thinking about incapable of fear georgie barker x low empathy melanie king.

thinking about people finding out georgie doesn't feel fear and immediately starting up with the 'oh that must be so nice!' and 'I'm jealous of you!' type stuff because they don't understand how difficult and dangerous life can be when your body doesn't have a built-in warning system. thinking about melanie telling people she's low empathy and ending up with them assuming she's heartless and inhuman because they think empathy is a moral virtue and not a neutral trait.

thinking about georgie becoming overcautious and distant to try and compensate for her lack of fear. thinking about melanie leaning into the ghost bullet because if people are going to think she's cruel and violent regardless at least she should get something out of it. thinking about melanie going through shitty therapist after shitty therapist trying to find one who doesn't think her low empathy is a problem that can or needs to be fixed. thinking about georgie getting frustrated with the people in the tunnels for worshipping her when what gives her power during the apocalypse made her life so hard for such a long time.

thinking about georgie barker and melanie king bonding over being made to feel like they're missing some integral part of existence, and learning that only they can define their humanity and nobody has the right to tell them otherwise.

i do find the rules around clothes fascinating because of how made up it all is. we invented the idea of covering our bodies from the elements because we lack fur like other mammals and then made up all these rules around it and now people will unironically tell you "men cant wear skirts its unnatural" girl none of this is natural. we are born naked and made up the rest as we went along. hope this helps.

I think the tma characters generally Know about contemporary queer labels and identities, they're really not that old and jon uses language like "male presenting" and georgie and melanie have jobs that require them to be very on social media. it's not out of the question that any of them might have pride stickers on their laptops or would introduce themselves with their pronouns if they thought the social situation was relaxed and gay enough. the important and beautiful thing to remember is that this does not preclude any of them from having extremely weird internalized queerphobia and very repressed relationships with their gender and sexuality, because I am a young adult in the year of our lord two thousand and twenty five and I know plenty of people with those exact problems. jon can know what the colors on the asexual flag mean and be casual friends with trans people and still turn around and say "well my issues with sex and my body are because I'm uhhh a fucked up little freak? probably?" and that wouldn't be any contradiction. you don't need to temporally lock him into a mid 90s understanding of queerness, he can be the pinnacle of a modern man and have issues aplenty. x
