Great minds think- that people are shitty writers?

So, is Pope’s “Essay on Criticism” and Swift’s “Tatler n.230″ essentially the same article? Both of them are discussing the qualities of writing and the process of doing so. The only difference is honestly that Pope was more concerned with context whereas Swift was ripping people a new one based upon grammatical skill and overall writing clarity?

If thats the case, they would both have a FIELD DAY with this social media nonsense of today’s age and the way information is spread. People just regurgitate whatever they read on twitter, youtube, fartbook or even tumblr! Tumblr itself is founded upon this idea of re-posting other people’s ideas without even really giving them a second thought. “Dont believe what you see on the internet” is an expression derived from the tragic reality that EVERYONE BELIEVES WHAT THEY SEE ON THE INTERNET and dont bother looking stuff up for themselves. Swift shits on the guy who sends him the letter in 230 because he has no clue what the hell he’s talking about and its scary to consider that ove 300 years later, this ignorance of letting your mouth flap while being uninformed is still a thing.

I can’t remember if this was covered in class or not but did anyone ever notice the pun in Pinchwife’s name? Please tell me somebody else noticed something going on behind the lines here or is end of the semester stress eating away at my psyche?

Pinchwife. PINCH. WIFE.

PINCH.....FREAKING......WIFE. The whole name in itself is a summary of the meaning behind the play’s narrative: in how methods fail to confirm someone’s loyalty to someone else. His name is his downfall, he wants to control his wife but that leads to all of his troubles. By him literally “pinching” (restraining) his wife from leaving for London continuously throughout the text and this overprotective tendency he has results in her being more curious about leaving altogether! Pinching something makes it irritated, makes it swell up until it cant handle the pressure anymore.

Moral of the story, dont pinch your wives/girlfriends/lady of significance in your life, okay? Okay. Dont do it.

Not long ago, I googled Alexander Pope to do exam review and this article was the first thing to pop up. Hey! Hey! Would you lookit that! The universe is rewarding me for all of my educational endeavors! “Yeah man, you know who all of these people are, you can correlate it, so this sudden correlation of events is my little wink to you. Keep rocking it” I’m crazy, don’t listen to me.

The Country Wife’s One-Dimensional Characters

Restoration comedy is recognized for some of the strangest conventions when it comes to identifying people. There’s a lot of sexual feelings, innuendos and strange behaviour going on. But another thing to consider is that Restoration comedy consists of one-dimensional characters, caricatured by name, and driven by a single emotional drive such as seduction, lust, and greed. William Wycherley’s The Country Wife is no exception and is a great example.

Being how the comedic play is very lighthearted fun, it thrives on and embraces its absurdity and otherwise horrifying characters; those that would be horrible to exist in real life, but are simply exaggerations and played-off versions of archetypes.

We have Mr. Horner, which sounds quite closer to Horny.

We have Mr. Harcourt which sounds like Hardcore and Hard C**k We have Mr and Mrs Pinchwife, I don’t even need to say anything beyond their names.

The comedy has tricks and all things trivial. Either you’re boring or you’re a horrible person. Embrace the horrifying stupidity and entertain hilariousity that is The Country Wife!

I don’t know whether what I’m about to say is a compliment or criticism of restoration comedy conventions but the way you just described these one-dimensional characters reminded me a lot of Comedia dell’arte. This was a style of theatre in Italy during the 16th century (so it beat these guys to the punch) and the characters usually inhabited traits that were deemed stereotypical or “stock”.

There was Pantalone, the old merchant and Arlecchino who was a servant to name a few, but the funny part is they appeared in every single play! The stories would change but its always the exact same characters just in different situations.

Of course this was intentional, but its really got me thinking about the arts in general and how “samey” things can be after a while. That’s not a bad thing but even nowadays, how many Jennifer Anniston movies can Jennifer Anniston before those movies stop making a million bucks a pop?! People love familiar stories it seems, something they know and can grasp easily. What isn’t broke doesn’t need to be fixed sort of thing. Look at the newest Star Wars movie, it’s nearly the exact same movie as A New Hope (and even Phantom Menace) but people adored it and it made serious bank.

...wow. I just traveled through time . Restoration comedy, comedia dell’arte and Star Wars sure have a lot in common don’t they?

Consider This Moral of The Country Wife: Men and Women Should Talk more often

This passage is by William Wycherley, the author of The Country Wife. Strangely enough, the passage also reminds me of Swift’s The Lady’s Dressing Room. Men are thrown off guard by women’s truthfully disgusting but also relatable natural habitat, but it is their fault for having this fabricated and misguided expectation of them. If men and women talked more often, this wouldn’t be an issue.

But what of The Country Wife? Well, the narrative consists of much witty, blunt sexual dialogue, much of which is content that would make most people of the time uncomfortable for how taboo it was at the time. Much of this was due to how men and women didn’t talk bluntly about what makes them them, so when the time comes to dish out sexual innuendos and upfront behaviour, it becomes off-putting and discomforting for many readers. The concept of sex is so open and the title of the story insinuates the epitome of boredom.

Ultimately, Wycherley comes off as someone who says that we’ve been silent about things like this for far too long.

Isn’t it funny that this problem of men and women not talking to eachother seems to transcend time and space as the root of conflict between these two genders, whether in literature or reality?

Go as far back as the story of Adam and Eve and a simple conversation about “hey...there’s this snake over there and he told me to tell you to eat this apple okay bye” could have so easily solved EVERYTHING. Now, that would of course make for dull plot (not conflict, then whats the point) but even so, its a puzzling aspect found in these stories and in our cultural dynamic. What’s so scary about exchanging a few words?

We Forgot One

The character known simply as “The Rake” is a term to describe a womanizing man who throws away his good fortune/skill into seeking out drinks, women and pleasure.

There was the highly prominent example of James Bond. Although he is a noteworthy champion to this description, I feel there is at least a shoutout in order for this fellow:

This comedy from Louis C.K explores the nature of man’s urges for sexual intercourse yet inability to follow through sometimes.

In the poem “The Imperfect Enjoyment” the male character is unable to “throw” his “all dissolving thunderbolt” (because euphemisms are fun) during sex. He then shows anger towards his performance and instead chooses to take it out on the female. The funny part is that SHE is the one who should be angry for having all this buildup then no satisfying payoff for her. Not to mention that she seems to be the one taking more charge and control over the way things are going as opposed to him, turning the typical “men are the dominant” archetype on its head. She was so down for some wild stuff to happen...and nada. Hurts the pride of both genders in different ways.

Aphra Behn wrote a similar poem entitled “The Dissapointment” which revolves around a similar scenario however this time it is from the woman’s perspective, showing how she is equally irritated from the situation.

The clip above explores these two point of view in a very funny and truthful way.

While writing my “Ladies Dressing Room” blurb, this video came to mind.

Modern day equivalent to this poem?

Everybody Poops.

In Swift’s poem “The Lady’s Dressing Room”, he uses the example of a ladies’ dressing room to explore social conventions and archetypes for how we react to and perceive people doing their nasty business.

Notice the key word “people” in that previous sentence. People as in everyone. So although at first glance it would appear that Swift is targeting/exposing the female gender as being more vile than they would let on, there is more to it than that. Swift as an individual, was disgusted with the human body. He found it repulsive and upsetting. This is a mindset that can be noticed within many of his works such as “Gullivers Travels” or “A Modest Proposal” in which he doesn’t shy away from showing how disgusting our bodies can be (I mean...babies DO sound appetizing the way he puts it).

So when people try to argue that this text is purely a misogynistic one (which I do agree that there are elements of it within here) I feel that Swift was just targeting people in general. By using a ladies dressing room, this very prim and proper environment as the setting, it becomes symbolic to me for how we ALL put on a prim and proper act to shy away from the fact that both men and women do what can be basically described as very disgusting things (peeing, barfing, burping and even pooping).

Social structure has us ignoring that we are indeed still animals and this is just part of life, so who gives a shit about taking a shit? We should tear down our own personal “dressing rooms” now and then and realize we make a big deal over things that are completely natural.

Don’t be embarrassed.

I’m sure the person sitting closest to you poops too.

A Blog Post Concerning Why We Needed a Bunch of Books on Human Understanding.

So not to play the belligerent kid in the class or the snob. Who am I to tell these great historical writers what they should have deemed as worthwhile or not?

....all that being said, time for a mini-rant.

Upon thinking more and more about these readings by John Locke, the question arose in my mind as to “...ok cool....but why did we need four books telling us stuff that is pretty basic to grasp anyway?” Maybe I missed something, maybe its because I am reading it 326 years after it was released but even so. Why such long-winded explanations for things that should be summarized with a large sigh and a “duh?”

Uh...yeah, we are a blank slate at birth. What did we have to know after swimming around in mommy dearest for months on end? Not much. Sounds and total darkness is it. But even so, do you remember that? I don’t. By my understanding the capacity to “remember” or “acknowledge” only arises in our minds around the age of two or three. Over time I learnt that “red” things are red because....I don’t know....that’s just the way it is.

There was this other time that I went down the stairs to fast at a young age and slipped. My butt had a bruise for a week but hey! I LEARNED. I learned never to run down stairs again at risk of hurting myself. WOW! All this information registered in my mind in the span of....a few seconds?! And I didn’t even need an essay to explain it to me :) I’m going to go far!

...anyway...

To avoid spewing too much rage at my poor laptop, I suppose all that I’m trying to say is that I completely failed to see the point in this entire essay. Maybe it wasn’t common knowledge back then that...you learn things....by...learning (whoa, right?). Locke should have put his efforts elsewhere instead of writing extensively long explanations for simple ideas.

Please tell me though if I completely missed the point and there is a tragic irony here in that I learnt nothing and my brain cant register information properly.

Is it bad that this is what comes to mind when I do my school readings?

Micro-what-ia?

This was probably the first words out of anyone’s mouth back in 1665 when Hooke published his novel based upon taking a closer look at insects. As with the writings of Sprat, this book helped to bring larger awareness to the various fields of scientific research that weren’t generally understood or even known by the general public.

I mean, looking at gross bugs under a microscope? Who would have thought right? What was at this time considered a strange novelty has since been cemented as something of common practice (taking close looks at insects has become something of a pastime for several people, even a hobby).

In danger of rambling or drifting too far from my original point (its escaping me now if I even had one), I find it cool how all it takes is a little push or exposure for something to transition from niche to popular.

ahem, well, nevertheless...here is the first thing that caught my eye in this course. A passage from “The Author’s Apology” segment in Pilgrim’s Progress:

“ Art thou for something rare and profitable? Or would’st thou see a truth within a fable? Art thou forgetful? Wouldest thou remember From New-Year’s day to the last of December?”

Love the wordplay and tragic irony for myself in his asking if know the difference between Jan 1st and Dec 31st. Bunyan, pal...sometimes I forget what I had for breakfast.
