Let’s go to sleep in Shanghai
I have traveled all over the Caribbean. As a Trinidadian I enjoy the city life incorporated with Shanghai. Island life will always be my favorite thing, Having access to quality food and healthy meals are priceless to me.
I do howveer enjoy how easy the commute around China is.
Say Yes to the ..
Upon graduation alot would determine whether I accepted a job offer. I would have to be paid in U.S. dollars and be able to afford a lifestyle that could accomodate my family moving as well.
I enjoyed working at my company however i felt there w as ALOT I wanted to learn that no one had time to teach me. Many comapnies expect you to have experience but not many expect to teach which is where things fall short.
What is it about China?
There were major cultural differences in not only the social aspect but the work environment as well. China has managed to grow rapidly through technological advances however the country lacks social reform.
Chinese work lie begins generally at 10-11 am. Lunch follows from 12:30-2 p.m. The entire office normally goes to lunch around the same time. The rest of the afternoon is followed by multiple meetings daily. The staff seems to stay extremely late nights to complete each assignment. Work is not divided between more than one day and giving a timeline.
Chinese lifestyle is substancially relaxed. People storm,push, and shove to get on the metro however elad very carefree lifestyles. Smoking is still somehow a “thing”. Despite the amount of pork and tobacco in the Chinese diet many elders can be seen climbing subway stairs and on the daily commute. They remain active and apart of the community.
Some parts of China have seemingly been neglected in the rebuild many people live in poverty. We passed areas where clothing lay hanging on wires outside of the front windows facing the street. The streets in urban areas remain extremely clean while “Old China” is covered in streams of food remains.
It amazes me how the French have managed to maintain their ownership in some parts of China which are dedicated to their own family life and careers. There are many European tourist and international tourist however People of Color are still assessed as if a strange delicacy.
It’s All About Diversity Baby..
My company lacked diversity, most of the staff was Chinese yet some of there campaigns were created by foreign companies who wanted to appeal to foreigners who were visiting China. Having diverse staffing will allow for each client to receive a broad range of information on how to brand and relaunch brand imaging. I was the only Trinidadian American in the company and before my leave, there was a Southern American interning.

The office was a balance between constant meetings, that I was left out of, shifts in energy and the smell of authentic Chinese cuisine. I spent days at my corner cubical, awaiting task.
The very first week I was given various videos to edit for a luxury Italian brand. Following my audio and visual edits I worked with the brand throughout the entire month creating social media content, advertising copyright and creating production references.
I was able to do market research an analytics for multiple brands.

More like the ability to commute by myself, strong independent and beautiful locks flowing down the stairs behind me as I take giant strides to the office. My sponsor company is a mutlinational company with offices in China, North America, and Taiwan.
Our company is divided into three service branches public relations, event services and digital marketing.

I'm climbing the steepest side of the Great Wall and I was almost defeated by the heat. I turned to see a fellow Queen behind me. I was like "hey sis, we got this." We climbed and we climbed.
When I finally reached the point of satisfaction, I turned to myside and she said,"Sis can I get a pic, I dont see too many of us out here."
THAT SMILE IS REAL LOVE, REAL JOY, REAL HAPPINESS, AND REAL UNDERSTANDING.

Great Wall of China
Weekends Are For Get Aways
Each and every weekend, we gather our belongings, our laptops our purses and skip down the street to the trains. I find myself dancing from People’s Square to the hotel. Drifting into a musical abyss and only exiting for brief moments of seriousness. Last Friday, I packed my bookbag and prepared for my 12 hour over night train to Beijing. Cramps, a few snacks and my music were all the things keeping me awake depsite my energy being drained. I was excitedand not just any kind of excited but I was BIG EXCITED!
I knew our Study Abroad was coming to a close and the only thing making it bittersweer was the fact that we were going to a place many people only dream about. I was a Black girl and soon I would become a Black Woman.
3/4 of the team headed to Beijing to see all the wonders of China. We found ourselves in the Forbidden City, In Tiannemen Square and ofcourse climbing the Great Wall each experience increasingly greater than the next. Our tour guide Robert Wen, like me was filled with pixy dust, joy, and everything that made China perfect. He reminded me of the reasons I chose this study abroad, the reasons I wanted to fall in love with ymself in this foriegn place.
He guided us through the streets. He stopped briefly to explain each attraction and was even sweet enough to remove the old women who were fascinated with touching my hair. He was the absoulte best.
AWe stopped briefly for some authentic Chinese food and might I add it was amazing! Robert ordered all of our dishes and made sure to ask us if anything else was needed or required. We stuffed our faces and loaded back in the bus, headed up to the Great Wall.
I was walking to the cable lift on the great wall when I saw two brothers walking towards me.. I couldnt resist it .. I felt my arms raising and suddenly a hug! THEY HUGGED ME! HE SAID "HEY SIS I SEE YOU OUT HERE." We hugged and we hugged and we laughed. Robert, my tour guide and my fellow classsmates asked if I knew him. All I could say was no but thats my brother. They didn't get it but he did and it made all the difference. That’s the power of melanin. Thats the power of my glow. I was overwhelmed with joy. They knew exactly what it was to be black in China.
I continued walking to the chair lift, and before I knew it my legs were daggling over grass and trees but up ahead was a sight for sore eyes, the beautiful historic, Great Wall of China. We got off the chair and begun climbing the steepest point step by step seeing an indescribable beauty! We posed for photos took selfies, and knew that despite our differences we were one.
Black Face, Yellow Office
Is it yellow face, if my black face blends into this grey cubical?
Am I wrong for feeling like a second grader, searching for my perfect crayon in my Crayola box. What should I do? Can they see me? Or are they just ignoring my presence?
The saddest thing about language is that as beautiful as it is nothing has divided more people than the tongue.
Work, Work, Work, WUK WUK WUK!
As i beat my face to the gods, prepping for my first day butterflies fluttered in my stomach, reminding me that fear was something I couldn’t avoid. I knew for months that I would be employed for a summer in China, but i had no idea what that meant. Fit Me 335 fell sprinkling my baby blue dress with coffee colored foundation. Screeches rang from my throat as I begun twitching. This was my third outfit change in 5 minutes and now this. Terrence was waiting downstairs and i had exactly 3 minutes to attempt to scrub off this stain.
I chucked my dress to the floor, scooting on my knees, rummaging through ym dresser. “Nope!” “I don’t like this either.” “I look too desperate” “Business Casual Shavonne, business casual!” At last, my blazer jacket dress, cream dress, and heels were perfect! I through my purse together and skipped to breakfast.
Terrence appeared after me, all black, tote bag, and cool as ever. His calm demeanor soothed my nerves. We were chosen for a reason now it was up to us to make our lights shine. We watched the NBA game as we stuffed our faces, and headed to People’s Square taking long purposeful strides. It was our time. We are young, intelligent, and attractive and IN CHINA! I’ve worked quite a number of places however none matched my experience at BICG. As we walked into the office, no one expected us. They stared as my tongue and face where two foriegn objects. Terrene spoke, and they moved. They knew they understood. We were shuffled into a conference room to meet our superiors. I shook hands, sweaty palms, and all. I don’t know what’s going to happen next but i have to be here for a reason. I have to walk in my alignment.

Finding Freedom in A Communist Country Just a few short months ago, I discovered that I was accepted to a Study Abroad program in Shanghai. After a year of no’s suddenly, I was being blessed. I felt overwhelmed with having an option. I spent much of 2015, sculpting my life around the short filling attention I was receiving from my partner. Low and behold, I finally had another opportunity to prove that I was not just another “pretty girl,” rather that my years of hard work, dedication and great vibrations had lead me to this moment.
I was told that if I went, I would come home alone because this choice didnt “fit” what was needed and required from my poisonous situationship. Months of toxic waste was finally being dumped from me yet I still felt guilty about choosing this career move.
I was imprisoned by my own excellence. I felt a slave to the concept that I Really Could Do Bad All By Myself” when truthfully I was excelling at a rate unfamiliar to my partner who refused to see my light. But this post is as much about them as it is about me. It took selfishness to push me to follow my heart, and accept whatever came with choosing me.
I’m on a hunt to find peace. Peace within myself. Peace within my choices. Peace within being a complete woman.
How does an artist find peace in a communist country?
They break the chain. They understand that this is only one chapter in a novel of plush satisfaction.
