The Gingerbread House in Mt Baldy, California
Submitted by Mariah Jochai / @mariah_gr
Construction of this cabin began in 1934 by George Kayser, a Hollywood set designer. Shortly after finishing the shell of the structure, he abandoned the project and the cabin sat in neglect for nearly 30 years.
In 1975 my parents purchased the cabin from Kayser’s widow and re-built it over 4 years. All of the interior woodwork was done by my dad, Daven, and much of the wood was salvaged from local barns and grove houses. Remnant walls of another structure on the property were re-faced in stone by my dad to create an outdoor gathering space.
Mariah has published a book chronicling her father’s life as a stonemason. Available at: gingerbreadhousebook.com
