Do you use a thesaurus when writing? I was wondering because I seem in constant need of one, or maybe I just don’t know enough words?

Sometimes, to prod my brain. And I used to read Roget's Thesaurus for pleasure. Thesauruses are dangerous, in that they give you lists of words and it's up to you to know the differences between the words and what they mean exactly. A big word that doesn't mean what the person who put it down thinks it means is often evidence of a synonym finder or thesaurus taking them to misleading places.

I have also learned this is great for [PICK A COOL NAME FOR A SHIP] and [LOOK UP THE FACTS ABOUT OXYGEN LEVELS] and [WHAT’S THE WORD] and [DOUBLECHECK CHARACTER’S EYE COLOR] and ALL KINDS OF THINGS.

Anything that isn’t critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while I’m currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I don’t get them out right now? Brackets.

This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. There’s no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts you’ve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I don’t forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.

This works for academic writing too. If you know where you’re going just leave yourself notes to fill in later. I do this all the time,

Yep.  If you want to tag those fill-in bits it for easy Find/Replace, start with TK, as it’s an uncommon pair of letters to often see together.

In the evening, Charlotte sees if she inherited her grandfather’s skill at blackjack. Interestingly, this comes on the Eve of the tenth anniversary of her grandma’s death.

Landing in Las Vegas, Charlotte and Bryan keenly, if only jokingly, keep an eye out for Godzilla.

At exactly midnight on Sunday, April 17, Bryan opens a Coca-Cola and takes his first sip of soda since March 1. At the same time, Charlotte plays a song featuring a word that was forbidden, at least from worship spaces, during that time.

Being Good Friday, Bryan attends Mass. he does not have any difficulties at a French language service. The bigger difficulty is finding a sushi or seafood restaurant that isn’t packed. He and Charlotte end up going to an Italian restaurant, and he orders a vegetarian pasta.
