Thereβs something new in Damienβs tone. A slight change, a slight shift. Not a shattering of the calm conversation, but a gentle steering in a different direction.
And yet, it feels like the lanes are shifting too quickly, to Mark. Heβs not saying that- he canβt be saying that- No. No, Damien doesnβt feel β¦ those sort of things for Mark. Surely he is seeking support? Surely he is confiding in a friend about his love? Even that would be a surprise.
He keeps his mouth firmly shut, leaving the spotlight to Damien to say his piece. Is he feeling stage fright? Because Mark is.
βYouβre in love? Dames, Iβm happy for you! You should go for it. Life is for the living,β he says, to accompany Damienβs own words. Heβs smiling, even while his heart feels like itβs tearing. From loss? Or hope? βI will be honest, from what Iβd heard, I was under the impression you werenβt looking for a relationship.β
Whoβs the lucky person? He can play wingman. He can help see it through. After all, Damienβs an old friend. But the way heβs looking at him now makes Markβs mouth go dry. βWait, areβ¦ you saying thatβ¦ ?β
The moment is tender, anticipatory β but just as much as it is filled with worry, anxiety. Has he said something wrong ? Has he bore his heart too quickly ?
Damien opens his mouth, a response on his tongue β of course Iβm in love, Iβve been in love for years, canβt you see ? β but then Markβs next words quickly divert his attention. His brows furrow.
β Wherever did you get that impression ? β
Itβs just enough to distract Damien from Markβs almost-question that followed. Mark says it so nervously that Damien barely hears him, anyway.
Werenβt looking ? He doesnβt care for people throwing themselves at him, if thatβs what Mark is referring to. Every relationship was superficial ; worse were the ones his parents had tried to choose and push. Is that what Mark is referring to ?
