I won’t speak for all liberals, but I’d like to see a future where it isn’t a big deal for a woman in full modesty garb to sit next to a drag queen in NYC. It’s become a bit of a sensation, but her and I were just existing. The freedom to simply be yourself in a sea of people who aren’t like you is a freedom we all deserve.
Going into this project, I considered everyday actions people perform. Through an internet search, I discovered that the average American spends over 32,000 hours of their lives eating and drinking. I wondered how many of these 32,000 hours performing the same repetitive motions (using cutlery, cooking, baking, pouring, washing, and so on), are done consciously. Furthermore, if we are not necessarily conscious when we feed ourselves, what are the implications for the surrounding environment?
I began to achieve photos related to food making, food consumption and environmental matters such as oil spills and plastic waste.
I approached the challenge of depicting movement, motion and implied time by choosing dominate photos related to food consumption. I tried to find images that imply movement and motion, such as the stirring of a bowl or the steam coming out of a cup of coffee. I approached implied time by incorporating environmental elements, (which I am stating are happening now), through cut and paste, composite and overlapping imagery. I chose a square canvas as a reference to Instagram, a common platform for posting photos of food, with super dope filters.
The name of this series is mindless consumption as I am implicating the viewer as being a probable contributor and creator of the destruction of the environment.
The justices vacated an appeal’s court decision in favor of a transgender boy, Gavin Grimm, and sent the case back for further consideration.
What this is: Disappointing, infuriating, and a direct result of President Trump’s decision to withdraw President Obama’s previously issued guidance on transgender youth.
What this isn’t: The end of the road. The past few months have seen a historic growth in support for transgender protections at the highest level. Thousands of individuals and organizations have signed on to the amicus briefs—major medical associations, unions representing millions of teachers, national religious leaders, elected officials at the local, state, and federal level, and ordinary citizens concerned about the rights and dignity of their fellow human beings.
This decision does not void any existing Title IX legal protections for transgender students, and similar cases regarding the fundamental rights of transgender students in schools are pending throughout the circuit courts.
The momentum on this issue is clear, and it isn’t going to be readily reversed—at least not if we all continue to work for what’s right. We remain committed to standing with Gavin, to supporting the ACLU, and ultimately toward the passage of explicit, comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for all LGBTQ Americans. It’s more important now than ever before.
