I hate cigarettes so much I hate that smoking is becoming cool again I hate that we're becoming contrarian hipsters about this disgusting habit that has literally killed so many people and destroyed so many lives I'm so serious we need to become absolute killjoys about this again it's time to go 90s scolds on cigarettes until the scourge is wiped out entirely.
Genuinely I just don't think people younger than 35 know how good they have it. I distinctly remember the year in my childhood that it became illegal to smoke in restaurants, I remember what it was like when people used to smoke indoors everywhere, you all think it's cool because it's this illicit fun thing people are doing drunk outside bars now, you don't remember what it was like when fucking everything reeked all the time and you couldn't get away from it and how life changing it was when you could suddenly go out to eat and everything didn't taste like ash and all your clothes and hair didn't stink for days when you got home.

I lived and worked in a lighthouse at a previous job. There was a thick line painted in a circle around the shack where the fog signal was kept. The line represented how close you could get to the fog signal without experiencing physical harm in the form of eardrums shattering or worse.
Even in the house it was LOUD. Probably the loudest thing I have ever experienced but at a normal, predictable interval. You would begin to time your sentences with little pauses with the rest of the lighthouse crew so you would talk like this while making yourâŚâŚâŚ..HORNâŚâŚâŚâŚ. tea and then carry on talking because you knew when it would go off. It rattled the walls and the dishes in our cabinet.
At least one girl had died there. They kept photos of her everywhere âin honor of her sacrificeâ because she had decided to take the winter watch alone and died in a storm where bounders the size of mini vans had been lifted out of the ocean and left scattered across the island, to say nothing of the ice chunks. People werenât allowed to be alone on the watch after that.
One day a dead moose washed up on shore and it took my entire crew all day but we managed to rig up a line to hang it up to dry because we thought having a moose skeleton in the house would really spice the living room up a bit. It did. Weird shit happens when six of you are left alone, like ALONE ALONE, no cell reception, no wifi, just a radio to contact the real world and not a lot of reason to do that. People donât go on lighthouse jobs if they want to stay connected, Iâve found.
That said Id do it all again, I really do treasure those days
you know you couldâve just said âno they donât have wifiâ and that wouldâve answered the question
But then you wouldnt have known about the moose
Just a silly crossover that wouldn't leave my mind

A frustrating part of the mainstream vegan âlove all animals and protect the environmentâ mindset is the fact that things need to die in real-life ecology all the time but deer hunting season makes icky feelings and carp culls arenât cottagecore
The vegan âany animal death ever is morally wrongâ mindset doesnât hold up when:
We donât have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, theyâll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.
Itâs kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.
An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where theyâre an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.
I donât know how to end this except. Sometimes things just gotta die and acting otherwise just isnât a realistic expectation.
Highlights from the notes over the past 6 months include a lot of angry vegans saying âyouâre blowing things out of proportion, no vegans actually think like this!â and a lot of people who work in conservation and education saying âEvery day. I have to fight people who think like this.â
As a bonus this post was originally inspired by the vegan who called me racist for saying we should kill invasive species
we romanticize demonic possession here, sir
and perhaps possibly sexualize. At times
You can tell a lot about a person by entering their mind palace and encountering their greatest fears and darkest hopes in a labyrinth reflective of their subconscious thoughts.
Jarvis, pull up that variable meme.
iâm reminded of the developer of a mapping software who had a variable named âlegend_handlesâ that got refactored into âleg_handles,â âleg_hands,â and finally âfeetâ
