Queen Zelda begins to act oddly towards Link and he scrambles to find out what's going on.
WARNING : MENTION OF MISCARRIAGE
Read on AO3 here
King Consort Link of Hyrule was in a conundrum.
His wife, Queen Zelda, had been acting coldly towards him. It had all begun on an innocuous Tuesday, the weather beginning to cool as Fall was close. The two had gone to bed fine the night before, staying up to do some reading before falling asleep. When Link awoke, Zelda had moved away from his chest and was curled up on her side of the bed. He stretched, letting out a yawn as he felt his joints pop. When she didnât respond, he figured he would get up first to check on their son, Prince Griffin.
Link had been careful when he slid out of bed, making sure to remain quiet as he crept towards their sonâs room. When he opened the door, he found their son already sitting up, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
âPapa,â he called out, voice still thick with sleep.
âHey there, champ.â
Griffin looked up at him with happy eyes, his free hand reaching out for his Father. Link picked him up, pressing a kiss into hair that was the same color as his own. His chubby hands held onto his arms tightly, relishing in the feeling of his Father pressed against him. When he pulled back, he cocked his head to the side.
âIs Momma still asleep?â
Link put him down, rubbing the top of his head.
âYeah, sheâs still sleeping. Come, letâs go find Miss Mila.â
Griffin slid his hand into Linkâs and the two quietly padded out. Zelda was still asleep and remained so as they made their way into the front room. Their family handmaiden, Mila, was setting up for the day, pulling aside the curtains and sweeping the ashes left in the fireplace. When she turned to face them, her face lit up at the sight of the young Prince.
âWell, look whoâs finally awake!â
She squealed as he ran to her, gripping her legs affectionately. When she picked him up, she sniffed him and pretended that he smelled foul.
âPeeyuw! You are a stinky little boy!â
âNo Iâm not!â Griffin objected.
âI think someone needs a bath. Today we are going to explore the Castle.â
Griffin was too young for formal lessons, as decided by Link and Zelda, so Mila spent his day exploring and having fun. They had been spending time in the gardens and grounds, with a few trips into Castle Town proper. But, as he got closer to school age, his knowledge of the Castle would be important.
âCan we start in the kitchen?â
She laughed, ruffling his hair and heading towards the bathroom.
âWhatever you want, my love.â
Before they slipped out, she turned her head to look over at Link.
âI prepared your clothing for today. Itâs hanging behind the privacy screen.â
âThank you, Mila,â Link said.
Zelda had woken up when he returned to their bedroom. He bit back a laugh at how similar her face was to Griffinâs minutes before, rubbing the last of sleep from her eyes. Upon seeing Link, her face didnât brighten like it normally did. Instead, it remained a cold facade of indifference.
âGood morning, my love,â he greeted her. âHow did you sleep?â
âDid Mila bring breakfast?â
He blinked, startled at the sharpness in her tone.
âEr, no. But she did prepare our clothing for the day.â
She slipped out of bed, walking past him towards the front room.
âIâll see you downstairs.â
Link stood frozen, wondering if he should go after her. His mind began to wrack through the previous day, replaying his words to her and how he had acted. Nothing of note instantly stood out, which made him panic more.
âWhat did I do?â he muttered to himself.
***
Zelda continued to shut him out during the rest of the day. When he came down to breakfast, she didnât look up at his presence like she normally did. She was having an intense conversation with Shikari, who was content to babble on endlessly. When he reached out to brush her hand, she subtly pulled hers away. His schedule had him remaining in the Castle today, so he offered to walk her to the Council room.
âShikari will walk me,â she said, dismissing Link.
When he broke for lunch, he was informed that Zelda was taking it in her own office and had requested not to be disturbed. He decided to go look for Griffin instead and found him wandering the Dining Hall, waving to servants and asking to sit at the head of the table. They ate together, with Link asking his son what he had seen so far.
As time passed and got closer to dinner, he hoped he would actually see his wife. His day had wrapped early, so he had a chance to go looking for her. He was walking down the hallway towards her office when he saw Ezlo rushing towards him.
âIn Nayruâs name, what did you do?!â
Link blinked, staring at the Lord President with a confused expression.
âI-Iâm sorry?â
âYour wife is in a horrid mood,â he hissed. âShe was absolutely tyrannical during our Council meeting today!â
Link hesitated, trying not to squirm under the otherâs eye.
âEr, I have been wondering the same thing myself.â
Ezlo sighed, reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose.
âI tried to speak to her and she dismissed me. She has locked herself in her office and refuses anyone besides the servants.â
Link crossed his arms over his chest, letting out a long breath.
âI went through everything I said or did yesterday and nothing stood out. Itâs as if she, quite literally, woke up on the wrong side of the bed.â
A thought seemed to occur as Ezloâs eyes went wide.
âCome with me to my office.â
As soon as they were in, Ezlo was quick to lock the door.
âHave you two been . . . still trying to have another child?â
Linkâs cheeks burned. The two had agreed to start trying for another child, and their nights had been very . . . busy.
âEr, y-yes. Why is that any of your concern?â
âWell, itâs been a while since she informed me of her want of another child. Perhaps she is feeling . . . discouraged?â
The two had acknowledged that it would probably take a while before Zelda became pregnant, as the first time had been unintentional. They both knew putting pressure would make it more difficult, so they never talked about the âresults,â so to say.
âWe discussed that it may take a while for her to become . . . with child,â Link stammered.
âAh, so itâs not that.â
Ezlo raised an inquisitive eyebrow, which caused Link to panic.
âHave you been doing a good job, my boy?â
âEzlo!â
He held his hands up.
âI have to consider all options, Your Majesty. My apologies.â
Link collapsed into one of the chairs in front of his desk.
âWe rarely fight, and if we do itâs more of a small argument and we resolve it quickly. I am trying not to look too deep into her behavior, but itâs troubling.â
A long silence stretched between them. Ezlo broke it, walking over to stand in front of Link. He placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
âIt will be alright. She is madly in love with you. Perhaps she is stressed and does not want to worry you.â
âI hope so,â Link replied. âI really do.â
âWhy donât you take your dinner in your quarters? Spend some time with Griffin, ey?â
Ezlo assured him he would take care of the dinner change and ushered him out. There was still time until dinner, so he decided to go find his son and take him for a ride on Epona in Hyrule Field.
***
Zelda came to bed a little before midnight. Griffin had fallen asleep not long after dinner, the excitement from his ride with Epona leading to an epic crash. Link had gotten through two pages of his bedtime story before he heard the familiar soft snoring. He had decided to wait up for his wife and see if the two could have a conversation.
However, he hadnât expected her to arrive so late. He had resumed his reading from the night before but dozed off, the book falling onto his lap. The sound of the door opening gently pulled him from sleep, eyes focusing on the figure moving slowly towards their bed. Zelda had changed into her nightgown, her long hair braided as she slid in beside him.
âYou worked late, my love,â he said, voice husky.
âI had a lot of work to do.â
She tried to grab the blanket but Link stopped her. Her eyes didnât meet his but he continued to talk anyway.
âHave I done something to offend you?â
The long pause that followed had fear rising in him. By the Great Three above, he had done something wrong! He quickly ran back through the previous week, but continued to turn up nothing.
âZelda, if I have, please tell me so I can fix it.â
âIâm tired. I want to sleep.â
She didnât wait for a response and turned over, her back towards him. His heart sank in his chest as he studied her before he lay down himself and tried to sleep.
***
When he awoke the next morning, Zelda was not beside him. He glanced towards Griffinâs door and found it still closed, which meant she was elsewhere. Had she gotten up early to work? He frowned, getting up and heading to their sonâs room to wake him up.
Mila seemed skittish when he walked into the front room. The smile she graced them with seemed forced, but she made sure to be as genuine as possible with Griffin. She was about to leave when Link stopped her.
âHave you seen Zelda?â
âNope!â
Her response was quick and her departure even quicker. She was hiding something, but Link knew it was futile to corner her. As he returned to his room to dress, he began forming a plan.
***
Once a month, Link dedicated himself to training the soldiers stationed at the Castle personally. He drilled them in swordplay and archery, teaching them the basics that Rusl had taught him but also the ones he had learned from his ancestor. Perfection was expected, as the Castle had already been attacked twice before. It was known throughout the staff that he was not to be disturbed that day, and his schedule was cleared to make sure he was able to do so.
However, this month, Link had a trick up his sleeve. He had befriended many of the soldiers, especially the younger ones who reminded him much of himself. One in particular had stood out, a youth who had been raised in Castle Town but who came from nothing. Kilien always worked harder than the others, with the goal of becoming part of the elite Royal Guard. Another thing that Link had noticed was that he was sweet on Mila, and the two had struck up a secret relationship. The only reason he had found out was because he had stumbled upon them after overseeing practice casually. He hadnât been spotted but he had shelved the information away for later use.
Now was that moment.
Link worked the soldiers until noon, breaking for lunch and instructing them to return at one sharp. Kilien had lingered, something he always did so he could talk to the King Consort. Upon seeing Link approach, he sunk into a deep, respectful bow.
âYour Majesty. It is always a pleasure to be trained by the great Hero of Twilight.â
Heat flooded his cheeks. It was rare that his pre-royal title was used, and it felt strange to hear. He instructed Kilien to stand, giving him a gentle smile.
âYou are too kind. Come, would you like to dine with me today?â
The youthâs eyes went wide.
âI-I couldnât possibly intrude, Your Majesty.â
âNonsense!â Link clapped a hand on his shoulder. âPlease, join me.â
The two made their way to the Dining Hall, where a plate of warm food was quickly served in front of them. The soldiers generally ate in their own barracks, with simple meals prepared for them. The awe on Kilienâs face signaled to Link that this was quite possibly the nicest meal he had ever had.
âTell me, how is Mila?â
Link had to hold back a smirk when Kilien coughed on his first bite of food. His cheeks were bright red as he looked up with a withering look.
âAh, you are . . . aware. I-Iâm sorry, I understand fraternizing with the Castle staff is -â
âOh, no, it is not a problem at all!â Link laughed. âIâm aware many servants are fraternizing.â
He waited a moment before speaking again.
âShe was acting quite strange this morning. Normally she is quite bright and chipper, but it appeared as if she was hiding something.â
Kilien let out a long sigh, and Link realized he had hit the jackpot.
âCan I . . . be honest with you, Your Majesty?â
âPlease do. I understand where you are coming from.â
The young soldier looked around, as if afraid his lover would appear out of nowhere.
âShe has been under immense stress lately. It seems Her Majesty is rather . . . short.â
Link waited, keeping his face impassive to encourage the other to keep talking.
âI-I donât feel right speaking with you about this . . .â
âWell, no one else is. You are my only option, Kilien.â
He nodded, reaching for his goblet and taking a long sip.
âI understand you two have been trying for another child.â
Oh by the Great Three, what had Mila told him?!
âThat is correct, and I would appreciate it if you kept that to yourself.â
âBut of course!â Kilienâs eyes went wide. âWhat the two of us discuss stays between us.â
Link vaguely wondered what Mila spoke of the couple, but pushed the thought aside.
âShe suspects that Her Majesty may be with child.â
A vague ringing began in Linkâs ears. He tried to recall how Zelda had been during her first pregnancy, but it was clouded by the takeover by Vaati. The memory had him bristling and he had to take a deep breath to steady himself.
âWell, that might explain a lot.â
***
Link was exhausted by the end of the day and was ready for a hot bath and to fall into bed. He had thoroughly enjoyed the remainder of his lunch with Kilien and made a mental note to get to know him more. When he entered his bedroom, towel hung low on his waist, he was surprised to see Zelda sitting in their bed. Her eyes widened slightly at the sight of him nearly naked but quickly settled back to its normal state.
âOh,â he blinked. âI didnât think you would be in bed so soon.â
She hesitated before speaking.
âI had an early start. I wanted to get to bed early.â
Her eyes traced over his body again, sending confidence through his body. He tried to act indifferent as he walked to their bed, stopping at the foot of it.
âDid you have a good day, my love?â
She blinked, eyes fixated on his bare chest and abs before looking up.
âEr, it was fine. Nothing of note.â
Zelda shifted in the bed.
âHow did training go?â
His eyes flickered over to Griffinâs door.
âHe is asleep. I read him a story about an hour ago.â
âIs it that late?â he asked.
He turned around towards his wardrobe, untying the towel so he could get dressed. When he turned back around, dressed in a low slung pair of sleep pants, Zelda was now standing. He opened his mouth to question her but she was quickly on him, kissing him urgently.
âIâm sorry,â she whispered.
His hand reached up to cup her face, stroking her cheek gently.
âItâs alright, my love. Come, letâs talk about it.â
The two crawled into bed, settling on their respective sides. Link lifted his arm so she could curl against his side, which he did. His hand settled on her shoulder, stroking the bare skin there as he waited for her to speak.
âI need to tell you something, and Iâm afraid of what youâll say.â
âYou know you can always tell me anything, Zel.â
She bit her lip, and he noticed it was slightly trembling.
âHey.â
He sat up straight, gently grabbing her chin so she could look directly at him.
âYou can tell me, Zel.â
The sigh she let out had him worried.
âI . . . am with child.â
âThatâs great!â
She shook her head, pulling back so she could press her face against his shoulder.
âI have been with child before, but I lost them.â
The blood in his body went cold. While he knew miscarriage was a possibility, it had never occurred to him that it could happen to his wife. She was protected by Nayru - didnât that mean she was immune to everything? His mind was racing, and it took him a moment too long to realize that his silence was affecting Zelda.
âZel, why didnât you tell me?â
Silent tears began to pour down her face.
âI was worried you would be disappointed in me.â
âDisappointed? You donât have any control over that, my love.â
He pulled her into a tight hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
âHey, itâs okay. I would never be disappointed in you.â
The way her fingers dug into his skin broke his heart. He knew now why she had been isolating herself, why she had been so distant for the past few days. When he pulled back, her face was flushed and tear-streaked.
âHave you talked to the Royal Doctor?â
She nodded.
âYes, he confirmed the pregnancy last week. He has been watching me carefully, and he is confident that this time all will be well.â
Her hand reached down to her belly absently.
âI want to believe him, but it is incredibly difficult.â
Link reached down to place his hand over hers. To the naked eye, there was no sign that she was pregnant. But he could feel it, the subtle raise of her skin and the hard bump underneath. Something in him was trying to speak to him, but he couldnât understand it.
âLink!â
Zeldaâs gasp had him jumping. He looked down to see that their Triforces were glowing. When they pulled their hands away from her belly, the light faded. The two exchanged a look, and they realized that the Goddesses had given them their sign. This time, the tears that Zelda cried were ones of happiness and relief.
***
The morning sickness was, somehow, much worse.
Link sat next to Zelda as she was sick into a bucket, holding her hair back and murmuring words of encouragement. Mila would slip in and take Griffin out, making sure that he didnât see the sight. Once Zelda was done she was exhausted, and she would go back to sleep for another hour or two. She began doing work in their front room, settling in front of the fireplace to look over important documents. Ezlo took over the Council meetings, stopping in after lunch to update her before departing.
It became a priority for Linkâs schedule to become flexible, and he often went back and forth between their chambers and his duties. If he had to travel, he sent Rusl or Commander Viscen, who had become Linkâs right hand man after his coronation. The two were happy to oblige, with Rusl quickly picking up what was going on.
âAnother one on the way, eh?â
The two were in the stables, waiting for Ruslâs horse to be saddled. Link sighed, shaking his head as he looked away.
âWhy is it hard to keep anything from you?â
Rusl laughed loudly, grinning so hard his cheeks must have hurt.
âLink, my boy, I have known you your whole life. I know what you are thinking about before you do!â
The two fell silent for a moment. Link hesitated before speaking again.
âDid . . . Uli ever miscarry?â
The smile on Ruslâs face slowly fell.
âThere were a few times, but we saw it as a message from Ordona that the timing wasnât right. Is Zelda alright?â
Link quickly explained their conversation, which led to Ruslâs face going grim.
âIâm sorry to hear that. It sounds like this one will stick. How is she managing so far?â
âSick as a dog,â Link sighed. âMuch worse than with Griffin.â
âThe second pregnancy can be easy or much worse. It depends on the baby.â
Rusl noticed that Linkâs face had yet to brighten, so he reached over and gave him a reassuring pat on the back.
âAll will be well, my boy. If you have any questions, you can ask. Zelda will be alright.â
A stable boy approached them with his horse. Link helped him into the saddle, and Rusl turned to give Link one last smile.
âIâll see you soon. Give Zelda my love.â
***
If it wasn't morning sickness, it was exhaustion.
Zelda found herself much more tired, often having difficulty waking up in the morning. Link would let her sleep, tiptoeing into Griffinâs room and getting him up before quietly slipping out with him into the front room. Mila would take over then, greeting the Prince before guiding him to whatever adventure they were off to. The couple had yet to break the news to him, as they were waiting for Zeldaâs symptoms to improve.
Ezlo had officially broken the news of the second pregnancy to the Royal Council, and explained that Her Majesty would be working as needed. The members were ecstatic at the news and offered to take on extra work to reduce her stress. Link had been asked to take over meetings, and he was nervous to do so. Since Zeldaâs first pregnancy had been a secret and, well, the Castle had been taken over, she had continued to work throughout. With the two now married and with an heir, it was now expected that he would step up.
âDo you have my notes?â
Link was finishing up with getting dressed, brushing his hair neatly to place his crown on his head. Ezlo had insisted on the formal look, as he normally wore simple tunics or his Generalâs uniform. Zelda was laying in bed, a bucket on the floor and a fresh pitcher of water on her nightstand. Her eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but she was trying to keep herself awake to go over the meeting with him quickly.
âYes, my love. Do you want me to review them with you?â
She clasped a hand over her mouth, eyes closing for a second. Link was about to rush over but she shook her head. Sucking in a deep breath, she reached for the pitcher and poured herself a glass.
âNo, I trust you. Just please take notes during the meeting. We can discuss when you come back.â
Link walked over and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
âGet some rest. Anything you can summon me, Iâll be here as fast as I can.â
He was nervous walking over to the Council, and it didnât help that they all treated him extremely formal when he strode in. Every single member, including Ezlo, stood, bowing their heads deeply and greeting him with a united good morning, Your Majesty.
Link wanted to tell them to sit down and to avoid the formalities, but he recalled that Ezlo wanted this. So instead he returned the greeting, giving them a simple bow of his head and asking them to sit. They waited until he was seated and then sat down themselves, staring at him until he spoke.
âGood morning. Thank you for being here this morning. May the Great Three bless our meeting.â
There was a murmur of agreement, which strangely had his confidence regaining.
âLet me go over the agenda today. First up, Ezlo will be discussing a new trade agreement with Termina.â
The rest of the meeting went smoothly, and Link was relieved when it was over. He decided to stay a few minutes to finish up his notes, bading goodbye to each member as they walked out. Ezlo lingered a few minutes, clasping his hands behind his back.
âGood job, my boy. You led that meeting like a true ruler!â
âThank you?â
Ezlo chuckled.
âYou have a bit of a reputation for just being a military leader. I understand you are the Hero of Twilight, but the royal business is seen as Zeldaâs domain.â
âThatâs fair,â Link mumbled.
âWell, finish your notes and report back to Zelda. Iâm sure sheâs waiting for you to return.â
***
Zeldaâs second trimester went fairly smoothly. Her morning sickness had abated, and while she was still tired it was more manageable. She had begun to show, a noticeable bump developing between her hips. Mila had ordered Anju, the Royal Seamstress, to loosen some of Zeldaâs dresses, with a few maternity dresses ordered as well. Surprisingly, the baby had started to move, much earlier than Griffin had. She had been sipping some tea in the front room with Link when she felt the familiar fluttering.
âOh!â
Link looked up from the reports he was reading.
âWhatâs wrong? Should I get the Doctor?â
She smiled at him.
âThe baby is moving.â
He was at her side in an instant, kneeling down to press a hand carefully on her stomach. It took a moment but he faintly felt it, and he threw his arms around her.
âI love you. I canât believe we made another baby.â
She giggled, burying her face in his shoulder.
âYouâre so silly.â
The two sat in Council meetings together, and often made trips into Castle Town to visit Telma and also to see how their citizens were doing. It was strange to have her pregnancy be acknowledged this time - she never got used to the wide-eyed looks she got as she and Link navigated the streets. Telma had been over the moon at the news, pulling them into tight embraces and grinning.
âYâall hoping for another boy?â
âZel thinks itâs a girl. Iâm not good at that kind of stuff,â Link laughed.
âThe Doctor will be confirming next month,â Zelda mused.
âIf itâs a girl, will it be another Zelda?â
The two had begun discussing baby names. Per Hylian tradition, their daughter would have to be named Zelda. The two had discussed male names, but she just knew they were having a daughter this time.
âItâs tradition,â Link drawled. âIâll have two Zeldas to love.â
She leaned into his side while Telma jokingly made a disgusted face.
âYou two are too sweet. Too sweet!â
The Royal Doctor confirmed the next month that the couple were having a daughter. He congratulated them, grinning as he gave an approximate due date and gave Zelda instructions for the next few weeks.
âPlease continue to take it easy. I highly suggest going for walks, no more than twenty minutes. Your Majesty, if you can, take over a few more of her duties.â
Link nodded, shaking his hand and thanking him for his time. Once the Doctor had left, he turned to Zelda, a wide smile on his face.
âA girl, huh? Looks like we have a perfect pair.â
She hugged him tightly, pulling back to kiss him fiercely. Her eyes studied his handsome face, taking in how excited his eyes were and how he was looking at her as if there was nobody else in Hyrule.
âZelda,â she whispered. âZelda Sonia.â
âSonia?â
She hummed, making her way back to her armchair and carefully sitting down.
âHave you heard the stories of ancient Hyrule? When it was first established?â
Link frowned, racking his brain for an answer.
âI thought the first Zelda was the reincarnated Hylia, and she settled in Hyrule after living in the clouds?â
âYes, that was the establishment of Hyrule. But there are rumors that another ruler may have actually established it.â
âHuh?â
She chuckled, pointing to the chair across from her. He sat down, listening carefully as she spoke.
âIâm sure Shad or maybe Rusl discussed the founding of Hyrule. Yes, the first Zelda was the reincarnation of Hylia, and she and her Chosen Hero established the kingdom. But there is a theory that another group of people actually established Hyrule. There is some evidence to support it, but not much. It seems to have disappeared over the years.â
Link leaned in forward. His mind wandered to the Oocca people and their strange kingdom in the clouds.
âThe first ruler was supposedly named Rauru, just like the Light Sage. His wifeâs name was Sonia.â
âZelda Sonia,â Link murmured.
She beamed in response.
âYes, Zelda Sonia. Her brother will ascend the throne, so her royal duties wonât be as heavy as his.â
Right, the two had yet to discuss how their royal lives would be. Griffin was still too young, and the two had agreed they would delay his duties for as long as possible. He would be educated in princely duties of course, but Zelda didnât want him to go down the same path she had.
Link opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by the door opening, revealing an excited Griffin who threw himself into his fatherâs arms.
âDaddy! Miss Mila butterfly!â
Mila came in chuckling, lifting a small jar filled with butterflies.
âWe had a bit of a nature excursion today,â she mused.
âThatâs excellent, my love!â Zelda said, leaning over to press a kiss to the top of his head.
With her bump now noticeable and her symptoms slightly better, they had explained to Griffin he was going to be a big brother. He had taken the news well, and was excited to know a baby sister was on the way. His small hands gently patted her belly and he pressed a kiss to it.
âSister?â
âSheâs good, darling,â Zelda said, ruffling his hair gently.
***
Queen Zelda was completely bedridden for her last trimester.
The exhaustion had increased tenfold, and her ankles had swelled up to the point that being on her feet was painful. She was incredibly self-conscious about it, often hiding her legs whenever Link came into the room. The Royal Doctor had assured her it was normal, and simply stated she had no choice but to relax and take it easy.
âKeeping your legs elevated should help with the swelling,â he assured her.
Link was now fully taking over her duties, sitting in on Council meetings, reviewing and signing documents, and hosting citizens in the Great Hall to listen to their concerns. On top of that, he had to continue with his military duties, which left him drained. Most nights he came into bed and collapsed beside Zelda, who stroked his hair until he fell into a deep sleep.
With the due date approaching, the two began to get nervous. The Royal Doctor would be delivering their daughter and had come up with an elaborate plan. Unlike Griffinâs delivery in Ordon, he would be there the entire time to observe Zelda and guide her. Mila had been instructed to keep Griffin away until Zelda Sonia was there, and then he would come to meet her.
âI expect labor to be much shorter since you have experienced it already,â the Doctor said.
Ezlo urged Link to take weekends off, and he did so. Most mornings were spent sleeping, with Griffin creeping into bed and snuggling between his parents. Once Link was up and about, he took the Prince into town to see Telma and the others or to simply explore what the city had to offer. Zelda would read to him once they returned, her voice soft as Griffin listened to her in awe. Sometimes the two would draw, with the young Prince drawing the many things he had seen while out.
âWe might have an artist on our hands,â Zelda teased Link.
The swelling had started to subside the month before her due date, but the Doctor urged her to limit her physical exertion.
âRemember, walking for no more than twenty minutes,â he sternly reminded her.
Zelda began joining the two, but their walks were limited to the Castle. They spent hours in the garden, finding a shady spot to lay a blanket and enjoy the day. Griffin would chase butterflies, laughing loudly as his parents watched on with adoration. Zelda sketched the various flowers in the garden, showing them to him and watching as he scribbled and tried to replicate them. Link watched on with joy, just enjoying the simple moments with his little family.
It was during one of those moments that Zelda caught him staring. She cocked her head to the side, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
âIs something the matter, my love?â
He shook his head, scooting over to wrap an arm around her shoulder. She leaned into him instinctively, her head turning back to watch Griffin as he sniffed some roses nearby.
âThis just makes me so happy. Our little family.â
His hand fell down to gently rub her belly, feeling their daughterâs feisty kicks.
âI canât wait for her to join us.â
Zelda smiled and fought back tears as she pulled back to kiss him deeply. When they pulled apart, he was looking at her with so much love that she felt overwhelmed with emotion. The two sat in their little piece of heaven, knowing that the next chapter of their life was going to be even better than the one they were currently in.
Kageyama Tobio appears to have a picture perfect life, girlfriend included. Behind the scenes, though, he's miserable with an attention hungry partner. When you two have a chance meeting, everything changes.

Fame was a weird thing.
As you sat in your apartment curled up on your couch watching TV, you began to reflect on the past few months of your life. You were a breakout star, the TV show you had just finished filming now a huge hit. It was hard not to hear about it - it was the hot show right now. Your name kept coming up in the media, and it was weird to see your face pop up often everywhere you went. Your apartment had become your refuge, as it was the only place where you could be alone and just you.
Part of your craft included not watching your work, but even as you scrolled through your TV to find something to watch your face kept popping up alongside the title of the show. You even got a few ads about the show, causing you to cringe at seeing your face. It wasnât that you were embarrassed about your work, it was just . . . weird.
âIâm a breakout star,â you muttered to yourself. âIâm a celebrity.â
After a moment you turned off the TV, letting out a long sigh as you rested your head against the back of your couch. Your eyes studied the ceiling as you tried to gather your thoughts. It was a whirlwind week, and you were exhausted. Life had been so chaotic lately, and you were grateful that you had today to relax, rejuvenate, and recharge to start all over again. But it was hard to do those three things when your mind wouldnât shut up.
Frustrated, you stood up and strode over to your kitchen, opening your fridge and reaching for your favorite drink. Sighing, you poured yourself a glass and leaned against the center island. Your phone vibrated on the couch, and you figured it was just your agent checking in. Many networks had sent over scripts and she was dying to know which ones had caught your eye. You werenât ready to look them over so you kept ignoring her texts.
Shouldnât you be grateful for how your life was turning out?
Letting out another sigh, you downed the rest of your drink and returned to the couch. Just as you had predicted, you had an unread text from your agent.
Hey! Just checking in. Give me a call when you can đ
You didnât open the message and simply swiped it away. The views outside your window showed a beautiful day, the sky cloudless and so blue it would take anyone elseâs breath away. Strolling over you opened the window, closing your eyes as you felt the warmth of the sun and felt the wind blowing gently against your skin.
The fresh air helped to soothe your mind, and you were able to think clearly. Your breakout show was a hit, described as a Millennial Sex and the City with slightly risque scenes. When you had auditioned for the role, you had only done so because you had doubted that you would get it. The second call back had been a shock, but the third one had you reeling. The topic of nudity had been brought up from the start, and you had only agreed to it because of your doubts. But when you were announced as the showâs lead, the reality of it sunk in and you realized what was to come.
However, despite this being your first big role, you were praised for how well you handled everything. Your crew were always supportive, helping to guide you as you navigated each scene. The critics loved you, stating you dealt with those intimate scenes with such grace and expertise it was hard to believe you were a newbie actress. It hadnât hurt that your coworkers had made days on set fun, and your insecurities and fears quickly melted away.
Your male co-star had been just as nervous as you, which helped put your mind at ease. He had also been praised for how professional he was, especially with how it was common for male actors to take advantage of their coworkers. The two of you had developed a close bond, and it had helped as you continued with filming throughout the season.
Your phone vibrated, another text from your agent. This time, it was a link to an article praising your performance.
Break out actress takes social media by storm!
With the rise of streaming and the vast amount of content available, itâs hard to find original shows. However, look no further than this new original straight from Japan in collaboration with Netflix! If you enjoyed Carrie Bradshawâs escapades in Sex and the City, look no further than this show.
You skimmed through the article, your smile growing with each sentence you read. The article concluded with a glowing review of your acting, praising your chemistry with your co-star and the confidence you had had navigating the love scenes.
Nudity is very commonplace in the media, but it was done so well and tastefully due to the actressâs grace and professionalism. Her co-stars have sang nothing but praises about her, and we can see why!
Your agent sent another text, congratulating you and stating the network wanted to schedule a meeting to discuss season two. Apparently the news had just come in, and she wanted to get the jump on it.
Call me!!!!!!
You replied with a thumbs up and a simple eating lunch, call you after. She replied by liking the message, and you sighed, knowing you had peace for a while.
While you hadnât minded the nudity (it had given you a chance to really get into healthy shape), you were worried about the effects. You knew most female celebrities who did nudity once were often asked to do it repeatedly. Your agent hadnât brought it up since filming wrapped, but you knew the conversation was coming. It had been a little difficult to put your body out there, but whatâs done is done.
The show had made you into a budding sex symbol. You had seen a few social media posts praising your body, which was . . . nice? Strange? You could get into how women were constantly objectified, especially in the media, but it was still sort of nice that your body had been praised so well.
Did that make you a bad person? Or a whore?
Blah. Something else for you to discuss with your therapist.
The nature of your photoshoots promoting the show had been risque. A few tame topless shots where you covered your chest with your hair or arms. A few suggestive shoots with your co-star where you draped seductively across his lap. One shoot had you naked but using everyday household objects to cover yourself.
Was this what you were destined for now?
Pouting, you settled back onto the couch. With the media tour over, you had a few days before you had to jump back into work. Your fingers itched with the need to scroll social media, but you threw your phone to the opposite side of the couch.
âLetâs not do that,â you muttered to yourself.
The screen lit up, showing your co-starâs name on the screen.
We got renewed for season 2???????
Smiling, you unlocked your phone and typed out a swift reply.
I know, itâs insane!!! We get to do this again for another season!
He replied with a bunch of emojis before another text came in.
I canât wait! Iâm so lucky to continue to work with you đ
Youâre awesome!
Youâre too sweet. You texted back, cheeks hurting from how big you were smiling.
He liked your message with a heart. You leaned further into the couch cushions, smiling up at the ceiling. Fame was a weird thing. Your agent had given you a crash course on what to expect, along with a media prep class so you werenât awkward or did anything to attract negative attention.
âYou need to act with the expectation that everything you do will be documented.â
âYou canât mean everything,â you had smirked.
âNo, literally. I mean it. Havenât you heard about celebrity stalkers?â
Your heart stopped in your chest. That was the one thing that you were the most scared about. The network had assured security would be hired for all media appearances, but outside of that you were responsible for it. There hadnât been any scary instances during your media tour, but the thought was always there in the back of your mind.
Because you were a newbie, your fanbase was essentially nonexistent. But when the first trailer dropped you developed a following. It grew steadily as you did interviews, social media posts, and screenings of the first episode. Your co-star had done a few tiny parts before, so your joint posts together had helped elevate your status. At the premiere of the show, you were overwhelmed by the amount of people asking for your autograph and photo.
Your agent had hired a media assistant to review your posts. The two of you had developed a plan for appearances, taking behind the scenes photos and videos and posting them after they aired. When each episode aired, you posted a carousel of content from the filming. Your co-star had suggested taking a few saucy selfies together for your love scenes, and you had tagged him with a flirty caption when those scenes aired.
You two are too cute!
Are you two dating in real life? đ
Your scenes were HOT
Season 2 when???
Fame was weird, but you couldnât deny it was flattering. With season 2 now confirmed, you knew you would have to continue to get used to it. There was nowhere else to go but up, right?
Your mind wandered back to the past few weeks doing promos, attending your first interviews and talking about the mindset you were in when you played your character and how you and your co-star prepped for your love scenes. A lot of interviewers were focused on how this was basically your first role, and they asked how you had gotten so lucky. There was a small part of you that was irked by that question - were they subtly trying to say you sucked? Your agent had quickly prepped you after the first one, reminding you to focus on how grateful you were for the opportunity.
âYou donât want to come off as a bitch,â she warned you.
Other interviewers asked if you and your co-star were an item. The two of you laughed it off, stating that your close friendship was the reason for the intense chemistry. While he was incredibly attractive, it just didnât feel right to mix business with pleasure. Sure, a lot of actors hooked up with their co-stars, but this was your first role. Plus, you were pretty sure your co-star was sleeping with one of the minor actresses, so you knew pursuing him was useless.
Your first media event was intense. A local popular magazine was throwing an event to promote upcoming TV shows, and your cast was invited. It was more of a networking event, with snippets of each show expected to play and time for mingling. Your stylist had opted for a form-fitting jumpsuit with flowy hair and shimmery, natural makeup. The cameras ate you up, and you were happy with how the shots came out. It had been intimidating to meet the actors that you looked up to and enjoyed watching, but thankfully they were all really nice and wished you luck with your new show. A few actors had even hit on you, but your agent had steered you clear of them.
âNo, nope! They have a reputation,â she mumbled to you.
The photoshoots for different magazines and websites had been fun, and you grew more confident with each one. Besides the risque ones, you did a few fashion ones showcasing the looks for next season and one focusing on your characterâs style. The ones with your cast were the best ones, and it felt like a fun day instead of a work one. One photoshoot had let you leave with a beautiful jacket you had fallen in love with, and you left feeling like you were walking on clouds. Â It had been a lot, but you were truly grateful for it all. You had worked so hard to get here, moving to Japan to pursue more opportunities after you had been scouted there while on vacation. Letting out one last sigh, you reached for your phone and called your agent back.
You work for Endeavor as his Assistant, but have been hiding your Quirk to avoid Hero work. When a fire breaks out at work & you use your Quirk, Endeavor approaches you with a proposition to marry his youngest son, Shouto.

Endeavor stopped by your desk the following Monday, hovering as you finished typing up an email. You glanced up at him, noting the small smile on his face.
âGood morning,â you greeted him. âIs . . . something the matter?â
âDo you have a quick minute?â he asked, gesturing to his office door behind you.
âOf course, sir,â you nodded.
He walked past you, waiting in the doorway as you stood up and swept past him. As per usual, he gestured for you to sit in the chair in front of his desk. You did so, watching him nervously as he settled into his desk and studied you silently.
âI wanted to let you know before I announced anything. I am arranging a private celebration for you and Shouto.â
Your heart leapt in your chest.
âO-oh! Okay, thatâs, er, fine with me.â
Blinking, you cocked your head to the side.
âDoes Shouto know this?â
There was a glimmer of something in his eye at your question. He nodded, leaning back comfortably in his chair.
âI spoke to him this morning before he left for work. He told me he was on board with it.â
You wondered if he would text you about it. The two of you texted often, asking about each otherâs days and continuing to get to know each other. This was the first âofficialâ engagement event that the two of you would be attending, and the thought had you nervous.
âWhen I say private, I mean private,â he assured you.
When you looked up, Endeavorâs face had changed into one of sympathy.
âI know this whole situation is overwhelming. I want to make sure your first event together is something comfortable. The whole affair will be hosted at our home and the guestlist will be minimal. There wonât be any media present, but we will be sharing photos the day after.â
Great, you thought grimly. I wonder how many fangirls will come after me.
âOkay,â you replied simply. âWhen is the event?â
âThis Saturday,â he said sheepishly. âIâm sorry itâs so soon, but we are on a tight schedule.â
Right.
âI will be sharing the guest list with you, of course. Actually, I have it here with me.â
He turned on his computer and quickly clicked away, the printer whirring to life. Once the document was printed he handed it to you, eyes watching your face as you studied the list. You recognized many of the names, as the Top Heroes made up most of the list. The other familiar names were Shoutoâs former classmates at UA, their names highlighted with asterisks next to them.
âWe capped the list at fifty,â Endeavor explained. âOut of those fifty, Iâm not sure how many will be able to attend.â
âRight,â you nodded. âI donât think too many Heroes can be in one place at once.â
âCorrect,â he beamed, impressed that you recognized that fact.
The list had been arranged by Hero ranking, with Lemillion at the top. Your mind worked through what you knew about him - he was older than Shouto, but you recalled hearing that they had worked together while in school. Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods were an item, so you figured they would come as a couple. Best Jeanist had come by the agency a few times, apparently having a cordial relationship with your boss.
âDo . . . you know any of these heroes?â
You shook your head.
âUnless theyâve been in this office I donât interact with heroes much,â you admitted.
âWell, Shoutoâs friends will surely make sure to talk to you. But I can introduce you to the rest.â
Mirko was a badass. You were also slightly intimidated by her because not only was she strong but she was gorgeous. Was she someone Shouto was into . . . ? You thought the same about Nejire.
Wait, why were you so concerned about what Shouto thought?
Your cheeks flushed as you handed the list back to Endeavor. He shook his head, pushing it back towards you.
âThatâs for you. Go ahead and study the list. Iâll send you the final list Friday. Iâve asked everyone to respond by Thursday night.â
You skimmed the list before flipping it over on your lap.
âAnything else, sir?â
âOh! Yes, I almost forgot.â
He leaned forward on his desk.
âIt is a black tie affair. Given the nature of the event, there is a dress code.â
Great, even more pressure. You nodded, about to stand but he stopped you.
âYou donât need to lift a single finger, I assure you. I will be taking care of everything. If there is anything I might want your input on, I will definitely reach out to you. I am planning on doing the same with Shouto.â
âThank you, sir,â you said, giving him a soft smile.
âWill you drop the formalities? Itâs Enji,â he laughed.
It was still weird that your boss was going to be your âfather-in-law.â Although you and Shouto had decided to mutually break up at the end, you knew you still had to treat Endeavor a certain way.
Endeavor reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, frowning as he began typing out a message.
âDo you have an idea what you plan on wearing?â
You tried not to grimace at the thought. Given that you had no reason to have nice dresses, you realized you would have to make time to go buy a dress. With all the Pro Heroes planning on being in attendance, you knew you had to look good. What was one supposed to wear to their own engagement party? Is it bad to wear white?
âI donât, but I will figure something out.â
He raised an eyebrow.
âDo you . . . not have a formal dress?â
Your cheeks burned as you squirmed in your seat.
âEr, itâs been a while since Iâve attended a formal event.â
The gears in his head seemed to be turning as he gave a slow nod. He began typing on his phone again, furiously sending a text.
âDo me a favor, send me your measurements and a color palette youâre interested in.â
âI-Iâm sorry?â
Endeavor blinked, putting his phone down slowly.
âEr, would you prefer not sending me your measurements?â
âNo, no, itâs just . . . why?â
âIâll take care of your dress.â
He tapped his chin in thought.
âIn fact, Iâll pay for your beauty too. Hair and makeup, right?â
âI canât ask you to do that!â you exclaimed.
He waved his hand dismissively.
âNot a problem,â he assured you. âI have a stylist who helps me with media appearances. Sheâs also helped my wife and daughter in the past.â
It was the first time he had mentioned his wife to you. You wanted to know more but knew it wasnât the right moment to ask.
âHow about this. Why donât you take Friday off and meet with her? You two can go shopping and decide on your âlook.ââ
âI-I canât possibly take a day off just for that,â you stammered out.
âIâll still pay you for the day.â
Was he being serious right now?!
âPlease, let me do this for you,â he said, voice low. âItâs the least I can do.â
You sighed.
âThank you.â
Endeavor sent one last text.
âI just texted you the stylistâs information. I already gave her the heads up. You two should get into contact and start making plans for Friday.â
You stood up, biting your lip before sinking into a bow.
âThank you, Enji. You are much too kind.â
Before he could respond, you turned on your heel and made your way back to your desk. You sank into your chair, letting out a long breath as your phone lit up with a new text. It was Shouto, asking if his Father had talked to you yet.
Just finished talking to him. He told me he talked to you?
While Shouto typed up a reply you opened the text with the stylistâs number. You saved her number and sent an introductory text before going back to Shoutoâs text thread.
He did, yes. Are you alright?
Overwhelmed. Nervous. Afraid.
I will be.
***
Endeavor had decided the theme for the engagement celebration would be âBlossoming Love.â He had pulled you back into his office Wednesday to go over it with you. Apparently Shoutoâs sister had come up with it, and the theme was easy enough to plan that he had agreed. Shouto hadnât objected to it, so you didnât either.
âShould I buy a floral dress?â you asked.
âYou can if you want,â Endeavor shrugged. âWhatever you want, remember?â
You nodded.
âWe updated the invitations to the Pro Heroes to reflect the theme. A few responses have come in, but they have until tomorrow night.â
âDo you need my help with anything?â
"No, no, you just need to show up with Shouto,â he chuckled.
The stylist had been informed about the theme, and the two of you kept it in mind as you shopped. She wanted to go for a pastel dress, with your hair curled and a flower crown of sorts finishing the look. However, after shopping around for a few hours, you had yet to find the perfect dress. The two of you were about to give up and break for lunch when you walked into a random boutique. As you navigated the racks, a white dress caught your eye. It was an off the shoulder one with a sweetheart cut, with the dress covered in lace flowers. The stylist walked over, studying it before a slow grin spread across her face.
âThatâs the one!â
You tried it on and was happy to see it fit you quite well. She walked around you to examine it, making mental notes to pinch in a little more at the waist to accentuate your figure. Her eyes flickered to your bust, a slow smile spread across her face.
âDo you feel comfortable getting some lingerie with me?â
Heat rushed to your cheeks but you gave a slow nod. Once the dress was paid for (thanks Enji), the two of you rushed to a high-end lingerie boutique and bought a cute white matching set.
âWith a low cut like that, we need your boobs to be the main event.â
âS-shouldnât I dress more modestly?â you stammered. âItâs my engagement party.â
âAbsolutely not!â she frowned. âYour fiance should want to ravage you. Itâs why youâre getting married in the first place, right?â
Saturday came quickly, and you were nervous as you rode to the Todoroki home. You felt absolutely beautiful, but a part of you was wondering if it was wasted on you. The engagement wasnât real, and you had to put on appearances the entire night. Shouto had texted you that morning, checking in on you constantly throughout the day.
Iâm just as nervous as you are. Weâll be okay đ
The driver pulled to a stop in front of the gates, which was adorned by a cherry blossom wreath. You carefully stepped out, thanking him before walking up and pressing the doorbell. A female voice quickly answered, stress staining the tone.
âYes, whoâs there? Why are you early?!â
âEr, hi,â you introduced yourself.
âOh my gosh! Iâm so sorry! Iâll buzz you in!â
You assumed it was your âsister-in-lawâ and stepped into the courtyard. Nothing had seemingly changed, and you followed the path to the front entrance. You lifted your hand to knock but the door swung open, revealing a young woman a few years older than you.
âHi! It is so nice to meet you!â
Fuyumi Todoroki had a kind face with snow white hair streaked with tiny pieces of red. She pulled you into a tight hug, taking a step back to study you.
âWow! Youâre so pretty!â
You laughed, waving a hand dismissively.
âYouâre too kind. Do you need help with anything?â
âOh, no. Tonight is all about you and Shouto. In fact, heâs waiting for you!â
She led you past the entrance hall into the foyer, and your mouth fell open. The entirety of the room looked like a nursery, with different flowers spread about. A sweet smell wafted through the room, reminding you of a warm Spring day.
âI think I might have gone overboard,â Fuyumi laughed nervously.
âNo, itâs nice!â you assured her.
âI havenât even put up the banners yet,â she muttered.
She led you down a side hall towards what you assumed were bedrooms. When she stopped in front of one, she paused a moment before knocking swiftly.
âSho?â
There was a moment before his deep voice responded.
âFuyumi? Is everything alright?â
âYes, your fiance is here!â
Another pause.
âCome in.â
She gave you a smile before quietly sliding the door open. The home was of a traditional Japanese style, but the room where Shouto was waiting was decorated in more of a modern style. Shouto stood up from the bed he had been sitting on. He was already dressed for the event, wearing a white tuxedo to match your dress. Your heart skipped a beat as he bowed his head in greeting.
âDad told me you two have to wait here until youâre summoned. If you need anything, ring the servantâs bell.â
âThank you, sis. Do you need help with anything?â
Fuyumi let out a long sigh.
âI can see why you two are together. No, I am perfectly fine. You two settle in - Dad will come get you later.â
With that, she turned on her heel and slipped out. There was an awkward pause before Shouto cleared his throat. When you turned to look at him, his eyes were appraising your figure, a softness touching them.
âYou look beautiful.â
âThank you,â you replied, shyly looking away.
Your cheeks were burning, and you didnât want him to notice. He gestured for you to sit on the bed, and you did so carefully. There was a desk and chair across from it, and he pulled the chair down and sank into it.
âWe are probably going to be here a while. My Father wanted to make sure we were both here so we werenât rushing or missing anything.â
âI understand,â you smiled.
He hesitated for a second before speaking again.
âDid . . . my sister make you uncomfortable in any way?â
You blinked.
âNot at all! She seemed overwhelmed, but she was really nice.â
âIâm glad.â
He lapsed into silence, his phone vibrating in his pocket. Frowning, he reached for it and began scrolling, muttering out an apology and furiously typing away. You took a moment to study him, really study him, because he just looked so damn good.
His bicolored hair was brushed back, revealing his forehead. Maybe it was because his hair normally covered most of it, but his face seemed more chiseled somehow. The tuxedo he was wearing strained against his large frame, his shoulders threatening to rip the seams. His bowtie matched the color of the cherry blossoms strewn around, with a matching handkerchief in his chest pocket. You lingered on his fingers, watching how the long digits held his phone easily and somehow elegantly moved across his screen.
âSorry, itâs work. They know Iâm off tonight but I still have to read their check ins.â
Shouto looked up, his words breaking you out of your reverie. You were mesmerized by his face, by his different colored eyes studying you gently like always. A part of you agreed that it was because his hair was pushed back that he seemed so handsome. A brow quirked up in worry, and you quickly regained your composure.
âItâs okay! Do what you need to.â
âThank you.â
He dove back into his phone, leaving you slightly disappointed. Although you knew it was most likely work, you felt there was still a wall up between you two. He hadnât spoken much to you beyond a single compliment. Even though it was your engagement party, he was still acting reserved around you. Perhaps it was manners, perhaps it was nerves - with Shouto, you would never really know. You squirmed on the bed, thinking of ways to break the ice while you waited for Enji to come and collect you.
âIs . . . everything alright?â
Shouto looked up again, surprise flickering across his face.
âEr, yes. My top Sidekick is in charge today, and I trust him. But crime never stops, so I have to be vigilant on my end.â
âOh, okay.â
He looked back down at his phone. You bit back a sigh as you leaned back against the bed, looking blankly up at the ceiling. You werenât sure how much time had passed before a series of rapid knocks announced that you both were now needed.
***
The night ended up being a long one.
However, you and Shouto were literally connected to the hip, rarely leaving each otherâs side. The only time you separated was to step out to use the restroom, and once the other was back you were together once again. While following Enji, Shouto had quietly asked if it would be okay for him to wrap an arm around your waist and, if necessary, your hip.
âFor appearanceâs sake, of course,â he said quickly.
âSure, thatâs fine,â you whispered back.
Thus, the entirety of the night his arm was glued to you. If it wasnât wrapped gently around your waist, keeping you pressed to him, it was wrapped casually around your hip. His hands never wandered, and he gently guided you as you navigated the room. It was nice to feel his warmth against you, and you found yourself leaning into him after some time. Surprisingly, the gesture felt so natural. It seemed to be fooling everyone, as the looks you were given seemed convinced enough.
Shouto was extremely polite greeting everyone, introducing you first before introducing his friends. You recognized a few faces, especially his school friends, and you fought hard not to be star struck. Everyone received you with warmth, and after their friendly greeting you were showered with congratulations. You would smile in response, giving them your best smile as you thanked them.
âWho would have thought Icy Hot over here would get married?â Bakugou gruffed out.
Deku, who had introduced himself as Izuku but insisted you call him Deku, had laughed, shaking his head before clapping a hand on the blondâs shoulder.
âWhy are you so surprised? I think out of all three of us we secretly thought he would be first.â
âReally?â you asked. âHow come?â
âShouto has a good heart,â Deku smiled. âI knew once he found the right person it wouldnât take long for him to propose.â
You spared a glance at Shouto. His face was impassive, but you could have sworn his years were red. He cleared his throat and changed the subject, much to your disappointment.
As the night went on, you realized that Shouto was actually really stoic and hard to read. Even his good friends and former mentors didnât seem to faze him, his expression remaining the same and not betraying any trace of emotion. His tone never seemed to waver, always keeping that practiced, polite tone. You hoped that you could sense anything through his touch, but just like his tone his hands remained carefully on you.
When the two of you stepped aside to get snacks, you made sure to check on him.
âAre you doing okay?â you asked, pouring him a drink.
âI am, thank you. Are you?â
You nodded, handing him the cup. He took a long sip but didnât say anything, instead steering you back to a new person to meet. The night went on exactly the same, and once Enji announced that it was coming to an end you hoped Shouto would loosen up and open up to you a bit. As partygoers made their way out, giving you two one last congratulations, you leaned against Shouto and impatiently waited for the last person to leave. Once the doors closed, you let out a long sigh and angled your head to look up at him.
âWe did it!â
He chuckled, stepping away from you and letting his arm fall to his side.
âYes, we did indeed.â
Enji clapped his hands, looking at you two proudly.
âYou both did well. Everyone seemed really excited for you two.â
He glanced at his watch and frowned.
âItâs late, let me order a car for you. Shouto, walk her out will you?â
Shouto responded by turning towards the door and opening it for you. The two of you quietly walked through the courtyard, not exchanging a single word. You hesitated before finally speaking as you two approached the main gate.
âShouto, are you really okay? I know this was . . . a lot.â
There was a moment before he shrugged.
âWhat can we do? Weâve committed to the bit.â
Although he was telling the truth, it still stung to hear. You gave him a stiff smile, walking ahead of him towards the gate. The two of you stood awkwardly until your car arrived. He opened the door for you, offering a hand so you could slide in easily. You wished him a good night, reaching to close the door but he hesitated.
âThank you for tonight. I enjoyed myself.â
âOf course,â you beamed. âI did, too. See you soon?â
âSee you soon.â
With that, he closed your door. The driver set off, heading towards the part of the city where your apartment was. You leaned your head against the rest, closing your eyes as the exhaustion of the evening finally set in. The lull of the car had you dozing off, your mind replaying the events of the night.
One thing was for sure - you had a new goal. You wanted to break through Shoutoâs stoic shell and see who the real him was. Since meeting him, you felt as if you were meeting a façade, a really well media trained version of him. The only brief moment you had seen the real him was at your first meeting when he had been angry at Enji. Even his text messages seemed a little too perfect sometimes. You knew you both were playing a role, but you had hoped you two could get close.
You were approaching your apartment when your phone buzzed. Shoutoâs name was across the screen, sending your heart straight into your throat.
I know I already told you, but I really enjoyed tonight. You looked beautiful. Iâm sorry I didnât tell you enough tonight.
A slow smile spread across your lips. You liked the message with a heart and typed out a response.
I had fun tonight too. Your friends seem really nice! I didnât get a chance to tell you how handsome you looked you were really distracting đ
He liked the message with a heart right away, bubbles appearing indicating he was typing. While you waited for his response, you made up your mind and decided you were going to break his tough exterior and get to know the real him.
