Ah. Mars City.
What was left of it, anyhow.
Taggart had been here before-- he remembered this place, bustling with life for just a few moments before everything went wrong. Demons had flooded the place, and it was up to the lone marine corporal to stop it at any cost-- and god-damn it, the others never even gave him a helmet. Who’d have thought he’d need to hold his breath, pray for the best, and nearly choke to death on noxious gases from gas leaks, or Hell’s smoke and dust and ash, or Mars’s fucking air?
Well, he knew to not make that mistake again, and he currently found himself at the old, abandoned site yet again, taking deep breaths as he did. Ever since the first time going into Hell and seeing things people shouldn’t have ever seen, Tag was a different man. Standing at the old lobby, he was having to remember his mission. Apparently, there was some kind of viral. . Thing. It had properties of a demon, but no one really knew what it was, and Tag was sent to investigate. Adjusting his helmet, he peered around, only to carefully take it off to take in a few breaths. Ah. That same old scent. Blood. Dust. Death, too, really. He was too used to it.
Tired eyes glanced around at the familiar lobby, with its metallic floors and uncomfy cushions, stained with blood and covered in dust, with wires hanging from the ceiling, parts of the metal walls broken through to reveal the inner machinations of old machines now long abandoned. . A weak sigh escaped him as he started to make his way for the halls, only to jolt-- he could swear he heard something, and it made the marine freeze in his boots, his breathing picking up a little as he looked around.
No matter what, whenever he arrived to this place, he always felt a sense of urgency and fear. He needed to get this mission done. He needed to get home and get to his son. He needed to leave.
No. No, Taggart. You couldn’t leave. You’ve dealt with this before, haven’t you? Hush.
Slowly, cautiously, carefully, he stepped along, managing to keep a serious expression on his face. .
He was going to make the biggest mistake of his life.
A wheezy voice rang out from him, managing to force itself to be audible, despite the pain he was obviously in.
“H-Hhhello? Hhghk--. .” His voice, instantly, faltered, a hand moving from his gun to his throat. He couldn’t remember if he had his water with him, it was painful. .
. . He could already tell just breaking the silence in this place was gonna get him killed. Though, in a strange way, he thought it’d be better than going on another damn mission for. . Well, what was left of the UAC and the ARC.

Verse 1: Into Sandy City - POST-DOOM 3
takes place during/after DOOM 3, yes, named after that one song
usually is just kinda Taggart when he’s more-so serious and intense, kinda like how he’s seen in the games
his throat and lungs got fucked up from all the shit he had to endure with everything without a HELMET (I SEE YOU DOOM 3, I PLAYED YOU, I KNOW YOUR TRICKS), so he’s pretty quiet
he still sometimes speaks! but instead of a kinda slightly-deep voice, now it’s very wheezy and raspy and it hurts. a lot.
he’s seen some shit
literally he’s seen a lot of his fellow marines die besides for a few lucky ones and some workers, had to fight demons left and right, while the dark lord apparently wanted to play tricks on him and jumpscare him every so often (dude it sometimes fuckin got me honestly)
had one of those little spiderbots as a pet named xander, but it got killed by demons, so he’s just?? sad??
xander was his fuckin b a b y
he’s got a 4 year old son named andy! andrew cole taggart! after the events of doom 3 he really just kinda tries to focus on being a good dad
he still lets himself get kinda pushed around by his superiors (not much considering he mightve fuckin beaten his commanding officer to near death like doomguy, but hes still a bit of a pushover)
has the mentality that ‘if someone’s gotta do it, it’d might as well be me’, doesnt want anyone else dealing with demons
he’s very, very panicky at this age, especially like, post-doom 3, because his mind is trying to get around the fact he saw a LOT of people die and literally went into hell and had to fight DEMONS to survive

he’s a bit older now! has some more scars and a nasal cannula to help him with his breathing with some oxygen supports in his armor
this sorta stuff won’t really show up on his icons sadly :L
his son’s also older! he’s around 20 by now, and happily joined the military like his dad!
tag’s literally, at this rate, having to hold the fort while everything goes wrong, and has to be sent off to mars after the events of 2016 to clean up the mess because he’s dealt with demons
he’s doing everything in his power to make sure his son doesnt deal with demons but uhhhhhh cue doom eternal
at this rate, tag is just like. the doom slayer’s janitor. he has to clean shit as much as he can and clean out any straggling demons, whether it be on mars, on earth, or phobos, literally where his human hands can reach he has to clean out remaining demons
he’s still panicky? he’s just VERY worried about andy, and is currently trying to look for him

you think he’s being quiet cause hes listening to his superior? no hes being quiet because he’s literally about to strangle the dude with his own hands

but that might just be because hes seen how charismatic hayden can be and is lowkey just “ill follow this dude! he seems better than everyone else ive dealt with!”
but he has suspicions lowkey on HOW things all went fucking wrong and might throw hands?

tag genuinely cant remember who he used to be, only knows himself as the “DM-3″ (or, doom marine 3 ;])
all he knows is that he’s gotta look for his son that he can barely remember while he fucks up demons with newly-given rip and tear powers from the rip and tear gods
he didn’t actually meet the sentinels! in fact, tag’s literally just found himself starting to get so used to fighting demons to the point he started to know of their moveset
the rip and tear power shit?? sarcophagus-sleep may or may not have helped him with some runes they carved on his palms and soles. gym-goers hate him!
he’s not nearly as strong as THE Doom Slayer but he’s indeed stronger than he used to be pre-sarcophagus
he’s. he’s literally trying his best. please for the love of god let him have a break.

Belly rubs? He was more than happy to oblige, giving Bella plenty, and giving more scritches for good measure. Who was a good girl? Bella was, that’s for sure. He looked up to Taggart, still grinning from petting the dog. “Alright, let’s be off, then.” He said, standing up.
Jan led them away from that place, making small talk along the way. “You’re a soldier? What branch do you serve in?” He asked, genuinely curious. He had nothing but respect for those who served, especially since his fathers, both biological and adoptive, had been soldiers in the past.
Taggart couldn’t stop smiling, admittedly, his eyes having lightened up quite a bit as he held Bella in his arms for most of the way, letting her hang out in his arms as she snuggled up to him, her tongue sticking out of her mouth. She was sleepy after all of those belly rubs, but boy, was she happy. She let out another happy little huff through her nose, keeping her furry cheek pressed against Tag’s chest.
‘well...’ He began, lightly tapping against the leash’s handle, closing his eyes as he did. ‘.. I serve in the United States Marines as a, uh, corporal.’ He continued, a drop of sweat going down his face after a moment or so as a thought crossed his mind, hitting him like a freight train. Andy. He needed to look for Andy still. And, by god, was he trying. ‘... i’m currently just trying to look for my son.’ He attempted to explain after a moment, ‘i’m not-- i’m not from here.’ . . He was sure he wouldn’t be able to tell Jan about all of his trips to Hell, if he hadn’t already-- god, he couldn’t remember-- it was classified information, the UAC told him, but he knew he had to tell someone. Desperately. . but he’d wait on that for now.
Bella seemed to sense his distress. Raising her head, she was already moving to sit up in his arms to lick at his cheek, making Tag weakly chuckle.

Hearing that he had permission to pet Bella, Jan grinned, and knelt down to give her neck scratches. He raised his eyebrows upon hearing that the man was a marine. “You’re a soldier? Heh..guess I was worried for nothing then.” He gave a sheepish grin.
That said, he was happy to offer the marine a helping hand getting home. “Yeah, I can walk you both there. Street thugs might be more likely to leave us alone if they see me with you.” He wasn’t trying to brag, per se, it was just that he’d built a reputation as one of the most deadly mercenaries in the world in spite of his young age, and anybody who saw that golden cross patch on his jacket knew what they were dealing with.
Bella was happily pressing into his scritches, letting out a little bark again, eyes sparkling in delight as she usually moved around, very happy for attention, her tail wagging faster as she moved to lay on her side, huffing and happily moving around. She demanded belly rubs! This was getting Taggart to laugh, having to keep one hand to his throat, one eye squeezing shut from the faint pain from that, but it didn’t bother him for long. Just a simple laugh, it wouldn’t hurt him too badly compared to full-on speaking.
However, he looked up to Jan again, having been peering down at Bella as he nodded his head. He knew things were much more different in this place, so, at this rate, he’d need all the help he could get, but he knew he could handle himself. He still had his guns, albeit safely put away at what he could call his home, only having his small pistol in case he needed to use it. ‘right,’ he tapped, his expression softening a bit. ‘i think it’d be good if we got going, then. i’m sure it’d be best to make sure to get back to the safer side of town before anything else happens, haha...!’
. . Finally, though, at least he met a friendly face.
Open Starter - Panic

He was right, of course. If he didn’t fight the demons, who would? This man had the same first name as his Slayer brother. Huh. Joe looks at him, wondering what he should do next to help Taggart. As he was now, it was only a matter of time before the demons overwhelmed him. There was no way he was subjecting the marine to the Divinity Machine, but maybe….
“I could train you a bit. Probably give you better gear, too.” He offered. “I’m Joseph Blazkowicz, but feel free to call me Joe. Former marine myself, but lately I’ve taken a new job in hunting down Hell for daring to even exist. Put it this way; humanity fears the demons, but the demons fear me. So much that they’ve given me a nickname to match: The Doom Slayer.”
Awe had spread across Taggart’s face as he was listening to him, and he abruptly sat up, about to say something-- and he, indeed, spoke! His voice had an audible croak, every breath sounding like it strained him. However, he looked to the other man, every word Joe said, he clung to. He looked like a little kid being told an awe-inspiring story, and for Taggart, it was amazing. He managed to swallow before sitting up a bit more.
“Y-You’d-- hh-- y-you’d really. . ?” He faltered a little, but, with one hand to his throat, he was already beginning to tap against his chest plate with his other hand, a faint excited sparkle visible in his eyes. He had to stop himself for a moment to focus on his breathing. At this rate, he knew he needed some support when it came to that. He was lucky he could still breathe, at least.
‘would you really train me?’ He asked, and the fact that he heard the nickname just left him in pure fucking excitement. He was sure he had seen his abilities against those demons when he found himself collapsing at the man’s feet earlier. So fast, so intense. . With a rage he never saw before.

He swallowed hard, his throat burning as the saliva trailed down, sweat beading his brow as he tried to stay stone-faced. It was at least a year or so since his first trip to Hell, since he had first fought the Cyberdemon, seen the horrors that no man should ever see, and managed to return alive. He had to deal with therapists, doctors, and all sorts of things since then. His breaths were wheezy, but he forced himself to speak, a croak being heard in his voice, “Yes, sir.” Obediently, diligently, he replied, his gaze focused on the man that stood behind the metallic table, a PDA placed nearby, revealing images and reports of all sorts of things.
“You care for him. Don’t you?” His superior inquired, causing Taggart to speak again, this time in an instant. “Y-Yes, sir.” A wheeze followed, his lips faintly pursing as he felt fear strike him. The marine across from him leaned forward, hands pressing do these demonswn on the table as his eyes settled on Taggart. “Then, we’ll need you to come back to Mars City.” He said, “In case there’s another Hell invasion like before. You’re the one that’s dealt with it. You survived, Taggart. What would happen if they had managed to get off of Mars and to Earth? I know your boy’s staying with. .” He paused, as if looking to Taggart’s now visibly devastated expression, his chest tightening up, and his throat closing. His son. . What would happen to his son?
He had to keep him safe. The boy was dear to him, the closest thing he had to family, his precious Andy. . What would happen if he stayed at home all day? He needed to protect his family. No, not just his family-- he had to protect everyone. Someone had to be the one to delve into Hell.
It had to be him.
Someone had to do the job, and it had to be him.
“I’ll-- I’ll do it, sir. I’ll come back.” He said. The superior bit the inside of his cheek, before speaking up, “Good. At ease, then, corporal. Go home and pack your things. The troops back at Mars are gonna give you a warm welcome. Dismissed.”
Taggart found himself weakly nodding, his heart sinking in defeat. He would have to be the one to work his ass off, to never see an end in sight. He felt almost like a blob of jelly, something easily molded by those around him, to be rolled into a ball, then made into a husk. As he dismissed himself, he gave one more hushed yes, sir as he departed from the office, walking down the hallways with a look of a grim realization that this would be his life. This would be his fate, to battle demons, over and over again, when he was just a mere man.
He felt as though he had no mouth-- and he desperately had to scream, but how could he, when the scream he wanted to let out at all would just fall upon deaf ears?

Seeing the man clutching at his throat, Joe told him he’d be back momentarily, and left to go find him a bottle of water. Upon returning, he handed the bottle to him. “Take it from me, no regular person can deal with demons. Even if they’re a marine, they can’t handle all of Hell. Eventually it’ll be too much, and you’ll lose your mind.” Ask him how he knows.
“I’ve fought these fuckers for God knows how long, but I’ve had the fortune of being enhanced to do so. You haven’t, and it’s clearly taken its toll on you. Who are you? What reason do you have to keep plunging into Hell at the UAC’s beck and call?”
He was visibly grateful for the bottle, very, very fucking grateful. He held the bottle for a moment, having to take a second to calm himself before he opened it, already just chugging the damn thing like he wasn’t going to live tomorrow. For poor Taggart’s case, that could very well be an option if he went into Hell again. .
He had gone silent-- a bit more than before after he removed the water bottle from his lips, closing it before wiping his mouth with his arm. The cold was already soothing his throat. He could breathe. He could breathe, thank god. He took a few deep breaths. In, out, in, out. After a moment, though, he answered the questions to the best of his abilities, his hands choosing to tap, a bit faster than he usually did. At this rate, he felt like he was speaking to his commanding officer, so he had gotten a bit formal.
‘flynn taggart, sir-- i’m a corporal in the united states marines,’ he began, quickly, ‘i know i’m not well-equipped to deal with these. . things, but someone has to deal with them so then they don’t kill any more of my comrades, and i don’t want them crawling out and reaching my family, either. maybe it’s not the best choice for me to do-- to be ordered around like an animal or a machine, but. .’ He visibly faltered, his hand slowly down in its movements for a moment. Hesitating.
‘. . i feel like someone’s gotta do it, sir.’

Jan couldn’t help the big smile that found its way onto his face at the sight of the puppy bounding to him. He knelt down to meet her, but stopped when he noticed the ‘emotional support’ vest she wore, and gave a sad smile. “Sorry girl,” he began, “I’d love to pet you and make friends, but you’re at work, so I can’t do that right now.”
He looked back up to the man. “Only reason I’m asking is because this is kind of a rough part of town. Not the kind of place you’d want to go walking with a small puppy.” He said, standing back up. “Where are you staying? I could walk you back there.”
Taggart tilted his head a little as he looked over, though he gave a little dismissive wave, managing to sign to Jan, ‘don’t worry-- you can pet her! i give you permission, haha.’ He, very lightly, smiled, though it faded a bit when he listened to his explanation. Oh. He could honestly tell it was a more rough part of town. Although perhaps, from what he could tell, some things indeed looked like the nicer parts of town, he could tell something was. . Off.
Looking to Jan, he had to take a moment before signing again, ‘i’d be able to keep her safe-- being a marine from where i’m from has its perks, i guess. i’m lucky i managed to get a few licenses.’ He paused, but then continued, ‘though, i would like some help getting back home-- i live a bit north from here, maybe at least five blocks down. . Bella can walk a lot! it’s just sometimes hard for me to recognize some of the buildings here. i’m, uh. still a bit new around this area. .’
. . He couldn’t help but be embarrassed, admitting that. Bella’s tail was wagging slightly, eyes looking up at Jan. A tempting situation. After all, Taggart had indeed given permission to pet her.

Joe raised an eyebrow. This was only his second time he’s had to go to Hell? And he was sent by himself and woefully unprepared to fight the demons? Joe felt rage bubbling in his chest; the familiar Slayer rage he was well acquainted with. Hold on a minute….
“Did you say the UAC? As in too greedy and stupid for their own good UAC? Exploits Hell and its resources for the ‘betterment of mankind’ even when they’re only in it for their own interests?” Things were starting to make sense. If the UAC were involved with this man’s trips to Hell, then…. “I’m guessing that the guy sending you is Hayden.” Note to self: Riddle what’s left of the doctor’s body with holes.
He jolted at that-- he knew about the UAC? Taggart was hesitating in his responses, his eyes just staying fixated on Joe for the longest time. Wide eyes, tense, his mind trying to process everything through his faint, yet obvious panic. He swallowed hard, which instantly sent a burning pain running through his throat, his eyes squeezing shut for a moment.
There was an audible croak from him, though his hand moved to tap against his chest plate, much faster than the previous time, ‘i don’t know.’ He tried to desperately explain to him, ‘never met the boss himself, don’t know if it’s this Dr. Hayden or maybe one of the other higherups. but it was the UAC. since day one, but no one there’s really dealt with demons besides me.’ He let out a little cough after that, his head having to tilt to the side as his hand clutched at his neck. Christ, was it painful. .
“. . hhh. .”

A halt from the enervated marine, though he sighed quietly as he gripped onto a leash, and connected to said leash was. . A dog. A small puppy, if anything, wearing a vest that read ‘emotional support’, looking to be a golden retriever. She turned, with her big brown eyes peering up at the approaching figure. Friend? Friend!! Surely a friend! She was already bounding over, barking with her tail wagging, hoping to play! New friend! Her ears flopped up and down, her tongue slightly sticking out of her mouth.
Taggart had been trying to get used to life on this strange Earth. He was, indeed, trying his hardest to find ways to get home, ANY way to get home. After crawling out of Hell after a retrieval mission gone wrong, Taggart knew he had to survive through other means. His eyes settled on the kid-- looked like he was around fourteen, fifteen, maybe. He shifted a little at the question. Dressed in a simple sleeveless white shirt tucked into deep green pants, which were tucked into combat boots, Taggart was managing to make a living in this strange place. Anything to try to get home.
‘just out on a walk. it got stuffy at home.’ He truthfully signed after managing to awkwardly hold the leash, though he grunted as he watched the pup try to sniff at this new person’s feet, with Taggart grunting quietly before he spoke. He felt like he was tearing his vocal chords even more. . And, honestly, he wondered if he could even call that dingy apartment home, in this world he was in. So much like Earth, but. .
“. . B-Bella. .” He wheezed out her name. He planned on bringing this dog home with him-- he was gonna let Xander have a fellow pup at home, he wasn’t gonna leave Bella behind.

Pure suspicion was the first thing that crossed Taggart’s face.
He was very grateful for the offer, indeed, but ever since his trips to Hell, he always couldn’t help but be cautious. Taking the health vial into his hands, he studied it, his gaze filled with curiosity and fatigue. His fatigue seemed to work faster than his mind, though, as he was already focused on just. . Using the vial the best he could. He had to force off the top of the vial with his hand before taking a small sip, testing it.
Was it poisoned? No. Not from what he could tell. Given, poison would honestly be amazing right now, just so then he wouldn’t have to go back to Hell again.
. . . It took a moment. . Then a few more. .
Before the dude just tilted his head back and chugged the rest like there was no tomorrow, letting out a slight grunt-- it was soothing for his throat. It didn’t feel scratchy, nor like it was nearly closing up often. He had to take a moment to take deep, slow breaths, before his gaze returned to the large man in question.
Raising his hand up after tucking the vial away, wiping his mouth with his other hand, he moved to sign the best he could,
‘thank you so much. . my throat feels better already.’ His gaze hadn’t changed much-- it stayed as serious as ever, trying to get used to the strange Fortress all around him. So Gothic-looking. Felt like he was in a story he’d tell his son. . But the technology was so advanced. Sure, he’s seen quite a bit of advanced tech at the UAC, but this. .
‘who. .’ He stopped himself in his signing for a moment. ‘who are you, if you don’t mind me asking?’
This was one of the few times Taggart wasn’t panicking so much. He didn’t get why. Sure, he was a little intimidated of the guy helping him, but. . Maybe that was why. This guy was helping him, and he knew he’d need all the help he could get.
