"You heard her, Marie."
"I don't even know if I could handle another child. Marie is enough of a handful as it is."
"Being a parent is just so stressful."
…Double and Valentine—she swears this is why she’s not affiliated with you two any longer.
You wish.
Double can you get me a bone saw
"What’s in it for me?"
“I don’t know, I can find you a baby to eat or something.”
“You like that, right?”

"What's in it for me?"
She listens intently as Double speaks, brimming with curiosity for the other nun. People of other religions always fascinated her. Well, people in general, but this particular person she would hope to be seeing around if she were to continue to volunteer at the church.
"You haven’t heard of Buddhism? Oh, well… in that case, I’d be happy to tell you anything you’d be curious about in the future. In fact, I’m hoping I’ll be able to learn more about your religions as well…" The headdress Double wore was especially remarkable.
"…Ah - yes," Kiara removes her gaze from Double’s habit and back to her face. She’s pleased to see the other nun smiling. "Again, I’m sorry. It was a conflict with a friend, was all, he’s not too used to this place yet… Ah, but I do usually have more control over myself, I promise." She clears her throat lightly, happy to put that topic behind them.
"As for what he said, exactly… Oh, yes, he fondly mentioned that you were a very diligent worker.”
"A strong member of the church indeed… Hee, hee. What do you think? Would you agree with that?"
Double wasn't especially interested in Buddhism, as was the case with Pucci's Catholicism. After all, Double was a creation of the Trinity, and so she subscribed to their teachings absolutely, without any real care for alternatives. True, she learned a little about Christianity, but it was just what was necessary for her and Pucci's co-existence. Perhaps she could do the same with Sister Sesshouin, but she had a feeling the woman wanted a more in-depth discussion.
"I have not. No such religion exists in my world, and I'm sure the Divine Trinity does not exist in yours. And I would not be opposed an exchange, but perhaps at a later time. When you're feeling better."
The other woman continued to speak, but her explanation of why she acted the way she did prompted a smirk from Double. "Yes, I know that feeling. One of my dear friends was recently brought here as well. And she was never the most agreeable person, so I'm afraid her relocation has only furthered her stress. I'm sure she'll adapt in time, like your friend will." It did warm whatever passed for a heart in Double to see Valentine in distress, but there were more important things to discuss at the moment. Like Pucci.
What Kiara had to say from Pucci was rather cryptic, which Double found annoying. A straight answer, while understandably unlikely, would have been very useful in divining the man's intentions. Obviously, neither of them trusted each other, but Double didn't know if Pucci considered her a threat or not. Kirara's answers didn't help.
"Diligent. Strong. Yes, I think that is accurate. And rather flatting, I suppose." Double wasn't sure if Pucci was complimenting her or not, and Kiara's laugh made her suspect there was something else going on. Did she know? It was better not to press the question and make her suspicious, just in case she didn't. "Father Pucci is the kind of priest this city needs. Offering guidance to those who need it, and not afraid to do what needs to be done. A strong man, because the weak can't survive on their own. That is what we need to be as well."
Double tilted her head back a bit, the smile falling from her face. She opened one eye to stare directly at Kiara, exposing a single crimson pupil. "I wonder what he would say about you. I will have to ask the next time I see him."

Perhaps it really was better for her to hide her abilities. Practically everyone she was acquainted with back at home knew of them, but then again, this wasn’t home. However, at the same time, in Gensokyo there were things like spell card rules and timers to keep this all in check. Here, there wasn’t anything of the sort and Sakuya was free to show everyone just how fearsome the ability to manipulate time was.
…Not like she was doing a great job so far, considering how she had just used up one of three uses over a caterpillar.
The mention of only ‘the Goddesses’ being able to do what she could coming from Double amused Sakuya ever so slightly. It wasn’t the first time the maid had been told that, and probably not the last. With Gensokyo’s scope of abilities, nothing really surprised her anymore no matter the species or rank of whom it belonged to.
"Ahah, none taken. Rest assured, I am not divine, nor do I wish to be. Still, it is quite strange to hear some talk about how my type of powers belong only to goddesses and be a human, myself."
A little more than strange, actually. It was like being marveled for having two eyes because only deities have them, or something. In essence, something completely normal to you being completely fantastical and unheard of somewhere else.
"Your line of work…? Ah, where do you work?" It wasn’t really that hard to tell judging by the nun’s clothes of choice, but it might be rude to make an assumption either way. "It’s a shame that you don’t get to relax often, but it is good that you enjoy your work, still. It is very important."
She laughed softly and gave a dismissive shake of her hand. Of course, there was no way she would ever speed the time up of the seasons. Such a thing was not (usually) meant to be tampered with. “Of course. Mother Nature will go at her own pace and decide when the seasons are ready to bloom. A pleasure to meet you, as well. I am Sakuya.”
It was odd how much things varied from world to world. Domains like time and space were so utterly vast that they comprised whole dimensions and made up the fabric of reality. They were concepts, and at the same time, concrete things. Only the Trinity themselves could manipulate the buildings blocks of reality without the right kind of theonite, and even that idea was laughable. But this girl treated her power so lightly, as if the ability to manipulate such a fundamental aspect of reality was nothing special. Double didn't know whether to be impressed or infuriated.
Whatever the case, it was better to play the nun for the moment. A foe who could stop time would be a tricky opponent indeed. Wasting it on something like saving a caterpillar, however...
"The differences between worlds is truly impressive," said Double. "To see that a divine power in my world is so... unimpressive in yours. It can be difficult to adapt, sometimes."
She feigned a sigh, dragging her fingers along her cheek. "To be in a world where so many have extraordinary abilities without having any of my own is difficult sometimes." A shrug, and Double's frown vanished, replaced by her favored smile. "Thankfully, nuns seem to be common to most worlds, as is their role of non-violence. Thankfully, I was able to find employment in a church. It's over in Sector oo2, which wasn't my first choice of setting. But beggars cannot be choosers, you know."
Thankfully, in a city of this size, Double found it fairly easy to keep her identity a secret. And people seemed to always lower their guard around a nun, because when were they not trustworthy? Despite the differences between worlds, it was nice to find some things never changed.
Double gave a little laugh. "As nice as it would be to believe that, I think the scientists hold sway over the cycles of nature as well. Were you here for the ice age they implemented? I find it hard to believe they could not arrange the seasons in an order of their choosing if they wanted to. But I am thankful they do not."
Another laugh, and Double tilted her gaze down. Sakuya's clothes were rather familiar to her- the garments of a maid, which were Marie's preferred clothing. "Are you a maid, then? I don't mean to assume, but that is a maid's uniform, is it not? There is a girl in my care who wears similar clothing, though..." She trailed off, not finishing that thought. "Do you do it out of choice or necessity?" she said, picking her head back up.
Pilgrimage [CA Open]
Painwheel shook her head. Dejection made her shoulders fall but in a matter of moments she was bristling again in perpetual unease. The Skull Heart’s aura was sharpening her mind as it had done back in New Meridian…helped her to break through Brain Drain’s control.
Helped her to think now.
This was too suspicious. Attacking was out of the question in case she was wrong but she had no reason to stay if “Filia” didn’t remember her…
Samson’s aggravated snarlings fell onto uncaring ears. If Buer Drive and Gae Bolga could talk they’d have just ignored him anyway as well. She was a right beast and if he could sense it…good. Keep Filia away from her. Safer that way.
"It’s nothing. Never mind." Painwheel turned to go when suddenly…she heard footsteps near her. A glance over her shoulder at Filia’s outstretched hand.
She stared down at it wordlessly. Her neck was cricked nearly all the way around before the rest of her body thought to catch up.
"…! You…but…"
She took her hand slowly; nearly immediately afterward, she tensed up the worst she ever had yet. She still didn’t attack but she was clearly on pins and needles, an edge so sharp she could snap at any moment. Wrong. Something was wrong.
Her mind didn’t want to accept it.
There was hope in her eyes. Painwheel wanted to believe that Filia was really here, even if she didn't remember one of her only real friends. Perhaps there was a moment of selflessness as she tried to walk away, but all the confusion and hope came back full force when Filia reached her hand out. Painwheel just wanted things to be normal, so much so that even a semblance of it was too much for the girl to resist. Her anger made her strong, but as long as it was kept to a minimum, she could be controlled.
Double was working with a time limit. Already, this little heartfelt conversation had wasted about seven minutes of her precious time, and with Painwheel in tow, it would be much more difficult to keep up the act, and to escape. Perhaps she should have fled as soon as Painwheel mentioned the aura of the Skull Heart, but Double's curiosity was too great. Part of her wanted to see just exactly how far she could push this girl.
Filia was able to take Painwheel's hand in her own. Despite the younger girl's outbursts, she was the one to initiate contact. But almost immediately afterwards, Filia felt Painwheel's scabby, veiny hand tense up. There were pins and needles in her palms; it seemed like mere proximity to the dark-haired girl caused Painwheel to suffer. Despite both of their discomfort, Filia did not let go.
"A-are you okay? I-it feels like... something's poking out of you... Like little pins or something. Are you in pain? If it hurts, we don't need to go anywhere." She frowned and turned her body so she could look Painwheel right in the eyes. "Carol, what's wrong?"
Pilgrimage [CA Open]
"O-oh!" Pearl jumped at the sound of another voice, raising her spear and not relaxing until Filia and her… her hair stopped talking. She looked at Filia warily, then at ‘Samson’, as the girl called the hair… monster… thing. Oh dear, there really were strange people in this city. Pearl was just more and more hesitant about this whole excursion by the second. But soon enough, she was pulled out of her thoughts by the realization that Filia had asked her a question and she was just standing there looking stupid. She lowered her spear and cleared her throat.
"Ah… yes, right. It’s fine!" She said with a nervous laugh. "Yes, yes, of course! I was just a little, um, taken aback, there."
Come on Pearl, toughen up. It wasn’t as though she hadn’t seen anything this strange, why was she so jumpy about the strange people here as of late? Pearl figured it was jumpiness left over from the whole kidnapping thing. After all, not everyone could take things in stride as easily as say, Garnet.
The Gem looked at the girl curiously. She didn’t see any sort of visible gem that could be giving her hair magical properties, like those that she and the other Gems collected, but she had to remind herself that if the girl came from another world too, then it was improbable it was Gem magic.
"…How long has your hair been doing that, if you don’t mind me asking?"
Samson growled as the stick was leveled at him. It was definitely a stick, not a spear or any kind of real weapon. However, true to Filia's request, he said nothing more about the ballerina and her stick, settling on an annoyed grunt and a roll of his eyes.
That tended to be most people's reaction to Samson, thought Filia. She gave a sigh, hoping Pearl wouldn't be scared away by her Parasite and his rude behavior. "I can't really blame you," she said, fighting another sigh. "He's not very sociable. I thought things might be a little better in this city because no one knows about Parasites, but I guess a chance of scenery won't change his attitude."
"I'm right here!" he snapped. "I can hear you, ya know!"
Filia shrugged and ignored the Parasite's outburst. She'd already gotten used to his snarky remarks, and found her life went a lot easier if she ignored them. "Well, it's been... I'm not sure. I only remember things a few months back, you see. I just woke up one day, and he was here. I don't remember anything before that."
"'S very tragic," said Samson, nodding. "And before ya get any ideas, I didn't have nothin' ta do with it, Swan Lake." He shot Pearl a nasty glance before continuing. "She was like this when I found her. If anythin', it was really nice 'a me to take pity on her. Usually when I choose a host, I pick someone who can actually fight a bit..."
Filia rolled her eyes and cut in. "Anyways. Do you still want to come with us? I wouldn't really blame you if you didn't..."
