Sarah Siddons, who died #onthisday in 1831, was one of the greatest actors of her day. Here she is depicted in her most iconic role as Lady Macbeth. In 1785, Siddons caused a great commotion - instead of holding the candle throughout the sleepwalking scene as was tradition, she placed it on the ground. London theatre-goers were very conservative and this "radical departure" occasioned a detailed account in the national press. However, such was Siddons’ popularity that putting the candle down became the new tradition and she became the Lady Macbeth that all others would be measured against. #Shakespeare http://bit.ly/1svNhb1 (Image: Portrait of Sarah Siddons as Lady Macbeth by George Henry Harlow, 1814 © The Garrick Club) - from the British Library FBpage,
