giselle — dutch national ballet
romeo & juliet ~ 1968
Giselle is based on the myth of the Wilis. The Wilis are ghost brides, thought to be abandoned by their lovers at the alter, therefore dying of a broken heart. The Wilis are rooted in Slavic folklore, and similar spirits even appear in Polish literature, including the works of poet Adam Mickiewicz.
The leader of the Wilis is called Myrtha, she commands the army of ghost girls to lure men into the woods and force them to dance to their deaths as revenge.
