shanceitup:
Why is it always the shance artists folks getting criticized?
Y'all are so gong-ho in saying shit about the way shance is drawn/written while silently ignoring the same stereotyping used by sh//eith shippers, or at least vauge about it instead of full-on making a post about it like shance which seems to be the target of all sorts of shit by everyone, even the people who supposedly loves it.
[ORIGINAL TRUNCATED see this link for full]
while i agree with the general sentiment of this post, i canât agree with your wording
1. there have been two (2!!) posts on the subject in the five or so months iâve been tracking the tag. one was worded mildly, and the other was insultingly worded but contained very useful references for those who did wish to change their style. the first did not gain much traction at all. i could hardly call that âalwaysâ.
both sheith and klance have much larger and much more volatile fanbases, and three (3!! yours included) posts about the tropes and tendencies of the shippers is hardly comparable.
2. for all these sentiments, i canât agree with you that the shance shippers as a whole can be blamed. there are still beautiful artworks getting hundreds (if not thousands!) of well-deserved notes despite the dissent. who is liking and reblogging that content if not for the people who ship shance?
3. i do agree that criticizing an artist for their style is in bad taste, as a content creator, i can tell you that vagueposts like are actually far more effective in motivating me to examine the things i create than direct, pointed criticism of things that are ultimately my choice.
they force me to think about what iâm creating, whether or not i agree with their vision and why or why not. this kind of introspection has triggered some of my most widely loved worksâboth ones where i set out to prove that theyâre wrong, and ones where i set out to test if they were right.
the crit itself is sometimes painful or irritating to see, but iâm grateful for it.
4. âLooks like the shance community canât appreciate anything anymore without bitching, almost like all this support/content thatâs being produced is making folks more entitled.â this was straight-up uncalled for. i havenât met such a lovely bunch of shippers and creators in a very, very long timeâif ever.
youâre making volcanoes out of molehills, and this post was rather disappointing to see when i refreshed the tag this morning.
I should have clarified that the post talking about the âissuesâ had mountains of support (likes and reblogs) , basically demanding shance artists to stop drawing Lance like a ânoodleâ and having it show up on the top shance tag for a while. (and literally got harassed for trying to make my statements against it :////)
1. I think the post your talking about actually has a VERY toxic mindset, Idk if you really read their replies or my take on it, but what theyâre basically saying is drawing shance with the height difference isâŠwell IMPLIES pedophilia, and that artists need to make changes because think of the CHILDREN wHOâLL ASSUME THIS IS OBV AN UNDERAGE BOY WITH A GROWN MAN. The âusefulâ info does really nothing if the message behind it is âdonât draw it like this because youâre doing it wrongâ Â
2. I donât blame all the shance shippers, that was bad wording on the last part like you said, I mostly talked with anger with that, but itâs the amount of people who agree with the sentiment who are shance shippers. I was disappointed and angry with, you donât really seem to forget the wholeÂ
âBtw how can you still support it by reblogging it and saying you âlove these artistsâ while simultaneously shitting on how the draw/portray Lance. Like itâs okay to dislike something, but itâs so fucking stupid to make a vague post about something that ISNâT EVEN THAT FREQUENT. âÂ
I see this as hypocritical, people who go around and show support while also âtalking shitâ. Itâs not like a movie, or individual work with a review button. Itâs a bunch of people supporting this sentiment thatâs very toxic since youâre basically dictating what people can and canât draw.Â
3. Criticism is GREAT, but thereâs a difference between getting a well-informed critic and having someone again have to say YOU ARE DRAWING THIS WRONG, STOP DOING IT. And well thereâs a difference between asking for it and someone dropping a random rant about it.Â
You say youâre grateful for it, but not everyone is like you, not everyone is gonna look at the posts talking shit and think man I could be wrong, because what these posters fail to understand is that the ship, the characters and the community isnât theirs. That just because someone made a couple fanart or fics with them being major occ or a little occ doesnât mean itâs automatically bad and that people NEED to learn from them. People drawing for fun vs people drawing exactly to canon isnât the answer.Â
4. I made another post talking about this, but in short the shance community was great, and thereâs still plenty of people in that community who make really great content, but too look at the whole community and say theyâre all lovely people isnât true, I seen shance shippers policing others works, I seen certain shippers acting petty, and disgusting, it was wrong of me to say â shance community canât appreciate anything anymore without bitching â it was said out of anger and I recognized that now, but Iâm not gonna go around and say the shance community as a whole is wonderful to be around, not after seeing that post get a lot of support, and certainly not after the fiasco with the OP.Â
I donât see this as âmaking volcanoes out of molehills,â while I appreciate your reply, it I donât see it as âescalating an issueâ.Â
Also I stated that if people really wanted to make the content âcloser to canonâ they should be able to do it themselves, if you want Lance the way you want him, or the relationship with shance, then they should be able to produce it themselves.Â
gate keeping a community, and silently (or vocally) supporting this notion of drawing/writing the ârightâ way doesnât help everyone âlearnâ or improve themselves.Â
