He was new, that much was obvious to everyone who laid eyes on them. Because no one, no one talked to Meg in such a familiar tone. And they certainly didn’t gawk at her the way this kid was. Yes, they had to be similar in age but Meg couldn’t help but attribute his attitude to the blissful ignorance found in youth. She had been taking care of herself far too long to still have that bliss. And she could certainly see some of it in his eyes although that may have simply been a projection of her irritation with him.
”No one sits by me. Maybe you ought to head to another chair, new kid.”
Was she being unfair? Probably. Did she care? Not in the least. She had better things to do then babysit the new kid through biology class. In fact, she hated talking to anyone of her own age, this boy included. She had absolutely no intentions of letting him sit next to her.
“Correction, Miss Masters,” Meg’s head jerked around in response to the teacher’s voice. “He is going to sit by you. I think it’s about time that someone got you to pay attention in a class. I’m sure Mr. Novak will assume this responsibility.”
Unfortunately for the boy next to her, this comment turned Meg’s wrath from the teacher back to him. She rounded on him with a face like a thunderstorm, dark and dangerous. “Is that true, Novak? You think you’re going to waltz in here and whine at me until I pay attention? Well, I’ve got news for you, people that cross me at this school don’t last very long. As a transfer, I would say your odds aren’t very good at the moment.” She then turned to stare at the front of the classroom, her expression still furious. She was intent on ignoring him until some suitable means for punishment came along.
People who crossed her didn't last long. Was that a threat? Was this girl threatening to murder him? That did concern the new student. Being placed near a bully -- or worse, a killer -- was never the sort of situation he handled well. He only hoped that miss Masters was being rhetorical with her threats. Dying on the first day at a new school was not on his to-do-list. Dying on any day wasn't on any of his lists, for that matter.
For the next couple of moments, Castiel sat quietly -- a little bit awkwardly, too -- staring in the opposite direction. He wasn't entirely sure how to respond to this girl's immediate aggressiveness; had he done something to bother her? All he'd said was a small defense. Oh, man. Angering an aesthetic-looking girl on his very first day. What has he done?
It isn't until another few moments that he looks sheepishly at the brunette, though he glances away until he can muster up some sort of confidence -- enough to introduce himself, at least.
"...My name is Castiel, by the way. It's, um..."
C'mon, Castiel. Don't trail off in the middle of a sentence. That's not the way socialization works. Should he keep going? What should he say? How do regular people introduce themselves? Think, think...
He offers another careful smile eventually, though the boy has a fairly nervous look in his bluish eyes, "It is very nice to meet you, miss Masters."
