Mastery Journal: Editing
This class was packed with more information then cold be covered in a month and we seemed to not had much class time but the lectures were interesting and informative when we had them. I watched a good amount of Lynda videos on Avid and the more I worked on it the easier it got to understand and get used to it’s design. The most frustrating thing was that it would crash constantly. Making it difficult to rely on, I prefer Da Vinci Resolve and in using that and also going to cameras website and reading over their specific workflow helped as well to try to make sense of much the technical jargon and industry standard delivery methods.
Technical aspects aside I enjoyed the class and it opened my eyes to how important workflow is and having a clear plan of what that is going to be well before post. As far as editing styles and how it may be used to invoke emotion or further the narrative I felt weren’t really discusses but in playing with raw footage you get to see the puzzle pieces of the film come to life and the editor is a huge component to crafting that narrative.
What also stuck with me was Rob saying, “You know what you filmed but now we get to the real story.”
I enjoying editing just not so much on Avid but I love being the first person to see the movie.

Mastery Journal _Directing Talent
This month went by so fast and was such a fun and informative class. I really felt like I grew as a filmmaker in this class. I came into the class not wanting to direct but now I enjoy it and can see myself directing in the future. The class coming from the actor’s perspective was such a great way for us to fully grasp the whole experience and the collaborative way of filmmaking.
At first, I was taken back that the instructor was an actor first and a director second but he also was a writer. This made me happy in the end because as a stand up comic I am a writer, actor, then a filmmaker. I can see that in this industry you have to not only understand all roles but work well with others and understand that you may at any moment be any of those roles.
Understanding the “As If” scenarios and action verbs and that acting is the honest pursuit of an objective from moment to moment. That is so real, what the actors are doing o film is doing and being those characters. I learned that storytelling needs to be studied throughout my career.
Our assignments were excellent to show us what we needed to know and where our weaknesses are and how we can improve on them. I felt pushed to grow week by week with the assignments. The examples shown in class were relevant to the process and to build on the concepts presented in our readings and lectures.
The Uta Hagen questions, the vision statements, and casting were helpful to understand the actors perspective and what a director needs to look for from talent. How to pull the performances that need to show on film by respecting the actors and encouraging them.
You can get free gift cards while discovering things online, just like I did. It's called Swagbucks. Use my link to try it out.http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/?cmd=sb-register&rb=33184647&cmp=72&cxid=1420-tumblr
