Shelter Love

Shelter love is a blog dedicated to the animals I visit at my local animal shelter. The purpose here is not only to give them exposure, but to show everyone how beautiful shelter animals are. They are not damaged or bad - they are loving and forgiving and are looking for their second chance.

TO BE DESTROYED 03/02/17 A volunteer writes: Oscar’s no grouch and this crop-eared cutie had me wrapped around his little paw from the moment we met. Full of the curious playfulness of puppyhood and all the trusting loyalty of a well-socialized pet, he’s keen to explore and to love on his people and makes for the most wonderful sharing-is-caring partner when it comes to games of fetch or tug. A cinch to leash, seemingly house trained and a breeze to walk (though he does literally stick to my side at times), Oscar meets other pups with friendly good manners no matter what their size. Toys, snacks and snuggles (in that order) are the things that make his world go round and when he offers up a pleading head-tilt it’s impossible not to shower him with treats and praise. Active and athletic yet easy to handle and even easier to love, Oscar is going to make his new family very happy. Set up a playdate with Oscar the Great today, he can’t wait to meet you! Another volunteer writes: Got lap? You need Oscar!! Adorably snuggly in his brindlicious, gleaming coat, his tail never stops wagging, he wants to be as close as possible to his person, and when he gets a bit mouthy because he’s so excited to make a new friend, all is forgiven as he wiggles and waggles his way into my heart. Oscar sits when asked, loves treats, does that head tilt thing I love. He seems younger than his estimated age of 2yo and is looking for a loving person or family to provide structure, positive reinforcement training (easy because he loves treats), and a lifetime of love. Got lap? Get Oscar!

I heard an inspiring story about this beautiful husky with a mohawk. When he first came into the care of people who actually loved and cared for him, he was full of puncture wounds. At first, they believed it could have been from a gun. However, after he was brought to his rescuers home for the first time, it was apparent something else was likely the case. When he arrived and was greeted by her other dogs he was absolutely terrified. In addition to the puncture wounds, his tail was missing. The new belief was he was possibly a survivor of being a bait dog.

His incredible fear for other dogs went away as he was shown love and kindness. When I met him at A Day of Hope and Help for the Mill Dogs, I would have never imagined he had gone through such a traumatic experience early in his life. He was relaxed and loved attention from everyone. I learned all of this after I asked, “Is there a story behind his tail?”

I think he shows a good example of the spirit of dogs. How they can bounce back with affection and patience. How they can bloom into something incredible no matter their history.

Let him be an inspiration for people to get out and ADOPT a pet. Yes, they can have rough histories. Yes, they can come with some problems. But what’s waiting on the other side, well that is incredibly beautiful and worth the time spent nourishing their souls.

Hailey is an adorable little senior Pomeranian. Did you know senior pets are often the last to get adopted? Did you know they are just as awesome as the younger pets? As you can see, Hailey is a beautiful baby despite her age - and she’s a total sweetheart on top of it. In addition to her age, Hailey is a puppy mill survivor - but you’d never know it. I met her at A Day of Hope and Help for the Mill Dogs, quite a lengthy event, and she was greeting people like they were all her friends all day!

Silly, fun Duke is available for adoption through Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center - I’m not sure how this happy guy hasn’t found a home yet!

From Old Friend Senior Dog Sanctuary:

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR… WE NEED YOUR HELP! On August 19, the county zoning board, fueled by a few neighbors who think that OFSDS has grown too large for the neighborhood, gave us 60 days to move Sanctuary Dogs and operations.

The change will be positive. We are currently trying to work through a lease and also looking at other options that are more public than we are now. This will allow growth with the ability for more volunteers, supporters and potential forever families to visit. The time crunch, however, is not good and we will have to come up with a solution soon to avoid fines and legal penalties. We have promised our Old Friends that we will care for them for the rest of their lives and we will NEVER go back on that promise. 

We don’t often ask for donations, but moving will be expensive and now is a special time for us. If you are able to donate to our Moving Fund, no matter how much, please go to http://oldfriendsseniordogs.com/donate.html to donate by credit card, PayPal or check. 

Ultimately, this will be a GREAT move for OFSDS, we just have to get through this transitional stage. We will come out STRONGER and BETTER and in a position to help more Old Friends on the other side.

Such an inspiration to everyone involved in rescue! Today, I met one of the dogs I photographed 4 years ago at a local shelter. I saw her smiling face and instantly recognized her (she is such a memorable cutie!)

This is Katarina. Her days are now filled with cuddling, playing, and going for walks. She is very loved in her new home. As you can see, she’s happy as can be!

More rescue ambassadors! :) A couple of beautiful Dobermans. How could anyone resist those beautiful, smiling faces?! Neither are for adoption as they already have loving homes. However, they attend events to encourage people to adopt!

Harley is such a handsome boy! All dressed up.

Harley has had many people interested in adopting him already, so he will find a home soon if he hasn’t already! I will be continuing to post photos of him here and there, as he still wants to give shout outs to all the adoptable horses out there! There are many, many in need of loving homes - and as you can see, many are still able to do plenty for you! Even if they can’t physically, having a gentle, older horse can certainly help your soul.

Have a happy Thursday - looking forward to posting more again. Been busy - but a good kind of busy! :)

Hold On to Chynna Phillips! Chynna is a four-month-old, 20-pound (currently) Bassett Hound mix and she is so unbelievably delicious and snuggly. She loves kids, other dogs, and cats! In addition to being an excellent dancer due to her stint on Dancing with the Stars, Chynna’s also quite the looker. She has the cutest freckled tummy and legs, as well as markings that make her look like she’s wearing a raccoon mask. So, Could you be her Mama or Papa?
