are cykins a brand name or are they the generic name of this specific kind of robot and what makes them special in-universe :]]
Ok so this is pretty long so it's under the cut-
ooh!! I love the synthetis skin question actually...
So in-universe "synthetic skin" has the generic "wire rubber" brands and a name-brand "Synkn". Both are the same thing, just synthetic rubber sheets with tactile sensors running perpendicular to the surface. Generic brands have different weights to determine how spaced out the sensors are, and Synkn uses a special mix of synthetic and natural rubbers- which have allowed them to have more control over both spacing and surface texture... at the cost of being wayy more expensive and harder to maintain.
(sometimes those who use Synkn are referred to as being "sunk", due to the higher cost being overwhelming for designers that are unprepared for long-term maintenance)
So, most cykins have a medium-weight wire rubber for their face, a light-weight wire rubber for hands, and a good number use a heavy-weight wire in other places necessary for their duties (say, having wire-rubber on their knees or soles to check stability). With a higher budget, the skin on the face can reach their collarbones, and the skin on their hands can reach their elbows!
Also, cykin tattoos are technically a thing!! On parts without wire rubber, they can engrave decorations- and there are options to color it via clamping a sheet onto it and pouring colored plastics into the gap to harden like a mold. If a cykin places it correctly, their energy core can make it glow with enough energy too...
yess ok!! so!!! cykin are a kind of robot, characterized by their unique level of command and "status". Cybernetic King- is that it's supposed to stand for. Cybernetic is basic enough, they're just uhh robots, ya know.
"King" means they can command robots ranked Queen and Jack, but fall under Ace, which are somewhat self-defined and usually include their creator/manufacturer, and a select list of Q-A liscense holders.
King also means they carry strict rules in their abilities- the logical equivalents of movement rules in chess. So, a design has to go through approval to have "official" king status, and there are some that are considered queen level because they haven't done so and can't be fully verified.
Q-A - command kin/que/jac (technically), only humans are allowed to be liscensed
CyKin - command que/jac, follows orders from Q-A and usually can't disobey without code manipulation
CyQue - command jac, follows orders from kin/Q-A, however, often they are built with accidental workarounds that let them disobey orders from Q-A.
CyJac - do not command, follows orders from kin/queen/Q-A, but they are often built cheaply and aren't programmed to properly follow Q-A or kin orders. These are commonly used without issue, however, as long as they are under the command of a compliant CyQue.
Also, cykin are also special because they get the unique abilities. There's the loose ideas of an elemental system, but it's fluid enough that honestly it's like robot zodiac signs ngl... (one thing i HAVE to mention about it though is that in it, the sun is associated with lightning. not fire)
