Smile! Sherlock S1–S4

In response to a recent ask, I started looking more closely at the 221B smileys. This post compares the smiley between episodes and looks at how it changes (or doesn’t) over time. To do that, I’ve taken the clearest screenshot of the smiley I could for each episode, and then produced images that frame the smiley in exactly the same way, so that differences are made clearer.

The only editing I’ve done is to slightly straighten a couple of the images so that the smiley can always be viewed head on; the colours and lighting are exactly as seen in the show. I will start by saying that I don’t think colour or opacity matters; it’s so easy to create different looks by altering lighting/angle/focus/post-processing etc. that I think they haven’t bothered playing with this. This especially obvious in S4, when the colours have been drastically enhanced everywhere; these changes are not specifically about the smiley. A number of things have changed, though, and we’ve largely… not noticed.

I was about to post something on this very topic, but damn! This is perfect! The smiley HIDES behind the wallpaper after TSOT. Like it’s been sprayed from the OTHER side. (Breaking the 4th wall - the wall we’re looking in on the room from) Spraypaint would show OVER the black print, if the paint was really from this side. It spreads on the underside.
