Being in the work environment was different. He never saw it as much of a requirement, since he used to be busy with school or… well, fighting in a war. Not that that thought mattered right now. They were currently stuck in Koi, what was the reason again—he couldn’t recall. But it did give them a break. He wasn’t sure how long they would be in Koi, so might as well pick up a job. How else would they afford the apartment that was kindly offered to them?
He didn’t expect that he’d get a barista job of all things. He only took the opportunity because it was a job that needed employees… and it was the first one he found on his leisurely stroll. Really, he expected it to be just the book job, but they were short on baristas. And surprisingly, he was good at making coffee.
He would be done with his shift soon, in just about—thirty minutes? Time flew by faster than he thought while he worked. Sure there were days when there was a ton of downtime, but he occupied himself by putting books back and organizing them. Today was one of those days. It was relaxing.
And surprisingly, a customer walked in. They looked familiar. He didn’t get a good look at them quite yet, since he was busy putting another book away.
❛ Hello, I’ll be right over to take your order, ❜ he started off, using his usual customer service voice. It was hard to keep the tone, but after a week or so of working here he got used to it. When he turned to head to the register, he looked dumbfounded.
❛ …Lance? You? Drink coffee? ❜ it was just an assumption because of how sudden it was, but Keith couldn’t help it. He was surprised. There was no way he was getting out of this now, it was obvious he was working here. He was in an apron and all, and his hair was tied back.

To Keith, Koi was surprisingly warm. It didn’t matter the season or the time of day. He could feel the warm brisk air hit against his face. Even on the beach, despite the hint of wind here and there, it was just right. Coming to the beach at night was a good idea. It got him out of the house and outside—he had the entire beach to himself.
Well, not quite.
Somehow, one of his close friends followed him out here. He thought she would be asleep like Lance was. Who was up past midnight? Oh right, him. Though, she did have a bad habit of looking up her weird mathematics. He never did ask her what she was discovering this time. They were on Koi, so perhaps it had to do with the strange phenomenon of this place they currently rested.
And he had to admit, using Koi as a place to relax was better than home. So far it was, anyway. There were strange life forces on this island that Keith wasn’t used to, but he hasn’t interacted with anyone peculiar yet. Not that it would matter, since he was pretty peculiar himself.
Another soft breeze went by and it got him out of his thoughts. He didn’t bother to sweep the bangs that went in weird directions. He remembered that Pidge was close beside him this entire time. Maybe he really should converse with her. It might help her get sleepy.
❛ Hey Pidge, ❜ he turned to look at her, ❛ Do you know how to skip rocks? ❜ what kinda start of a conversation was that? Whatever, Keith.
There were plenty of hobbies that Keith enjoyed doing on his own, but fishing? He wasn’t sure if fishing was one of them. He did have the time and patience for it, he supposed, but now it sounded like he was dragged into some sorta competition. The fisherman was practically boasting, and he had to be honest, could he really beat this guy? He had no clue.
Better worth the try.
The guy was nice enough to point out where he could get a rod of his own. There was a small shop not too far away, so he decided to rent a fishing rod. No reason to buy one officially if he was never going to use it again, unless his roommates really wanted it. But they didn’t need to know about this.
...He was just happy to get a fish out of it.
Now that he was prepared, Keith watched how the fisherman casted his rod. Once he figured out the motion, he casted his own, and watched the bobber. This was definitely going to be a long ten minutes. When he looked back over, he saw the man cast again. What was he even doing? ❛ Didn’t you just swing that? ❜ Keith asked, curious.
❛ Have you never heard of fly fishing? They get quite the catch! Wahaha! Oh look, a bite! ❜ he fought with the fish and pulled it closer—he successfully caught his fish. The fish was a decent size, probably not the biggest one there is out there. He wasn’t sure how good fly fishing was, or what kind of rod he even grabbed. He just asked for one of the best rods the shop had.
❛ That’s cheating! ❜ he was stuck sitting here doing nothing but waiting on the fish to bite. Five minutes had already passed, and Keith caught nothing.
❛ Fishermen’s knowledge, kid. ❜ The fisherman swung his rod again and repeated the process. This time he wasn’t catching anything. Time was definitely flying fast as that rod. How annoying. Keith looked back at his rod. Was he even able to catch a fish in ten minutes? It was only ten minutes, and that was the main reason why he chose to participate in this task in the first place. Otherwise, it was a waste of time, especially if he didn’t get a bite.
But wait—
There was a tug on his line. He saw his bobber dip down. It was time to reel in the fish, and hell, it was harder to do than he thought. He fought hard with the fish, were fish always this heavy? Or was he just weak? He had no clue, but finally after a minute, it came closer. He was able to reel it in all the way, just like that! The battle between him and the fish was over before he knew it. He lifted up the fish, and the two compared them. Somehow, Keith was capable of beating the old man.
❛ Why I’ll be, you got quite the catch! Good job, boy! ❜ he got a slap on the back from the old man. It was time to go home with the fish he just caught.
Guess they’re having fish for dinner tonight… hopefully his roommates knew how to cook it.
