Modern football got you down? Is the commercialization and influx of money from autocratic regimes and sketchy oil barons leaving a feeling of angst or disenchantment?
Then join us for a bit of football design nostalgia.
Stuart Caldwell began collecting Aston Villa match programmes in 1969. After nearly half a century, he’d built an impressive collection.
His son Matthew recently delved into his father’s stash and has gone about meticulously presenting them for a new audience.
“To me, these match day programmes surpass any of the shiny, content heavy programmes that we see today. Their simple forms, basic graphic treatments and plain talking articles effortlessly capture how football was once a much simpler game, played on bedraggled pitches by working-class heroes - and watched by the surrounding communities whose greatest escape from the stresses of life was watching football,” Matthew told Where Is Football.
The images above are some of Matthew’s favorites, but you can see the full collection and follow along on the One Shilling Instagram page.
