We finally found out where SDARL Class IX will be traveling in February! I am so excited for an opportunity to travel to India and experience what agriculture looks like there. I can't think of a better group of people to travel with. Thanks for another great week, gang! 😃 ✈️ 🕌 🇮🇳 #sdarl #agleaders #travelIndia #countdownbegins
#humpday #reminder 🙌🏼
I had another great week studying leadership and learning more about South Dakota with SDARL Class IX! We covered the management of Custer State Park and our National Forest. We spent some time learning about ranching in The Badlands and even got to tour the Sanford Underground Research Lab facility. I can't wait to see everyone again in July! 😬😬 #SDARL #ClassIX #CusterStatePark #BlackHills #hifromSD #agleaders
Feels like spring. Feels like Friday. ☀️🐮😎🙌🏼 #spring2017 #greengrass #hifromsd #eatbeef #joblove #tgifriday
I made it home safe and sound after a great week in Washington D.C. with my SDARL classmates! It was an amazing learning experience and opportunity to advocate for South Dakota agriculture #SDARL #agleadership #agproud #hifromsd #washingtondc
SDARL Pierre was a success! I had a great week with Class IX. We got to hear from several of our state's top officials about agriculture in South Dakota during the 2017 Legislative Session. Next stop: Washington D.C. ✈️ #SDARL #ClassIX #agleaders
It was warm enough and I had enough light to run outside with Rugar tonight. Here is to hoping spring is right around the corner! 😂 #wishfulthinking #runningbuddy #runinred #hifromsd
This is pretty interesting and worth the time to listen...I can't help but wonder if Millennials raised on farms and ranches have the same "hand dealt" to them as the majority of the millennial population? Even though I can relate to some of the qualities he describes, I would like to think "kids" with an agricultural background maybe have an edge on understanding work and relationship values. Being raised on operations that took generations of hard work to build paints a picture of the time it can take to achieve the big goals. Different industries in agriculture also tend to have seemingly small circles where everyone knows everyone. It is much easier to understand the value of relationships and those connections when you've grown up around them and work in them every day. We might be a small percent of our population, but I think understanding and growing these values will create a lot of opportunities for millennials in Agricultural (or other) careers.
My lone new year resolution
This is the time of year for resolutions. Many people see the start of a new year as the perfect time to create new beginnings in their own lives. Perhaps the beginning of January is the most hopeful time of the year.
People will resolve to lose weight and become healthier.
People will resolve to go back to school or find new career challenges.
People will resolve to save more money and spend their money wisely.
Those are all good goals and we’d be wise to incorporate them into our own lives. But while I admire those resolutions, I have a different one for myself this year. In fact, I only have one new year resolution and truly believe I only need one.
I resolve to have a better attitude this year. I believe my attitude is what will help me achieve goals like better health, new opportunities and financial stability. The longer I live, the more I realize I control very little in my life. But rather than feel powerless and hopeless, I use the lack of control of my circumstances to sharpen my focus on the one thing in my life I do control–my attitude.
So what makes a good attitude? Waking up everyday like it’s January 1! That means sustaining your hope throughout the year. That means finding the silver lining in every dark cloud that fills your sky throughout the year–no matter how hard you have to strain your eyes to see that silver lining. That means dedicating each day to being a better person than you were the day before, even if you only manage to make yourself a tiny bit better that day. (Being a tiny bit better than you were yesterday is still better, which is a step in the right direction.)
We can tell a good attitude more from what it’s not than what it is. It means trying to slump your shoulders less. It means reducing your heavy sighs. It means relieving yourself of the burden of being perfect. It means never moving backward, no matter how much you’d like to retreat to a shelter from life’s storms. It means living life on your own terms, even when life seems to be conspiring against you.
If you want to know if 2017 will be a good year for you, ask yourself if your attitude will allow you to have a good year. That means making the most of what life gives you and not playing the loser’s game of constantly desiring better circumstances to transform your world. If you have a bad attitude, there are no circumstances that can save you from your misery. If you have a good attitude, there are no circumstances that can stop you from being the very best person you can possibly be.
This year I will try. I will fail. I will come short of my own expectations. I will be tested by circumstances. I will be tempted to quit. But each time I fall, I will get back up. I may not run fast to achieve my personal goals, but I will always be progressing closer to them. I may not soar through the air like an eagle, but I will flow like a tiny brook of fresh water–gently but steadfastly moving around, over or through the difficult circumstances in my way.
My improving attitude will make this the best year of my life.
