This is my daughter’s creative work. When she studies, she draws. It seems to ground her, giving her space in her head to gather her thoughts. I also think she is quite talented. I am so pleased that she has found her way to learn.
I don’t draw, or doodle, or sketch. I don’t feel that it would help me to concentrate at all.
We are all unique and learn in different ways.
Study sometimes takes me to amazing places where I am learning new ideas and growth mg excited to see how I will put them into practice. Not today. Today study is taking me to a dark place. A place where I am alone, listening to the laughter of my family outside, but unable to be with them. I am unable to see the other side of the darkness. I want someone to reach out, take me away..... but I sit here alone.
when i’m depressed, i tend to forget things. like the times i hugged someone and they hugged back tighter, the times i couldn’t stop laughing and smiling from ear to ear. the thoughtful compliments i received, the genuine looks of surprise and joy i helped put on someone’s face, and the days where nothing important really happened, but i felt happy. but forgetting these things doesn’t mean they never happened. they existed once, and they’re proof that even though i haven’t felt myself for a while, some days in my life can be pretty nice, and there will be more days like that in the future.
Today, I study by the pool. Why? Because I can. Lockdown means I can’t work, no live lectures or library trips either. So today, this is where you will find me.
Lockdown sucks... but at least I have a beautiful space to be.
My studies in connected learning environments had brought me here... research into the use of Twitter in educational settings.
I don’t even have Twitter yet. So help me out. Who should I be following for some great education debates.
This week I will be working full time. I am early childhood trained yet teaching middle school classes. Yes it’s a challenge, but I really do enjoy it.
Working in schools keeps my knowledge current. I am able to attend PD, observe more experienced teachers, and engage in real world classroom procedures.
Casual relief teaching exposes me to opportunities to put my study into practice while also maintaining some forms of home, work and study life balances.
Today I took a break from study to embrace another passion of mine. Bush Kinder. Also know as Forest Schooling. I met up with educators from my previous workplace to share my knowledge and set them off on their journey. We explored 2 hours of uninterrupted, child led play in an open eucalyptus wetland. We set off on a 15 min walk with over 20 little cherubs, which included some road crossings and safety lessons. We had a picnic morning tea as we discussed the rules and boundaries needed for safe play. We dug in the mud, danced in the rain, climbed trees, chased our peers, enjoyed some rough and tumble play, collected sticks, and searched for bugs. We ended our morning with a ‘didirri’ which is an Indigenous word meaning deep inner listening. We use this time to encourage the children to listen to the sounds of nature, blocking out the man made noises they are so used to hearing.
My notes are not pretty, colour coded, or even all that neat. But that’s not why I take notes. I need to take notes to learn. As I read I highlight what stands out to me; the things I feel are important. Then I write them all down. Writing helps me commit these thoughts to memory. Without this strategy, I could find myself lost in my readings. At the end of the chapter I may not be able to recall anything I have read.
What learning strategies work best for you?
A clear and organised desktop to begin the semester. Starting the semester right.
I’m Shelly, mum, teacher and student all in one! I have just embarked on a journey to explore connected learning environments as part of my Masters of Educational Leadership and Management. Todays job was to prepare my study environment so next week I am ready to hit the ground running...
