I'm never not projecting Appalachia lore onto Zaun. Yes it is Philadelphia but it is also Appalachia to me. Hear me out: (I'm mostly looking at West Virginia for the sake of the comparison bc that's the one I'm most familiar with)

1. Zaun is a mining economy, just like several Appalachian states including WV. And, like WV, Zaun is subject to extreme economic exploitation, disenfranchisement, and poverty, leading to a severe distrust of the government and authority.

2. The aforementioned poverty and distrust of authority led to the rise of prolific drug smuggling and moonshine production, and that economic factors have contributed to an ongoing opioid crisis. We know Zaun is involved in a lot of smuggling operations (that Silco and Vander participated in), and has a massive drug crisis.

3. I can't write an entire essay on the history of the Coal Wars here though I would like to, but it's essential to know that there was a widespread effort to unite all of the workers of coalfields across WV (as well as in other states across the region) into a union to challenge the horrific, oppressive conditions that the coal companies forced upon them. Those companies used the agents of the government-- the police, to arrest, target, brutalize, and murder the organizers and their sympathizers. Does that sound familiar? (If you enjoy the exploration of class conflict in Arcane, I highly suggest you research the Coal Wars on your own especially if you are USAmerican. We owe so much of the labor protections we have now to the coal miners of Appalachia)

4- West Virginia currently sits just across the Shenandoah river from the wealthiest county (by average income) in the United States-- Loudoun County, VA. Yeah. Across the river. Like. Come on guys.

So yeah I project so much Appalachian shit when I think about Zaun. They 100% run moonshine down there. Even the names of some minor characters sound similar to old Appalachian names. I just. AGH. I love them so much. It still 100% gives Philadelphia, but like,, if you put it in WV. I love it more than anything 🩷
