Hi guys, here with a few friendly reminders for browsing the internet and delving into fandoms😊💕. Whether you’re new or old to fan culture, it’s always great to have this reminder! Please come into this with an open mind since I know some of us are hardened from fan culture 😂😊❤️
• There are going to be things you won’t like, don’t waste your energy putting hate comments.
• Along the same lines, if you don’t like something, don’t engage. Fan discourse, drama and even sketchy fan works aren’t worth the emotional energy to try to pick at and correct.
• There’s a certain degree of responsibility in the OG owner of that work to quell certain discourse. AND it’s also up to them to decide how much energy they want to put into correcting the same issues again and again.
• That being said, don’t badger a creator for opinions, responses, or with extreme vitriol. A creator doesn’t owe you any interaction.
• Going back to a similar point as the second point I made, if there is a lack of fanworks of either a ship, a dynamic, sexuality and gender expression, even a kink! If you are unsatisfied with what there is, pick up a pen or pull out a keyboard. We all have screens and there’s plenty of resources that can help with writing and drawing!
• Remember, you can’t force anyone to believe what you believe. If you hate one ship or love another and convinced everyone is wrong about it, it’s time to take a step back. I know saying ‘touch grass’ is used in a humorous way now, but it’s so important to go outside and interact with the real world so you can balance your opinions better.
• This is probably going to sound like therapy speak, but it is in a way since I learned it in therapy😂. There will always be a duality of attitudes, thoughts and opinions in fan spaces. It’s better to accept it and curate your feeds to things you like, rather than hating on it and engaging in other hateful content.
• Bots and trolls aren’t worth your time and energy. If it’s on your fanfics, delete the comments, if it’s on other social media spaces, block or delete, or ignore.
• Take time to refresh and learn online safety. Many kids and teen in recent years don’t even know proper precautions and as adults in fan spaces, we can do a few things.
• If you are an adult who interacts/posts NSFW, be aware of minors by making it clear that they aren’t allowed and that some consequences will follow(like being blocked and deleted).
• With that, it also isn’t online adults responsibilities to parent the younger fans. Only do what you can on your end.
• If you ARE an adult who interacts with minors in SFW spaces, be mindful and careful of boundaries. Have your back covered and then you can make sure that the spaces they’re in are safe spaces.
