My desk - librarian without a library!
#SpringStatement At 8am this morning I passed 9 people sleeping, or waking up from sleeping in doorways on Henry St. I gave up counting after 9. As I walked down Talbot St I didn't spot the couple I often see sitting against a door, sniffing solvents. I passed two men, worse for wear and with sleeping bags over their shoulders, walking by the striking bus drivers at Bus Áras. Last night the service on Merchants Quay was temporarily closed due to an attack on a staff member. There is absolutely everything wrong with the policies related to homelessness in Ireland. And these are just the visible signs. I've heard an awful lot of do-gooders and holy-joes speak in my time, but no one has ever really had such an impact as Peter McVerry, an example of compassion, perseverance, rage, and yet somehow calmness too. Fundraising for homelessness is not just about beds and food, but in Ireland these organisations also need continued support so they can research and present policy recommendations etc to government in the hope that something might sink in. Noonan can promise all the tax cuts he wants, but as long as such massive pits are opening up beneath the marginalised in society, I hope that we won't feel comfortable with our sweetened take home pay.
I nearly stopped to take a photo of this mural myself the other evening. I hope that these racist and prejudiced views will become extinct soon....
For too long, there has been a dearth of research, discussion, and published content related to locally focused advocacy, policy, and funding issues for libraries. Today, EveryLibrary is proud to announce the launch of “The Political Librarian”, a new journal which will address these very issues. As the only national organization dedicated exclusively to local funding and policy outcomes for libraries, whether at the ballot box or through town/city/county government negotiations, EveryLibrary is uniquely positioned to fill this gap. Today, we are making a call for contributions for Issue 1, Volume 1 to be published on September 5th, 2015.
We seek contributions that:
Further a discussion of tax policy and public policy at the local level
Explore and review ordinances, regulations and legislation, or propose new model language that actuate policy or revenue at a local level
Specifically engage disparities in community outcomes based on current funding and authority models for libraries
Provide and encourage experiential input about the way that current policy models impact library service delivery and community outcomes
Provide and encourage explorations of new, underutilized, or experimental models to address local library funding or authority
Provide resources and tactics that libraries can use to educate stakeholders on the essential role of libraries and librarians in their local community

Pigs! Taking over CHQ Building...
I lived with just boys for housemates for a while in college. I had this #guerrillagirls poster up on the wall - they totally got it. It's important to remember on #IWD2015 that change takes time. Men (and women) who were raised by feminist parents have not quite replaced those of more old fashioned views on recruitment panels etc...but it's coming. Change takes time.
My art, I decide, and my stories, these things are mine. Fuck, so is my body, my hair, and my touch. I own these things—all of them—and I can sell them or trade them or give them away

The books I finished in 2014
I think these are all the books I read this year, mainly as eBooks or Audio, so I could be forgetting some I read in print. Nineteen is a lot more than I have read in a long time - probably since I went travelling! I was thinking of rearranging them into the order I read them but can't quite remember so alphabetical will do.
