honestly the big reason why ryland works for me as a character despite being kind of obnoxious is that no one is pretending that he's cool. like it's one thing for a character to be annoying while everyone else in the story is constantly like wow you are so awesome! terrible. garbage. but there are only like three people in the entire universe who seem to genuinely like and respect ryland and one of them is an alien who hasn't met any other humans and frankly doesn't know any better. which i do find really endearing.

Guys, PHM has messed with my brain too much, i just saw ammonia, gasped and almost screamed out "PROJECT HAIL MARY REFERENCE!!!" Things like this have been happening for so long, I see a pentagon and think of rocky, I see someone talk about a hail mary in a sports context and I freak out, or worst of all i hear someone say the color green and I think about Adrian (the planet not Rocky's mate)
