Still processing the fact that this horrific violence was in my city this time. I know this city and its people, the community, the place where it happened.

The deadliest mass shooting in US history happened in a place I’ve been before. I know one of the owners. Friends of friends are among those announced dead... at a place formerly considered a safe haven for LGBTQ and allies. How am I supposed to find the words?

Despite it being the beginning of my birthday, there are some girls on the 4th floor partying way harder than me. (An easy feat as I was just taking the dogs out back for a quick walk before bed.) The song changes at said party to "Wannabe." I casually sing along, because Spice Girls, but not loud enough for any unseen passersby or my ground floor neighbors to hear. The party girls are also singing along, though they are loud enough to hear quite clearly over the music. During this, I realize I am actively awaiting the rappy bridge bit to see if they know all the words... so as to decide whether I might want to be friends with these girls. Yes, world, I've just turned 26 years old and I am actively judging whether I want to be friends with women my age based on whether or not they know the story from A to Z. So 20 years later, I guess I'm still picking friends based on the same things I did in 1996.
