@shiocreator
This is what it looks like in the app, btw. Crazy that they can just introduce new stuff without asking or telling users and wait for the user to tell them no.
Random 'Team as Family' Scenes I’m absolutely feral for:
when the leader just says a character’s name and they reply “got it” and do their thing, like taking down a whole room or or using their powers, without having to be told what to do exactly
generally, non-verbal communication that goes perfectly
chaotic conversation lapping over each other, with comedic lines barely audible in the chaos
slice of life moments where the characters are just showing off to each other with their unique skillset and having flashy play-fights
easy-going banter
references to events that did not happen on screen, showing that they are friends beyond work

"my understanders will understand me"
There is always an understander. Never giveup
some characters just need to run away from their current circumstances and survive (just barely) on the streets or in the wilderness for a while, you know? i don't think it's necessarily the most efficient path to healing and it's certainly not the least painful/traumatic one but sometimes a character has been so stripped of agency and you just want to see them run away and forcibly shift their genre to survival thriller......
“when i was little” brother you are 5’3. so you must mean yesterday. or five minutes ago.
I do think that kids media should have big words in it. I unironically learned a lot of vocabulary from looking up words I heard while watching Phineas and Ferb when I was growing up.
you can ship people without wanting them to date or get married or even have sex. not everything has to be girlfriends or boyfriends or husbands or wives or whatever. you can ship a completely unlabelable kind of relationship.
A proposal
Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.
It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”
For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:
[gif of a white man saying “I don’t know what I expected” in a deadpan manner]
The “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag would essentially be a “what it says on the tin” metatag, indicating “you see the tropes and concepts tagged here? they are going to appear in this fic. exactly as said. there will not necessarily be any subversion, authorial commentary condemning problematic aspects, or meditation on potential harm. this fic contains dead dove. if you proceed, you should expect to encounter it.”

Happy 10 years to Dead Dove Do Not Eat
ghost character that goes “oooooh” and rattles chains, and eventually we see a flashback to when they were alive and constantly went “ooooooh” and rattled chains, surrounded by regular people at the office
PSA to every woman or woman adjascent person you can wear swim trunks. Like instead of bikini bottoms or above your swimsuit. That is an option. You don't have to wear what is essentially just very revealing panties in public. You can wear swim trunks. I'm making this post because I didn't realise that this was an option for the longest time but like you can wear swim trunks
yesterday in economic botany we were learning about plant based oil compounds and stuff and my botany professor was talking about lynn seed oil, which in woodworking is rubbed on over furniture as a varnish. this oil has an exothermic chemical reaction with oxygen, meaning that the reaction creates heat. what often happens, apparently, is that woodworkers will finish rubbing on the oil with a rag and then will ball up the rag and throw it away, but because the reaction is taking place and the heat can’t escape (like it would on a piece of furniture where it can be cooled) it gets trapped in the rag, which gets hotter and hotter until it reaches the temperature where it bursts into flame. apparently many woodworking shops have been burned down by this. the proper way to dispose of rags with this oil is to hang them up on a clothesline, so again the reaction never gets enough heat to start a fire. im telling you this because im a writer and ive never heard of substance that will just…spontaneously combust conveniently like that so long as it’s in a confined space. my botany professor tried it in a trash can in his driveway and it did indeed burst into flame after 45 minutes, which is an exceptionally convenient time delay. im sorry im tying this so fast my laptop is on 2% battery and theres no outlet an
❌ “friends don’t look at friends like that” devalues friendship/platonic forms of love, pushes amatonormativity
❌ “historians will call them friends” devalues historians and forces complex relationships into modern simplicities, also devalues friendship/platonic forms of love
✅ “do they know its legal now” suggests the characters are stupid, poorly suggests that this is the only barrier to their relationship—both of which are funny as hell
one argument you often see about fanfiction is that it's like 'training wheels' writing? like 'oh it's fine to do that while you're still learning, it's easier than coming up with your own ideas'. and I have to say I have just never agreed with that.
in my experience it's actually pretty common for newbie fanfiction writers to gravitate towards coming up with OCs rather than writing about the canon characters (hence the infamous Mary Sue); this suggests that many people find that 'easier' than attempting to write about pre-existing characters.
I would say that recreating the characterisation, mood and general vibes of an existing work of fiction is in fact a skill in and of itself that's acquired via practice. A common compliment delivered to fanfiction writers is how well they have captured the spirit of the original work. Inexperienced fanfiction writers fail to do this.
When creating an original character you can, ultimately, say anything about them and now it's canon bcos you created them and you said so. conversely, well, if you are covering a well known song and start playing the wrong notes people will notice immediately.
In addition: a lot of fanfiction, IMO, is in actuality a form of metafictional literary analysis. a story where two characters sit down and talk about their feelings about a canonical event? literary analysis, which is of course a skill. Sometimes fanfiction is bad bcos the writer is not good at interpreting texts.
finally I have made this point before but you never really see anyone suggesting that fictional works based on existing public domain texts are on 'easy mode'. is it 'easier' to write something based on a copyrighted work than a public domain work? Of course it isn't.
I know I said 'finally' but I forgot a point:
A major strength of the transformative work is its ability to create dramatic irony. If a fanfiction's emotional resonance is dependent on being familiar with the source material that's not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it's a sign that the author has done a really skillful job of engaging with said source material.
he’s a little stupid 💔
