               RELATIONSHIPS: Deirdre & Her Parents

Deirdre and her parents appear on the surface level to be close. Those who aren’t close to her or know a lot about her would assume they live the typical rich kid’s life. She is handed everything on a silver platter however this is very much the opposite. Deirdre has had to earn everything that is in her life and fight to even get the things she has now. Not to mention the moment that Nancy began to get into her studies and reach the same level that Dee was on with academics as children her parents put so much pressure on her to be better and compete with Nancy rather than nurture their friendship. This led to Dee snapping and eventually pretty aggressively ending her friendship with Nancy. Her retaliation came in high school which was a part of the large parties she threw while her parents traveled for work and intentionally making poor choices in boyfriends which contributes to her failure to truly feel loved in relationships in any form or capacity. On top of this affection physically was denied to Deirdre growing up which is why she is prone to constantly having her own hand on her arms or physically holding herself. Deirdre never really got the ability to express her feelings in front of her parents which led to it all folding in on herself internally and holding herself is a coping mechanism for dealing with that. Her attitude is largely impacted by this as well because she has internalized and shoved a lot of her emotions down and hidden them and they tend to just simmer at the surface and is why she tends to be more tense, aggressive and a bit testy.

As she got older and the more successful Nancy got, her parents knowing Dee shared the same interests and wanted to do something similar began to also hold this over her head. Often times if she failed at something or got shot down in a course she was told that The Drew girl would have done it better, The Drew girl did this and you can’t even pass a class, The Drew girl would have had this done by now, Why can’t you be more like that Drew girl. It escalated more from academics to her personality, to her attitude, to deciding to go into criminology to her choices in friends and boys. Everything Deirdre did was held up to a microscope by her parents and picked apart and then compared to Nancy. This fostered hate for Nancy, Dee doesn’t hate Nancy because she has done something cruel or wrong to her. Deirdre hates Nancy because of her parents created a standard she could never reach and used Nancy as that standard. Her parents have never said they are proud of her, and I love you’s are hard to remember outside of when she was about 7 or 8. Because of this Dee struggles to hold platonic relationships and even more so connect emotionally into romantic relationships she has had in the past.

Her parents essentially have caused her to emotionally repress herself, ruined her ability to understand a normal functioning relationship platonic or romantic and essentially destroyed a friendship that would have bee the baseline and strongest one in her life because of their inability to let Deirdre be herself. This has carried over into a lot of anger and struggles in self-expression but most heavily impacted Deirdre’s self-esteem so much that she overcompensates for it and often people misread her confidence for arrogance. In reality, this arrogance is an overcorrection to try and please her parents but even then it fails. Deirdre struggles to really do anything for herself and often times mixes up what she wants with what they want. Her ambition and her life are clouded and her whole existence is taken over by them and what they want and sometimes Deirdre isn’t sure if she is living her life for her or living her life for them which causes a total shut down on her part. This often is apart of the 90 day friend trial period as well. Overall she has had nothing but a negative experience and struggle in her life because of her parents and they have caused her to have a lot of issues in which she can not function properly with any sort of relationship, her self expression or self-esteem. Dee tries to work on this following MID but still struggles to acknowledge and accept everything that they have done to her.

However all of that could wait, everything in the world could wait for one Ned Nickerson. Poor fool was simply head over heels for someone that didn’t deserve him and it broke poor Deirdre’s heart. Oh darkness is a look she wears well, as if it were a crown to be won and she was the only one to know how to play the game. If she wanted she could trick Bess, but there wasn’t much fun in that after the first time she did it when Nancy was in the clink ages ago. She’s not sure why, but once again the Marvin girl is set to keep her eyes on Dee. This time in a farther away place where they all conveniently happened to be. ❝You know, you could just come and sit here.
