No joke, this speaks directly to my soul.
pretty sure i can't say it better than mojo did- "'gravity' holds, 'captain' floats, and 'machete' bombs". i personally expected captain phillips to take the top of the box office this weekend. not because gravity isn't a spectacle of cinematic design. but rather because... well.. there isn't much to the story. but i'm going to leave that debate up to the critics. for now, i'm going to stick to the stats and reports from this weekend.
from my vantage point it seems gravity's success this weekend can be contributed to one simple fact- the idea of this revolutionary experience that one can only fully attain if they are in the theater watching the movie. from all the reviews and conversations i have over heard this last week, it is clear that audience are telling their friends, 'see it in 3d/imax!'. and while, yes, i do have a growing disdain for the use of cheap cinematic thrills such as 3d, i am willing to admit that this films use of the technology might just be the best use ever.
so naturally audiences are flocking to theaters in droves- with a cast like gravity, with the design and flash the movie holds, and the marketing the film has had, everyone wants to see it on the biggest screen possible. in fact the film's 3d shares accounted for 82% of this weekends' growth- which is 2% higher than last weekend even! and the film's imax shares are doing incredibly well as well- the film just set the record for highest second weekend ever for the format bringing in $9 million- which according to mojo topped the dark knight rises $8.99 million, but whose really counting?
so yes, this movie is an experience and a half, and maybe we finally have found the perfect way to allow 3d to enhance the feeling a film has, but if there's still little to the story, will it keep audiences coming back? mojo is predicting the film will hold strong in the box office until early november when films such as ender's game and thor: the dark world hit imax theaters, forcing this movie to hit the shelves. and there in lies my point- if the film can't be enjoyed with the similar if not new level of entertainment a few months down the road in the privacy of my own home, am i really going to spend the money to buy the movie? no. if the film makes $300 million before leaving theaters then warner brothers will have done well for themselves, but i'll be interested to see how the dvd and blu-ray sales do.
now, before i go any further, i just want it to be understood i am NOT a a huge fan of captain phillips. i think it's a descent movie worth seeing, but the major thing i think the movie has going for it is that, you guessed it, it has a story! no doubt the film won't come close to attaining the level of success gravity will by the end of it's exhibition run in theaters, but i am still going to sit here in my film pretension and argue its as good if not better than gravity simply because it has a story. may not be a great one but it has one. and i don't even like tom hanks really. at all!
and as far as machete kills 'bombing' at the theater, all i'm going to say is, "i appreciate when the predictable happens."
overall the top 12 brought in $108.2 million, which is 10 precent off from last year's numbers, but still not bad when you consider the last several years. one think is for certain tho- academy season is upon us and i couldn't be more excited! my wallet is about to get a lot lighter over the next few weeks.

and it was a good weekend for the horror film industry taking the box office by storm with insidious chapter 2! the suspense thriller sequel took the '#1 movie in the country' title this weekend with an impressive $41 million it's opening weekend, bringing in 8 times what it took to make. it's no secret that thrillers tend to bring in quite a bit of profit for the studios that stand behind them, but this is definitely big for the franchise.
was it as successful as the first? in some ways the numbers say yes, in others, not so much. the first insidious nearly made 10 times what their budget was in their opening weekend, however that total only came to slightly over $13 million. so percentage-wise chapter 2 may not have done as well but 8 times more isn't bad, and $41 million is nothing to sneer at. i guarantee you the folks at film district aren't.
other than that it wasn't an overly amazing week. the family flick to hit theaters, "The Family", did pretty okay for itself, almost making it to that 50% mile marker. but still, with the reviews coming out the way that they are, it's hard to say if it'll be able to hold on to a spot in the top 10 come next week.
overall it was a better weekend at the box office than in the last few years, bringing in a whooping 100 million for studios and theaters. so the trend is holding out; it looks like the exhibition market is showing positive signs, slight however few, but still they are there. at this point i'm just waiting till november when we get some real stories that go head to head in the box office- academy season come quickly!

today is sept. 10th. meaning #startrekintodarkness is out on blu-ray. excuse me while i go spend money i don't have on a scifi addiction.
ahhh... all seems to be right with the world again. the main action movie opening this weekend takes the box office, with some family friendly, and other adult comedies following closely behind. and yes, oh yes, the the british boy band doco slipped to 6 overall. but let's be honest, that's actually pretty good for a second weekend run.
so what's the real story? well out of the seven or so films opening this weekend, only one of them cracked the top twenty. now yes, it took first, but for studios like imagine entertainment or high top releasing, it kinda was a sucky weekend- other than for weinstein company who's "lee daniel's the butler" helped them stay in the top ten this week.
i do have to give credit to universal, who most certainly played their cards right, releasing riddick this weekend, seeing as it probably wouldn't have held up to well releasing on weekends with similar sci fi block busters such as star trek, man of steel, or even pacific rim. and even though the movie was a little less than $350k shy of making back 50% of its budget in its opening weekend, bringing in nearly half of $38 mill, on a weekend such as this, is nothing to sneer at.

was it a disappointing weekend for studio executives? to a certain extent, yeah, kinda. but in most regards, while this wasnât a killer weekend for any of the big six, this was a better weekend at the box office than would have been expected.
obviously there are the basics that you can get from this weekendâs report. elysium took the top spot this, itâs opening weekend, which was mildly expected as it is very much in the vein of summer blocker busters (and it was the only kind to fit that mold opening this weekend). planes and pierce jackson also ranked in the top four, being the only âfamily friendlyâ movies to open. again, nothing majorly surprising there.
but letâs just talk about how most of the titles opening this weekend werenât able to make back 50% of their budget, other than âweâre the millersâ- who honestly did have a kick butt opening weekend all things aside. elysium barely made back 30%, and statistically speaking it should have done the best! if i were the exe at tristar i think iâd be having a little sit down chat with my marketing and pmd people. planes came close, but still didnât make it, more than likely due to the fact that its audience was split between it and the new addition to the (struggling) pierce jackson franchise.
now, yes, i agree it wasnât a major success for any of the studios other than warner brothers, really, but we canât just base the read out on this report. yes, it wasnât an overly impressive week, but the box office did bring in more this weekend than it did last weekend. statistically speaking this weekend did even better than the same weekends have done in the past several years. itâs nothing major, but it is a slight silver lining to this weekendâs report.
i still just want to take a moment to focus on blue jasmine (yes, again)! this was its third weekend and it again climbed up the ranks. last week it went from just outside the ranking limits to spot 14, and now itâs to 11 this weekend. and yes, while its average per theatre has dropped from an impressive 100k per theatre from its opening weekend over the last two, its still pulling in more per theatre than almost any other film. and it still hasnât opened nationwide yet! iâm telling you, thereâs got to be something to this movie. i plan to go see it as soon as i get a chance and i really hope it is worth it. even if its not a fav of mine, clearly the sony picture company is doing something right with this one. itâs still early, but iâm going to continue to keep my eye on this one.
