“I think that’s a good way to spend a party too” She smirked in return as she took another sip of her drink before leaning over to refill the cup. “Private is always preferred” she nodded and raised a brow at him “Oh? Well maybe you should make a move on that one who caught your eye”

Shawn looked back at her with a cocky smile on his face, “That’s not such a bad idea” he said when she said he should make a move on the girl who caught his eye. Shawn stood up straighter and moved so he was standing in front of where she sat, placing his hands on the counter on either side of her so she was between them before leaning forward and kissing her.

“What other good ways are there then hmm? “ She raised a brow with a smirk as he leaned against the counter next to her. “Who knows….maybe someone has caught my eye”

Shawn looked back at her, “I think the best way to spend a party is to find someone and get a little one on one time” he said with a smirk, “As fun as watching girls pretend to be drunk is, I prefer something a little more private” he said before smiling a little when she said someone might’ve caught her eye. “Oh yeah?” he said before shrugging, “I think someone might’ve caught my eye too”

“That would be a fun pasttime” She agreed with a laugh as she hopped up to sit on the counter behind her. “Pleasure’s all mine Shawn” She nodded once before looking around. “Usually I’m..otherwise occupied. However no one has caught my attention yet tonight” She shrugged

“It’s one good way to spend this party” he said, moving over and leaning up against the counter next to her. He raised his eyebrows a bit at her response, “Is that so?” he said before smiling a little, taking a large sip of his drink. “Night’s still young, I’m sure someone will catch your eye before the end of the party” he said before looking over her- not trying to be subtle about checking her out.

“Here to help everyone live out their partying dreams” She smirked a little before laughing, “Though it’s pretty fun to watch some of the sorority girls act wasted after a cup of that” She nodded to the keg before taking a sip of her punch. “Chiara” She held a hand out to him, “Haven’t seen you around before”

“We shouldn’t tell any of the other girls about the beer and just watch them pretend they’re fucked up” he said with a small laugh before taking her hand as she held it out, “Chiara, it’s good to meet you. I’m Shawn” he smiled, “I’m usually around these types of parties, I’m surprised we haven’t run into each other before”

Trevor cast a glance over the younger male, recognizing him in a instant as his face had been hanging up on a pin board for the last few months as they had been closing up the case of the missing kids. He pursed his lips for a second before he raised both his eyebrows at his hostile tone of voice. He figured he knew who he was, or at least what he did. It wasn’t a big town after all. “My apologies.” He said simply, “I thought you were one of the waiters.” 

Shawn looked back over at him and shook his head, “Aren’t y’all supposed to have good situational awareness? Isn’t half of the job knowing what’s going on around you?” he said in a sarcastic tone. “You must be a shit cop”

Luke was embarrassed but he knew it wasn’t his fault this happened. He caught the towel and wiped his face a bit. “If you know how to fix this thing?” Luke nodded at the fountain. “I don’t even think these come with instruction manuals.” 

Shawn looked over at the fountain before shrugging, “Uhh... can’t say I’ve ever fixed a water fountain before, I don’t think I’ll be much help. I’m more of a sports guy than a handy guy, sorry” he shrugged, looking at the guy. “Maybe you can google one?”

Chiara had been under a lot of stress lately, and the one surefire way for her to unwind was to crash whatever parties were being whispered about amongst the students. Which is exactly how she ended up at some random frat house she’d probably been in before, but didn’t remember clearly–a red solo cup in hand. “Hey…you don’t want to drink that” She shook her head as someone approached the beer keg. “I heard someone mention that they got it for cheap because it’s mixed with water” She made a face and nodded to the punch bowl next to her. “This is probably your better option, at least it’s fresh”

Shawn was out at some frat party his friends told him about, hoping to get drunk as quickly as possible to make the night even worth coming out for. He turned his head when he heard a voice talking to him and smiled a little. “You might’ve just saved my night” he said, grabbing a cup and filling it with the punch from the bowl next to her, taking a sip and looking back at her. “I owe you one...” he paused, at the end of his sentence, waiting for her to say her name since he’d never seen her around before.

Trevor had just finished another long shift and it had gotten to the point where he could not remember the last time he ate. He had made his way to the diner close to the station. He was a sucker for a good, cooked breakfast and he had come to find that this place served one of the better once. He took a seat in one of the boots as his eyes began to scan the menu. When he spotted someone in the corner of his eye, he immediately began placing his order, “I’ll have a full breakfast, extra hash browns and a black coffee, please.” He said before looking up at the person close to him.

Shawn had been out all night, and he had never made it home the night before. He’d crashed on a friends couch because he was too drunk to go home like that- it wasn’t like his mom was going to notice his absence anyway. He was walking through the diner, making his way over to a booth for himself when he was passing the man who started talking to him. He recognized him as one of the cops in the town, which immediately left a bad taste in his mouth. He was already hungover, and this just put him in an even worse mood. “Do I look like I fucking work here?”

Luke had been at the bowling alley for so long he might as well change his last name to Anderson. Fixing the water fountain was supposed to be one of the easy tasks on his to-do list of the day. After messing with a few hoses in the back he thought it was mission accomplished. Cockily going to take a sip he was sloshed in the face with water that did not stop spraying out. “That wasn’t supposed to happen.” He was blinded by the spray, “Can someone hand me a towel or something?” He begged, blindly trying to hold back the aggressive water with his thumb.

Shawn couldn’t hide his laugh when he saw the water spraying in the face of the other man. It was funny, and he wasn’t the type to hide his reaction to things because he thought they would make him look like an asshole. Truthfully, he didn’t really care how he came across. He reached over and grabbed a towel before tossing it over to the guy, “You need help or something dude?”

“Oh, thank you.” Anthony replied before taking the bill from him. He shook his head at the boy’s comment. “No sorry, I guess I was just a bit distracted.” He added knowing that it was a bit of a bad habit for him to do so but that he couldn’t help it. “It seems there are a lot of people here, more than I expected.”

“Right, sure” he said before looking around at the crowd when he said he was surprised there were so many people there. “What were you expecting? It’s Valentine’s day, couples eat that shit up and all of the single people just came here to look for someone to hook up with” he shrugged, “I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire town was out tonight”

Anthony wasn’t sure what had possessed  him to come to the movie tonight. Perhaps it was that he just didn’t want to be home alone, or perhaps it was because he wanted to keep an eye on his sister who he knew was here somewhere. Anthony found himself sitting on a chair and he had zoned out while looking at the crowds of people around that he didn’t notice someone was talking until the end of their sentence. “Sorry, what were you saying?” 

Shawn looked over at him before holding up a 5 dollar bill, “I was telling you that you dropped this” he said, holding it out for him to take. “You high or something?” he asked, since he’d been trying to get his attention for a few seconds before he’d noticed.

“You’re a horrid liar, my friend.” He chuckled softly, before looking down. “There were many reasons I came to Ashton. Change of pace, better care for my mother…but the largest reason was because of what happened before. My wife and I tried many times to have a baby. We were never successful. Either she just didn’t conceive, or she miscarried several months into the pregnancy. But the last one…the last one was successful. At least in the sense that she gave birth to a live baby. But Connor was born with so many issues, the doctors were amazed he wasn’t stillborn. He spent a month in the hospital, and when he came home, they warned us to be cautious. Katherine knew better than to hope. But I was over the moon. In denial, probably. One night, three days after his seven month birthday, we were both in bed, when we heard a shriek. Not of pain, just of…surprise. Gasping for breath. In those ten seconds it took us to run over there, he had already begun to turn blue. I did all I could, but I could not save him. Deep down I know it was doomed from the start. But that was my biggest failure, LaMontagne. I had one job, and that was to protect Connor. And I failed. I’ve always wanted kids….I have to redeem myself, don’t you understand? He may have been past saving, but you, and all the other kids affected by this…you aren’t.” His voice was small, desperate, but resolute.

Shawn stayed quiet as he listened to Vincent talk about what had happened in his own family. He didn’t know what to say, obviously there was no amount of words that could change what happened or make it better. Shawn knew loss, and he knew there wasn’t anything he could say that could help in the situation. “I’m sorry to hear that” he said, simply, and though it may have seemed insensitive to say so little about something so serious, he was just trying to spare Vincent one of the long speeches that people usually gave him about his sister that he hated hearing. “You should focus more on the other kids, you know... They’re the victims in all this, not me. They need the help” he deflected, not feeling like he deserved the help since it was the people he’d loved the most who brought all of this pain to this town.

“Assuming you don’t lose it anyways.” Vince put the lighter back in his pocket. “Your loyalty to your dad is admirable. But I’m not competing with your dad. I don’t feel like going around kidnapping kids….nor do I have the desire to be in the front lines of a battlefield. So, I suppose he’s one-upped me on that.” His words held no judgment, simply observation. “I’m not trying to replace him. All I’m doing is offering my help. You won’t want it, you never will. I’m just here in case the impossible happens. For both our sakes…” 

“I won’t” he said as if he was sure about that, but in reality he wasn’t. “Of course I’m loyal to him, he’s my dad” he said before looking away when he mentioned what his dad had done in this town and his military service. That’s never what he was with Shawn, so it was weird for him to hear that being all that people knew of Josh. “For both of our sakes? What do you gain from this?”

Vincent was silent as the younger man spoke, still fidgeting with the lighter in his hands. Then, he quietly asked a very simple question. “If all that is true, LaMontagne, answer me this. What do you have to lose by letting me in?” 

“My sanity, for starters” he said, scoffing back at him. “I already told you, I didn’t lose my dad. I’m not looking for a new grown man to come into my life and try to look out for me” he shrugged, “Even if you tried, you’d never even be half the man my dad is anyway”

“All I was trying to say is that things have changed, Shawn.” He attempted to explain while the aggitation was still clear im his voice. “I just don’t know if or when there will be any ckming back from that. I have a lot of stuff I am trying to figure out and learning how to live with all thanks to..” He stopped himself. He knew Shawn’s dad wasn’t all at fault. He had had help after all. “It is not an empty threath. I just don’t trust myself right now. That is all.”

“Yeah, I know things have changed. Things changed for me too” he said, often now feeling like he was also a victim of his families actions. Not in the same way Ethan was, of course, but everything they’d done had affected Shawn so greatly. He looked back up with Ethan talked again, ready to get mad when he expected him to say it was all his dad’s fault. To be fair, it pretty much was, but the man was still Shawn’s dad and he loved him. So he didn’t like to hear anything negative about him, even with all of this. “Watch what you say” he said simply, not wanting it to sound like he was defending his family, but he just didn’t want to hear comments about them.

  Ethan swallowed past the lump in his throat while his heart continued to race in his chest. He clenched his jaw while he listened to him speak, digging his nails deeper and deeper into his the palm of his hands before looking away from him again. “I don’t want to hear it Shawn, what about that don’t you get.” He responded, grinding his teeth together. The last thing he wanted to hear was details to what had happened between his once best friend and the girl he had been going out with when he had been taken. “No. I am not going to hit you  again, Shawn.” He spat back at him. He didn’t trust himself at the moment as his feelings were sort of everywhere. He knew one thing thought that hitting Shawn again would solve nothing. 

“Trust me, I was perfectly happy not talking about it but you brought it up and then you tried to make me seem like I was some asshole taking advantage of her so I had to explain my side” he shrugged, “You want to be mad about it? You go right ahead, but be mad at both of us because it was mutual.” he said, feeling like it might’ve been unfair to just be mad at Shawn for it. If he was an asshole for sleeping with his best friends girl, then she was also an asshole for sleeping with her almost-boyfriends best friend. At least that’s how he saw it. “Don’t make empty threats then”

“Fucked in the head? Er…yes. Probably. Most likely. No genius without a bit of madness. But am I truly genius? I don’t know. That’s not for me to decide.” Vince shook his head. “Your mother is still not well, and your father is in prison. No one is looking out for you. And despite your best efforts to provide evidence to the contrary, you are a good kid. Deep down, I mean. On the surface, you’re kind of an asshole. No offense. But there’s a good heart in there. I can tell. I’ve always-” Vince shook his head again. “I don’t have any kids, LaMontagne. Had one, but I fucked that up. Or…fate just wanted otherwise. I’ve got a wife, but she doesn’t love me anymore. Or maybe she does. I don’t know. But you…you’re not in too deep. You can turn that around.” 

“Prison isn’t meant to be fun, I don’t think my dad is having a particularly good time there” he said before looking back over at him. “My mother is fine” he said quickly and defensively, not liking when people knew about his family’s problems, but it was getting increasingly more difficult to keep any of it secret. He let out a small laugh when Vincent said on the outside he was an asshole, it was true after all. “Look man, I don’t know what it is that you think you see in me, but I’m not a good person- I’ve never claimed to be. Ask anyone else in this town and they’ll agree with me.” he shrugged. “No, I’m in deep. Pretty much all of my family is either dead or in jail. Anyone who once was my friend completely hates me now, and I don’t blame them for that, they probably should. The only person left who thinks my life might be worth something is you- and I don’t think you’re mentally stable either so why would I take your word on it?”
