It made sense the way Shadow explained it, but Avery couldn’t help but still be apprehensive. Shadow assured her that it wasn’t common, but just because it was rare, that didn’t mean it didn’t happen. She didn’t want to be taken away from her family. “I’ve only talked to her once and it was awkward. I mostly just see her in my familiar form,” she admitted. “I don’t even know what I’d say to her. She’s confided in me without knowing I’ve been listening to every word. What if she hates me for being dishonest about that?”
“well, as a witch, she should first and foremost understand that familiars don’t just walk up and say ‘hey, i’m your familiar and you’re my witch’. you have to be sure you belong to each other. with as strong as your pull to her is, it’s safe to say she’s your witch - whether she responds well to that or not is up in the air. unfortunately, we don’t get to pick our witches or our familiars, so that’s definitely something you both would have to work out if it goes down the wrong road. but it could end up going really well, so i would let her know as gently as possible. the longer you wait, the longer you go without your bond and your bond is important.”

“Ideas for what?” he asked, not sure if she meant ideas when it came to the show or something else. He grabbed another little pint of the chocolate chunk and then one of the flavor he knew Abby liked and also one for Lucas before letting the freezer door shut.
“to freak the husband out. i have to make his life a little frustrating as payback for constantly renovating the house and letting me find out the hard way. i’m tired of falling into holes that weren’t there the day before,” shadow said with a small laugh.

Avery nodded. “I felt a pull toward this one witch in the city … I don’t know if it’s her magic reaching out to mine or mine reaching out to hers, but she seems … lost. Lonely. But I’m afraid of telling her that I’m drawn to her because I don’t want the same experience my ex had.” She hesitated. “I don’t know if she’d do that to me, but I also don’t know if she wouldn’t.” Having a soulmate sounded nice, though.
“well, she’s a witch, so she knows how familiars work - hopefully. and you can’t have more than one familiar per witch, so if you’re getting that strong of a pull towards her, then she likely doesn’t have a bond with another. i’m sure if you explained the situation she might understand and you guys can work on it together and form that bond,” shadow said. “what happened to your ex was a horrifying, disgusting example of how bad some witches can be. that doesn’t happen very often. i suppose it’s hard to think about the positive when something so terrible was experienced, though.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever met a telepathic witch before. I always just thought that was a psychic thing. That sounds pretty annoying, though.” he chuckled a little, taking another drink, “I always wonder what came first the witch or the familiar. Probably not the most important thing to know, cause that doesn’t actually matter, but it’s interesting to think about.”
“well, psychics and witches are very similar. psychics have heightened senses - but no magical abilities. it’s all senses for them, but it’s still pretty powerful. witches have the magical aspect - and then there are the psychic witches, who have the abilities of both. i can technically be considered a psychic witch because i have the abilities psychics have, but i don’t call myself one,” shadow explained. she took a sip of her drink, brows furrowing as she thought about his statement. “...that’s a good question, though. which of us did come first? when you think about it, you try to use common sense, but it’s not really that easy. it’s like the chicken or the egg debate. sure, chickens come from eggs. but eggs can’t happen without chickens to lay on them and help them develop. but with witches and familiars it’s different. technically we both can go our entire lives without each other, but we work better together. the question is, which of us is the reason the other happens? is it witches because familiars need a bond or is it familiars because you’re like our magical soulmates and we’re better balanced with you? maybe we’ll never know the true answer, but it’s interesting to think about.”

“Ah the mysterious power of twins. There were twins in my class when I was a kid. They always seemed to know what the other was about to say. “That’s what my halmeoni always says.”
“the twin thing is definitely powerful. especially with witches. we have literal twin telepathy. sometimes she gets in my head when i’m trying to sleep and the worst part is, i’ve never known how to turn it off so i’m stuck listening to her ramble. sometimes i don’t think she even realizes she’s doing it,” she said with a small laugh. “we’re both important for each others’ balance. without balance, witches and familiars wouldn’t be able to reach their true potential or strongest points.”

“the big ones when they’re just being marshmallows aren’t that great, I can agree” he nodded “but the mini ones are pretty good. You can just pop ‘em in your mouth. You should watch it. They’re all different, so it’s not like one of those shows you have to watch every episode of to know what’s going on.”
“raw marshmallows are nasty. both sizes taste the same, they’re an evil invention,” shadow said with a scrunched nose. “well then let’s get this show on the road, maybe i’ll get some ideas.”
mytarnishedsilver:
Avery frowned faintly. “My ex … his witch took him away, worked him to the bone. I never saw him until he showed up here a few months ago. I honestly didn’t know if he was alive or dead. I couldn’t imagine that was a normal thing for witches to do to their familiars, but I have no frame of reference … my witch doesn’t know I exist yet.”
“that’s terrible. no good natured or good hearted witch would do that. familiars balance us out - we balance each other out. we’re important for each others’ well being and survival. familiars are for helping us and us helping them - it’s never a one-way street. we respect each other and love each other. witches and familiars are like... soulmates, kind of,” shadow said. “oh? do you know who your witch is?”

“you could have always told him you were just going as moral support for your sister. I’m not married, though, so take my hypothetical suggestions with a grain of salt.” He took another sip, “I am. We’ve only been together since the fall, so not very long compared to many others.”
“to be honest, i wouldn’t have even come if i knew what this was. my sister has her ways of convincing me to do things. manipulation at its finest - it’s also a twin thing,” she said. “not long, but you’re important for each others’ balance.”

“Wait, so you don’t like marshmallows at all? Not even s’mores?” Colton couldn’t think of anyone that didn’t like s’mores. “I don’t think so. It’s a good show, if it was a bad one I think it’d be insulting.”
“if the marshmallow is completely melted then it’s fine. marshmallow fluff is okay. and the little marshmallows in cereal is fine, but just regular marshmallows is gross. it’s a texture thing,” she said. “i’ll have to take your word for it cause i don’t know anything about it.”

“I would if I knew more people with kids” Ezra gave a little shrug. “There’s lots of people out there with kids that do things that could get them killed. Maybe they need a reminder not to go dying on their kids. It’s not something I’m trying to have a conversation about, so can’t be a shitty conversation starter.”
“yeah, lots of people, but most of us don’t. you can’t just go around assuming every parent is doing something that would get us killed and leave our kids parentless,” shadow said with furrowed brows. “but you said it - and it started a new conversation. you literally told me not to die on my kid, if you didn’t wanna talk about it, you wouldn’t have said it.”

He was in the middle of a sip of his margarita when she asked what had brought him there. Moon-soo took a moment to pull the glass down from his lips and swallow, before proceeding with his answer. “Thought it would be a way to meet new people. Also here as moral support for my witch.” he made a gesture with the hand holding the glass to where Sam was.
“it’s definitely a way to meet people,” she said. “i came with my sister. i had no idea what she was dragging me into - and now i understand why she told my husband that it was a secret, cause he absolutely would not have liked me coming if he knew what this was,” shadow said with a small laugh. “you said ‘your’ witch. you must be a familiar?”

“Chocolate chunk it is” he tips the pint forward a little in a quick little move. “I have disagree on the marshmallows thing, though” he added as he opened the freezer up to put the other pint back. “It’s a show from the 50s or maybe 60s. You know, doo da doo da doo da doo da” he did his best to mimic the infamous sound from the opening credits of the show.
“you can disagree - but you’re wrong,” she joked. “marshmallows are gross already, i don’t want it in my ice cream,” shadow said. “is that what that’s from? my husband does that every time i say something he thinks is weird. should i be insulted?”

“you could always ask if something like that is set up. Though I don’t know if this is the kind of place to have its own taxi service.” Moon-soo nodded as she told him the kind of drink she wanted “A sangria it is then” he nodded and went to go grab their drinks. Returning shortly with a sangria in one hand and margarita in the other. “your sangria” he held the drink out to her.
“probably not. i don’t see too many people getting too wild at something like this - but i guess there’s always the exception,” she said. shadow gave him a small smile as she took the drink from him. “merci,” she said. “what borught you here? did you come on your own or are you an innocent attendee that was just kinda... thrust into it?”
orchestralcollage:
“I’d say most babies don’t understand the concept of death, so how was I supposed to know she would?” He questioned. “Because bad things can happen to a kid when that happens, and that wouldn’t be fair to her”
“maybe use your common sense and don’t suggest to people that they don’t die,” shadow said. “do you go around telling people not to die on their kids? cause if you do, it’s a shitty conversation starter.”
orchestralcollage:
“Rocky road or chocolate chunk?” Colton asked as he took the two pints out of the freezer at the back of Magnolia’s and turned to show the options to Shadow. “It’s for a night of marathoning The Twilight Zone if that helps any.”
@shadowdubois
“chocolate chunk, cause marshmallows don’t belong in ice cream,” shadow said. “twilight zone, huh? is that the one with the big green glowing stuff coming out of the ground? or... is that tommyknockers? i never can keep those sci-fi things in order.”
mytarnishedsilver:
“Oh. I guess that makes sense. That different families would be different,” Avery said, feeling a bit foolish. “Like I said, I don’t really know much about witch magic.” She shook her head. “Is … is it common for witches to take their familiars and travel with them? Like, just up and take them from their families and work them until they’re drained?”
“there’s a generalized age for most witchlings in training, kind of like puberty - usually starts around the beginning of teenhood, but some start years before that. witchlings start usually after toddlerhood, but some start earlier, and some are even born with their powers - before that even, sometimes upon conception,” she said. shadow’s brows raised and she shook her head. “no. we don’t take our familiars from their families. familiars are like our guardians. we have them as long as we need them, but we never just uproot them and take them with us. even from far away, our familiars can keep us safe by communication. our jobs as witches and familiars coincide with each other - we keep each other safe and don’t do anything to potentially cause harm. the only time a familiar would travel with their charges is if they needed to and if it was safe for them.”
