The story behind this painting is very interesting, though.  The artist’s mother was very sick, so the house was always filled a suffocating silence.  This painting depicts him wanting to scream, but having to be silent, hence the anguished expression.  In the whole painting you see figures in the background, one of which is his sister.

^^actually that’s not the full story behind this painting. the inspiration from this painting came from an actual location. edvard munch (the artist) was walking along a path with two friends. he stopped at a fjord because he felt tired and ill. as he looked over the fjord he saw the blood red sunset and according to his diary he “sensed a scream through nature.” this is the location that all of this happened. his mother actually died of tuberculosis 25 years before munch painted this.
