Nigel as Grace complete with the dorky dachshund and nerdy t-shirts that cling to every muscle of his body with glasses falling off his face. He’s smart, but he doesn’t fully believe he is. He initially doesn’t want to die for humanity when they failed him, but sacrificing his chance at returning home for Adam is easy.

Adam as Rocky who is immediately a little bit clingy and codependent with Nigel. He immediately says “I hate Charlie” when Nigel tells him how he is alone. He tries at humor and misuses turns of phrase. He is smaller than Nigel and still drags him to get medical treatment even though it kills him.

They learn to communicate and adapt to one another. They save each other’s lives. They are both lonely and fear being left alone. They can only touch through a barrier. It’s only them.

My theory for why Nigel dresses down so much is that newbies in the criminal underworld have watched too much Godfather and tend to go overboard with the suits. He dresses like a bargain bin because he doesn’t need to look intimidating - he is intimidating.

It’s similar to his relentless cursing despite being well read and eloquent with a sophisticated appreciation for art.

He feels no shame openly weeping in the men’s bathroom in front of the guy his wife is leaving him for.

He’s so confident in his own skin that he doesn’t give a shit about the puffed up symbols of power anyone else in his position would cling to.

He’s gonna wear what’s comfortable, say what he thinks, feel what he feels, and everyone else can go fuck themselves.

And THAT is why he’s perfect for Adam.
