This was a sitrom ("demon blood", human descended from the tainted blood of demon worshippers or those exposed to the energies of the demonic realm). He was a master in the field of Dark Manipulation, and came ever closer to dancing with it in order to learn how to manipulate it.
He experimented to find a way to bind darkness to the human spirit without letting it take over and occupy it completely. Many cultists of Bwtes (the Star of the Void, the manifestation of Darkness in the universe) chased that ambition by taking children born with the essence of darkness and, through a ritual, offer them to darkness, binding their souls to it, creating a powerful individual with a limiteless source of dark power and innate ability to harness it, But such process would eventuall lead to the human losing themselves to darkness and turning into a shadow, sooner or later.
His idea was, that if a child was exposed to darkness from an early age, given enough magical means to counter it, keep it at bay, and develope the ability to use it, they'd eventually adapt to it, just like humanoids always adapt to everything and anything, and this would open the way for a future race of humanoid with a natural handle and resilience to darkness.
He lost many orphan children to the void through his experiments in the Abyss, but eventually came through with a child who fulfilled all his hopes. He left him with his amulet of the void, which was specially powerful thanks to being imbued with his essence from years of use. This child, called simply Ohrn, was left with his notes on darkness and on how to reach the surface. Without his amulet, however, Tariq, who was once one of the children forcibly bound to Bwtes from birth, was eventually consumed by the darkness.
Ohrn would meet him in the future, as a shadow, nothing but ghost of the person he used to be.
