Once I was a Genius

I was a genius once! Through the stacks of old poetry I found the thoughts I had thought Written as a joke! As a JOKE! But as I read through them I knew myself In a way that I had been searching for Because I was funny But also authentic In that the things I wrote To make myself laugh Still make myself laugh And in these old words I can find the parts of me That I still treasure Because they are the utterly absurd The strange parts I became unafraid to share And then strident in my performance Like sneaking a little reading To let an audience in My Friends! They knew me and know me And now I can know me too
