Hi! We're so glad to hear that you are starting up a Quidditch team. We can honestly say that high school Quidditch has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives. We started our team by seeking out people we knew, who we thought might be interested. We got a list of 10 people, none of who stayed with the team until the end of the year. It's really important to not get discouraged when people leave, and to keep recruiting. Relentlessly. Like, email, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, posters around your school, announcements, everything. Recruit, recruit, recruit. It is also important to have a core group of people (for example, we had 4 seniors in our tournament team who we could always count on, even when other people were inconsistant.) Secondly, fundraise. We held weekly bake sales, and next year we are planning on doing car washes. You're going to need money for brooms, hoops, balls, uniforms, head bands, etc. However important money is, don't underestimate the power of homemade equipment. Some of our guys built three hoops for us, and they worked fantastically. Third, reach out to other teams (which you've already started on). One of the biggest things for us was practicing with the Swarthmore college team. Do you know of any local college/high school teams in your are? Where are you from, maybe we're close. :) Most importantly, don't lose hope. Starting up a team is a challenging, but worthwhile experience. Trust us, it will be really difficult at times. There was a point in the year where we felt like throwing in the towel and giving up until the following year. But we didn't, and because of that we ending up taking third place at a tournament that was incredibly rewarding, and fun. Keep in touch, we would love to help you in any way that we can!
