Graduation Thoughts... (Poem)
Looking ahead, then looking back, looking ahead because looking back
Seems to be too much at times, hard to see what’s up as I
Keep looking ahead because I don’t want to look at myself
Back, in the same situations which were supposed to be at my back
Back to the topic, mama always used to say the key was college
But couldn’t tell me where the door was, if it was open or if it was locked
Locked into that mentality because she had taken a couple classes and dropped out
Word to Kanye, so every time I would hear my mom say
Look ahead, don’t look back and wish you would’ve used your head
I tried to listen, take her advice but I advise you that’s easier said,
Than done, cause I’m not sure if this is even the door for me
Especially cause no ones able to say exactly where I’ll be
I mean that degree and it’s about 400 of those you can earn and still not make any paper,
That’s 400 degrees of fucked up and just my tough luck
The closer I got to getting that degree the more clearly I could see it didn’t really resemble my dream
I tried to reassemble my thoughts and figure out if this is the price
You have to pay for happiness, OR complacency
I can’t say this is the place to be but I do thank God for placing me in a place with a different pace than my hometown, I’m grown now
And as I look back, some people didn’t look ahead
Some people from high school
Didn’t have anything outside of the city in their head, they weren’t prepared and those were the honor roll students, not even the ones who got high in school
Matter of fact, I’m learning shits rarely a matter of facts
Cause what you know changes, but through break ups and make ups, caked up pounds of make-up and any facts made up
Who we know stays the same
Cause we all can look back and be shook at words we should’ve took back cause we find ourselves forced to look
A few faces we wish left and a few we wish remained
As I think about how I’m gonna remain in debt it’s like,
Sallie Mae is a nympho who keeps fuckin me saying the best aint came yet
Looking back, mama also said I should’ve just waited til marriage
But Sallie, said she was thinking of my best Said she wanted to invest
So I took of my vest and ended up in her dress
And four years later I’m getting letters telling me its over, but she still has interest
And that shit got me a little depressed
Done with the puns but it was one hell of a ride
Even though I thought my fam would kill me once I lost my LIFE,
That they aint sacrifice for nothing it’s the least that I owe em
