Notice about my health.
In October of last year, I began having concerning symptoms. Recently, Feb 2023, I was diagnosed with probable ALS. I'm trying to remain hopeful, but my condition has been deteriorating rapidly. My mother had the same horrible disease when she was around my age (early 40s) and died nine months after being diagnosed.
I don't want to just disappear without warning, so here I am.
For now, I'm still hanging around fandom spaces and finding much needed solace there. But I no longer have the energy to create fanworks. Again, I hope somehow it's all a misdiagnosis and I get better and can come back to doing what I love full force.
But in case I don't, I just wanted to leave a message for anyone looking for me.
Even if I'm not here to respond physically, I'll still be around in spirit.
It gives me a lot of comfort and satisfaction to know my work will live on after me, whether that's a day soon or in the far future. Much love and gratitude to all the gracious members of all the fandoms I've treasured.
Hi, everyone.
I am a friend of tentacletenshi/slimysuckers. It is March 7, 2023 and I have received the news that she passed away last night. Thank you to everyone who ever read her works or interacted with her in some way. Fandom was always an important part of her life and she valued all of the people she met through it.
I’m paying to force seven thousand strangers to see a photo of my late husband having fun with his dog. Tumblr Blaze is totally worth it. XD
Thank-you to all of my new Internet stranger friends for being so gracious about having my post shoved onto your dashboards. I loved reading all of your kind tags and comments! Both Martin and Bosco have been gone for several years now but for 24 hours, they felt very present in my life. I greatly appreciate this gift. ❤️
Reblog to have your dashboard be visited by the spirit of joy that death can end but not erase.
Companions of Christmas 7: Mari Lwyd!
Mari Lwyd was a gray mare belonging to Taliesin, a poet hailed as “chief of the bards” in sixth century Wales. Taliesin frequently called on Awen, the Welsh muse, for inspiration, and Awen became so captivated by his verses that she determined that he would never again leave her cottage and stay with her forever in the forest glades on the edge of the Glamorgan pastureland.
Mari Lwyd, left tethered outside, was no fan of this plan. She was hungry, and thirsty, and if her rider wasn’t to be released to feed and water her, then the least Awen could do was let her into the cottage so that Taliesin could care for her there.
Mari Lwyd, so long the companion of a great poet, had learned to think as a poet thinks, and so, when she called on Awen to let her in, she did so in rhyme. Awen, not wanting her time with Taliesin interrupted, used rhyme in return to refuse her request, and Mari offered a different argument in favor of an invitation, which was likewise refused. Back and forth they went, neither failing to find the proper words, and their exchange went for so long that eventually Mari Lwyd was nothing but bones.
So engaged by the mare’s clever rhymes was she that Awen hadn’t spared a thought to her captive, but, a longing for him suddenly him popping into her head, she turned to him, and saw that he, too, had long become nothing but bones. Awen found herself at a loss for words, and, unable to offer further excuses to bar Mari Lwyd’s entrance, allowed her into the cottage, where the skeletal mare helped herself to the holiday food and drinks that Awen had prepared for her late paramour.
Now, each Christmas Eve, Mari Lwyd roams the roads and byways of Glamorgan, led by the silent ghost of Taliesin, asking, in rhyme, entry into homes which she suspects contain holiday fare for her to eat. As it was with Awen, she can only be kept out by rebuttal to her invitation in rhyme, but should those who would bar her entrance fail to provide a suitable excuse in verse, she and her entourage face no obstacle in entering and turning the home into their own boisterous feasting hall.
I don’t know if I can contain my “The Muppet Christmas Carol has better costume design than most Oscar-nominated period dramas” rant until after Thanksgiving you guys, I have…so many Thoughts
Ok, buckle up kids.
Basically they did not have to go as hard as they did here. A Christmas Carol covers 60 years of fashion through flashbacks and they still manage to do nearly everything right.
I’m mainly going to be talking about the human actors here because it’s harder to judge Muppet costumes proportionally, but those costumes are still on point 90% of the time.
First off, A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, and anyone who knows me knows I love the absolute train wreck that was mid-19th century men’s fashion. Do you like plaid? GOOD, BECAUSE IT’S ALL PLAID. Mixed with whatever else your little Victorian heart desires, color schemes be damned. Go wild.
This of course means I absolutely love Fred.
This outfit is hideous and it is also 1000% on point.
We also get to see him in a different outfit the next day, along with his wife and some friends.
First off, MORE PLAID, good for you. Second, I can literally find near-identical images of both these ladies’ dresses just by googling “1843 fashion plate”, I shit you not. To the damned year.
A good part of the story involves travelling through Scrooge’s life, so we get to see the costumes varying wildly over the course of several scenes. This was a time when styles were changing rapidly, and you had to keep up if you wanted to be fashionable and keep up appearances. Fashion changed so fast that you can often pinpoint an outfit to within a year or two like the ones above.
First, we go to Scrooge’s childhood school. Given the timeline that’s normally put forward Michael Caine is definitely not old enough to play Scrooge, but ignore that for now. Let’s say if Scrooge is 75ish in 1843, it’s about 1783 when we see him leaving school and going off to be an apprentice. We actually see a few years of Little Scrooge fashion, but it’s fairly standard stuff. Scrooge doesn’t have a super childhood and his clothing is pretty plain, but it’s totally on par for the time. Why this haircut though? It makes me sad.
Then we jump ahead a few years and it’s about 1789. The whole group is attending the Fozziwig Christmas party and have gotten tarted up like they’re about the storm the Bastille, including Gonzo and Rizzo.
Again, they look absolutely ridiculous and it is absolutely accurate.
Now, this is super ostentatious and a lot of people would have considered it way too French for their taste in this time period. But it definitely did happen (I’ve seen stripey bubblegum pink menswear in person) and like. It’s the Muppets. So, Rule of Funny.
Scrooge and Belle are dressed way closer to average Londoners of the time, and it’s worth noting that both are supposed to be somewhat poor. Fozzy pays everyone well but Lil’ Scrooge is still a skinflint and Belle is just getting by. They’re both looking darn good but their clothes are much more understated than everyone else’s and maybe even on the verge of out of style.
Even their hair is pretty good. Including his. Also, holy shit does this guy look like he could be a young Michael Caine. Like, he doesn’t actually look how Michael Caine looked when he was that age, but if I didn’t know that I would totally buy it. Wow.
Then we jump ahead another ten to twelve years or so. This is the period I know the least about, especially when it comes to outerwear, so Jane Austen stans please comment. I don’t think it looks too bad though.
Here’s a couple of fashion plates from 1801 and 1803 for comparison.
I’d also like to point out that there is a wide variety of costumes based on social class that we get to see in the 1843 “present” that you wouldn’t really notice. So while the Scrooge family that’s doing alright for itself is wearing the latest looks, the rest of the town is not. A few of the women in the crowd dancing around Scrooge during “It Feels Like Christmas” are wearing dresses a couple of years out of date. Not too far, but you can see some looks from the tail end of the 1830s before women started shrink-wrapping their sleeves onto their arms.
You can see something similar to these outfits from 1839 in the crowd.
Contrast this with Mrs. Cratchit, who is living in poverty and has put on her absolute best dress for Christmas; it’s silk but it’s ten years out of style.
This would have been the height of fashion in the early-mid 1830s.
And that’s important for making a world look real. Fashion was super important back then, but even so average people weren’t necessarily chucking their clothing out every year to keep up with the latest fashions unless they could really afford to. You would get there eventually, but you don’t want everyone in your universe, rich and poor, to look like they just stepped out of the latest fashion magazine.
It’s absolutely astonishing to me that they put so much effort into this. I don’t tend to go down the rabbit hole of nitpicking historical costumes in movies as much as some, but when a movie that you never expected does it very right it just throws me for a loop.
Was everything perfect? No, I don’t think any movie is. But this is the damn Muppets. They were under no obligation to do this. Add to that the fact that it’s one of the more accurate renditions of the story, to the point of including a ton of the original dialogue, both through the characters and through the narration, and they just created a masterpiece.
Uh-huh sure, next you'll tell me King Charles III is a nepo baby.
This fake yarn is supposedly better for sheep.
Aimed at people who don’t know where wool comes from, it’s 100% plastic. Yes, plastic.
So any garment you wash will release microfibres into the sea. It’ll never decompose.
You’re supposed to believe that sheep shearing is violent and cruel. There are imbeciles out there that work in an unprofessional manner while shearing, but that’s not the case overall.
Sheep don’t suffer from having their fleece removed.
Left on, the fleece can become a home for fly eggs and the subsequent maggots which can eat the sheep. Chemical treatments are available to prevent that happening. It’s much better for the sheep, the land and the farmer to avoid chemical use.
Don’t be fooled. Wool is a sustainable material, one we should make more and better use of.
Any garment you wash will release microfibres into the sea. It’ll never decompose.
This is very important.
And you need to wash acrylic wool garment more often than natural wool. They get stinky way more easily.
In my almost-decade of owning sheep, there have been exactly two(2) bad shearers try to start up in the area. Know what happened? The first farm they went to called every other shepherd in the area and said “This guy cut one of my sheep and didn’t think it was a big deal, don’t hire him.” And neither of them ever did business in the area again.
Some farmers are less conscientious than they should be about taking care of their stock, and the occasional tiny nick will happen, but no one is going to hire a shearer who is a) incompetent enough and b) uncaring enough to actually injure the animals to the point of bleeding, let alone the kind of horrors the internet claims.
Also, most breeds of sheep will literally die if they go too long without being sheared. PETA (and let’s face it, most of this anti-wool stuff can be traced back to deliberate misinformation from PETA) doesn’t care if sheep die, they have openly stated that they would prefer every domestic species that can no longer survive without humans go extinct rather than live in “"slavery.”“
Humans and sheep have lived together for over ten thousand years, they’ve been domesticated longer than dogs! Their lives consist of doing whatever the heck they want (for the most part they only want to walk, eat, sleep, play, and make lambs) while being fed and cared for, for the low price of having their hair cut once a year. Why would anyone boycott this natural, biodegradable fiber humans have been using for so long to the benefit of both species, in favor of plastics that are killing the planet??
Also loving the “the sheep will be snuggly warm tonight” like… You shear sheep in the spring, when the weather warms up and they no longer need it, and they grow it back for next winter.
Also, you literaly NEED to shear sheep multible times a Year or they fucking Overheat and die in their own wool
Twee, deliberate mislabelling which appeals to kind-hearted people who know nothing about how the real thing is produced.
On the funnier side, ignorance about anything closer to nature than a supermarket shelf can result in gems like this one:
Regular yogurt for me. Thanks.
(As for ignorance, this post is epic and getting more so every time I see it.)

Back on topic.
Shearing’s not skinning and it’s not painful, unless some guy getting busy with a manscaping clipper means he’s flaying himself alive.
Shearing is an all-over haircut, call it sheepscaping if need be though expect some odd looks, and good shearers - as @ruusverd said, bad shearers earn a bad rep and soon earn no more money - will leave less nicks on an entire sheep than I might inflict on my face if I forget to change my razor-blade.
That’s pretty impressive when dealing with a notoriously dimwit animal that doesn’t understand “now just sit still for a minute” and finds “see that open gate, go through it” a difficult concept. (Going through an unexpected hole in the hedge, however, is something sheep do with great ease and willingness, especially if there’s a soon-to-be-ex herb garden on the far side…)
“All warm and snuggly in their woolly jumpers…” Oh puh-leeze. A jumper is a garment which can be taken off and put on as required. A sheep’s fleece is nothing of the sort. Ireland’s just had a heatwave, so which of these two would have been more comfortable the other day when it was 30°C / 90°F in the shade?

But look at the blood! goes the outcry about sheep with red stains. Here’s what that “blood” is. Unless the outcriers believe the front half is royal and bleeds blue, it’s just dye.
Why dye? There are various reasons: to show who owns which sheep in a mixed flock of the same breed, or to indicate if one has been dosed with something, or to mark if a ewe has mated with a ram.
The ram wears a harness - AFAIK not black leather with chrome studs, at least not on any farm near here - which holds a dye-pad on his chest. After he’s done his business, the hopefully-preggers ewe will have a patch of that dye on her rump as in the photo.
Different colours let the farmer know which ram’s been busy if there’s more than one, or with one ram, on what day the mating occurred so they can calculate when to expect lambs. That kit suggests rams get one day a week off…
*****
Besides shearing sheep to stop them overheating, if the weather is rainy rather than sunny they’ll still need sheared to stop them getting waterlogged.
A waterlogged sheep is a top-heavy sheep, and since rainy weather will have made the ground slippery, a top-heavy sheep can all too easily become a sheep on its back - a broad, flat back that won’t roll - unable to get upright.
Sheep internal organs aren’t meant to be upside down and inversion will eventually kill them, if they’re not gutted by a fox first. Crows will have had their eyes long before then.
Forget deceitful propaganda about fake wool, here’s some REAL advice about how to do a sheep a (literal) good turn.
I’ve done it myself, and though she’d already lost one eye - hoodie crows don’t miss a chance - that ewe survived and next spring produced what I was told were two fine lambs. I felt pretty good about that.
I still do.
*****
This is what shearing really looks like, and that’s not the behaviour of an animal in distress or pain. Baffled, maybe, but any human whose haircut started with a judo throw would be baffled too..
The end result is a 12lb / 5.5kg load of insulation which the sheep no longer has to carry about. How’d you like being stuck inside that lot on a hot day?
The “shearing is cruel” fruitloops rely on deliberate lies, gullibility and lack of knowledge. Be aware.
Or maybe…

Posted this privately a few days ago, but nothing has really changed.
I'm still of a mood to burn the world down. How many amazing voices were driven out of pretty much every fucking storytelling medium by toxic shit? How many books in Lucien's library, all because the people in power couldn't bear the idea of the Eddie Berganzas, Charles Brownstiens, Les Moonves, and Harvey Weinsteins of the world actually being held accountable for their behaviour? How fucked up is it that it takes Trump getting elected to make complacent white people so angry that they start rooting out corruption in their own communities to feel some sort of control over how awful their own little microcosims are, after decades of women and BIPOC and LGBT+ and Disabled and frankly every vulnerable member of society telling them over and over again they were made to feel small and objects and unsafe and afraid? NOW the work is getting down. But I'm still full of rage.
I just want to scream all the time.
I love the guy who’s clearly a teacher who came over with the intent to tear two fucking idiot teenagers apart from each other only to find these fucking nerds it probably made his entire month
