t that fun?  i might even bring you some cookies as an extra reward.  ”

✦ :  CLOWKEY. 

“Maybe you got me confused for someone else? People can have the same name but…” He had to have been confused, right?. Yeah, that had to be it but she was now very confused herself. His question quickly had her confusion not be the main focus before nodding happily! “Yes! I got lots of traits like a wolf and i can do magic too! Oh oh oh! I can run much faster now too. I can also smell and see better! It’s amazing!! I havent done any magic spells yet but I know i can do it if i tried!” 

        “  perhaps...  but you look a bit too similarly for me to make such a bad mistake...  ”     ───  still he trucks on,  bouncing quickly to his cheery demeanor as she speaks and her energy easily bleeds into his own.  it’s not his costume,  no,  but he’s excited nonetheless when he laughs,  smile replacing the confused furrow of his brow.     “  is that so?  i can’t do any with you now but that certainly sounds like a fun transformation.  if you haven’t tried any spell yet,  why not try now?  before you run out of time.  ”

✦ :  SHINNOTSUYOSA. 

“Like I have a damn choice! Y’think I would make myself look like this on purpose?!” though Kurogane was still kicking himself for allowing that child version of Sakura to talk him into dressing this way, then eating something without realizing what its effects would end up being. He couldn’t trust a damn thing in this place– he should’ve known that by now. “And don’t call me cute!”

Choosing to ignore the comment about his reliability, Kurogane continued to drag Fai along behind him; and though his grip around the other’s wrist remained still, his fingers loosened around it ever so slightly. “No, this isn’t the prosthetic. ‘Don’t think all that metal would agree with this form, so it’s been replaced for now.  But even without it, I ain’t having any fun in this stupid get-up.”

It felt strange, for that dull ache to no longer be present at the base of his shoulder anymore. It was almost as if the feeling was apart of Kurogane now; that he’d long forgotten what it was like to not feel a physical part of himself missing. It wasn’t worth dwelling on, however– it was just how things were, and he was fine with that.

“You being mad at me was better than the alternative,” the words come out without so much as a second thought, and there’s almost a hint of gentleness to them that gives Kurogane away; but he’s quick to turn his head back in the other direction after catching sight of Fai’s little trick. “But I know that, idiot. I just meant it’s been a while since you’ve been like this.” The pair finally come to a stop, and Kurogane releases the other from his grip; pointing one of his clawed fingers to the top of a rather tall tree that stands before them. “If you’re so eager about this form, do something useful and go up there. What we’re looking for is at the top.”

        “  maybe  you’ve had a change in heart!  you’re very unpredictable,  and it would be bad on my character to just assume that this all happened by chance because you ate that candy without thinking anything strange would come of it;  how would i know?  ”     ───  cheeky is his response when he laughs;  it’s so easy to mess with him.  calm and composed was his demeanor when they’d first met and to see it for so long without interjection for a frustrated sputter or two was odd.  for such a strange turn of events,  this certainly felt more normal than ever.     “  you  are  cute!  again,  you want me to be dishonest!  hmph,  what a  bad  dad you are,  never a role model to follow with these things.  ”

        “  see,  i think this  IS  a good thing.  you won’t need to worry about maintenance and all of that annoying pain while the effects are still active.  ”     ───  his choppy pace quickly morphs into a leisurely prance before it twists playfully into a skip,  arm swinging jovially at his side to match kurogane’s long stride.  curse tall people.  when his eyebrows knit like that,  it’s difficult to discern the source of it but fai likes to believe that he’s mapped out each unique tic.  index finger pokes between the creases     “  and don’t think too hard about it.  i can see the cogs turning in your head.  take things as they come,  okay?  ”

        “  i suppose you’re right,  i could see where you might be coming from.  only just a bit.  it’s fine,  you’ll get used to it eventually!  i certainly have.  and don’t worry,  i won’t have to  bite  you again.  ”

        “  oh i almost forgot that puppies can only bark at the bottom of trees,  not climb up them.  another job for  BIG KITTY,  i suppose.  ”     ───  one more jab before his hands find their place against the branches to swing himself upwards with lithe ease,  prowling once he’s found his footing.  head turns left and right when he stops to stoop on his heels,  chin propped against his palm,  peering down at kurogane.  when he talks again,  it’s with a bit of  confusion  that colors the laugh a different tone.     “  what are we looking for again?  i was too busy having fun to remember,  unlike  someone.  candy?  trick or treat!  ”

✦ : JUNAOU. 

            “It’s quite the ameowzing experience.” He licks his paw aimlessly, looking up at the now-taller figure upon him. “Albeit a bit inconvenient in pawces.”

        “  cute,  oh my goodness you’re so  cute!  ”     ───  struck silly,  it takes him a moment to truly process what arjuna is actually saying.     “  inconvenient,  maybe,  but i’m sure there are plenty of opportunities that have opened up as well,  right?  ”

✦ : ANIMASPHERE. 

    “ The only thing we have to worry about in here is the volunteers dressed to be frightening. Not that they accomplish it in the slightest. “ a roll of the eyes, the question earning a thoughtful pause. “……I will admit, they are helpful for things like this. However, being able to smell every scent within ten feet of me and breaking tree branches is not something I could get used to so quickly. “

        “  i think you should give them credit,  they’re trying their best!  and it isn’t like they ate the candy to actually be scary;  they were probably told the effect ahead of time to avoid them.  ”     ───  it’s a sound of pity that clicks his tongue,  eyes pulled in cheerful crescents regardless.     “  wow,  that’s pretty impressive!  but i can’t imagine that it’d be pleasant.  there are a handful that even i can tell haven’t taken a shower in a while....  ”

✦ :  PATIENTPRINCESS. 

❝ Yes, I’m also relieved that everyone seems to be having a nice time! Although… I would still like to go back to normal as soon as possible. ❞ She admits to him, albeit a bit sheepishly as she hovers beside the mage. His offer, however, quickly distracts her and further cheers her up as she finds herself quickly nodding along to the suggestion, ❝ I’ll do the best that I can! Maybe we can start with the maze? I should be able to get us through it rather quickly if I can just float through… ❞

        “  awww,  but you’re just so cute like this!  these costumes make you and kuro-puppy look so adorable...  well,  not to say that you aren’t under normal circumstances.  ”     ───  affectionate thing,  he reaches to ruffle her hair purely out of habit but pauses before his hand gets too close;  will it pass through?  will it not?  no,  best not make her uncomfortable just in case.  instead his fingers wring in front of him as he nods in kind,  mirroring her motions.  current ghost and vampire or not,  fai won’t ever let their big-little kitty link fade.     “  what a great idea!  i can’t say that i’m very good at them so i’ll be in your care,  princess.  ”
