Just in case you forget this exists.
It exists.
With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.

today was so hard please kill me
You probably get a billion asks a day asking you for tips and stuff but in the hopes that mine is one you get to read,, Do you have any tips for drawing mouths and teeth?
i think a good tip is to learn the different kinds of teeth our mouths hold and then build off of that formula for squish n stretch for cartooning.
if you wanna draw good monster mouths (or just.. people mouths too), look at actual animal mouths (or people mouths) and what sorta teeth they have and also for what purposes and why specific teeth are designed the way they are in nature. cause i mean… you could always just draw a jagged line for teeth (ie ‘’shark teeth’’) but imo it’s always just… extra nice looking and cool if you actually draw stuff so it makes sense! it shows!
this is a rly good post imo! covers the basics and has nice examples.
another tip is that sometimes simple stuff works best. that’s why i draw just a ‘’slab’’ of white for teeth most of the time, cause especially for people, if you draw every single tooth really detailed, it most often just turns out looking sorta creepy! unless im going for the creepy, i usually leave the teeth in pretty simple, big shapes.
imperfections are interesting! draw that crooked or gapped teeth mouth. missing teeth also add character. there’s… a lot of fun you can have w teeth design alone lol.
tips for drawing mouths tho…. hmmmm… well. i guess it’s more of a style quirk more than anything but i like to draw mouths that are… more like a hole in the face or something that breaks the face shape rather than just a projection on the surface of the face? if that makes sense lol. i like to draw mouths that the face has to adjust to rather than drawing all sorts of expressions on top of a never changing face shape.
my point being something like this. i feel like this is a ‘’it’s my style’’ kind of a situation so, whatever i guess. it’s not like i choose to use ‘’correct’’ perspective myself most of the time lol. also…. i like to push stuff.. pushing expressions to the extremes doesn’t Always work but boy howdy are they fun to draw lmao..
as to why i draw mouths like i do, my absolute favorite part abt them is that lil shape that they do and i exaggerate it lmao… so i guess my tip here is……… u guessed it………. look at a bunch of photos of people.
iiiii hope any of this is helpful, i feel like i could ramble and preach abt how much teeth give to a character and how fun and important is like… mouth acting or whatever lmao so i will just stop for now. writing down tips is always kinda… very tricky. also art is kinda? subjective? so. take whatever advice you will from this.

Landscape/Environment Tut
Okay so i got a few notes on how i go about Environments/Landscapes…so i’ll share a method thats easy to work with….bare with me its been a little while since ive drawn them Lol
First thing you want to start of with in your gradient background…use what ever is your preference. Depends on the setting, ima do some type of desert/dusty place.
You’ll learn that the Lasso tool is gonna be your bae when it comes to environments…that and its pretty useful. Now your going to be working in three tones, 1.Dark 2.Mid 3.Light and it will always be the darkest at the front fading to light towards the back…make sense? So you will have three layers for each one to make your life easier and Lock those layers so you will only color within that area. Make sure the dark layer is on top.
Here is where the fun kicks in…we add our dets, try to stay with each tone and dont end up making it all muddy so you cant distinguish each one. Now you can go about this any way you please, you can paint it all in with one brush ( for some reason people get anal about shit like that, thinking there great for using one brush…i think if you got tools use em if you know how to do it right.) Or you can use custom brushes…since this is a tut ill mostly use custom brushes to slap stuff around. Its up to you really, also use the lasso tool like i said its your bae.
The lasso can help define things better for you, so i wanted to add a structure type on the third layer. If you want to give an effect that the selection ive made is in front of the background right click your selection and invert it, add some lighting around the edges…only a little though you dont want to over do it.
Also if you’ve done something on a layer you dont want to mess up or paint on what you can do is create a clipping mask on that layer. Its kinda like locking the layer to that one so you dont go outside of the layer or ruin what you worked on. Make a new layer above the one you wish to attach it to and right click the newlayer, a menu will pop up, your looking for clipping mask. Once you clicked it the layer should look like what ive circled.
Once your done working on each layer we are gonna put in some mist effect, this is something that helps separate each section. So make a new layer between each of your three as shown in the image. Like i said you can use what ever method you like, i just use a soft brush or cloud/mist brush to get what i want.
Now we are going to add some definition to the image a good one to use is Curves. You can find this where your layer menu is, at the bottom you’ll find it, ive circled what your looking for. On the third image is what will appear when you click curves, all you need to do is drag the little square and you’ll see some magic happen. So adjust it to your preference. If you want you can also mess with brightness/contrast too. ALSO i would recommend adding a person in the image, it gives you an idea of the scale your environment is.
I was going to end it there but hey, ill show one last thing…its pretty simple. and that is some water reflection, we are going to turn the middle into water instead cause its a little boring right now. I merged all layers but the first one, you then want to make a selection and copy/paste. Free transform in the shortcut is ctrl T and do a vertical flip on it then adjust so its mirroring the top.
Now make a clipping mask like i explained earlier on the reflected surface and use the radiant tool…i think its called that lol it gives it more of a water surface like you see. For the image below it i used a custom brush which creates a water effect, aaaaaaaaaand bam you got you water now covering the area…easy huh.
And so this concludes the Tutorial and you have the end result. Hopefully that gave some tips on how to approach landscapes…they can be confusing sometimes on where to start. Enjoy and let me know if it was useful or not :P
i have some more tips but i have to get back to homework!!! i hope this was helpful anon
❥ TITTY TALK ❥
I think about this alot so I thought I’d share.
This.
and i thought only bob ross knew what was up
this single post is more useful to me then four years of art school
We did it in color study class on my college and it’s incredible the difference between using red/blue/yellow than cyan/magenta/yellow. The purple was colored like shit, so as the greens. Than we tried the actuall primary colors and it FELT SO GOOD!
I JUST TESTED IT IN MY ART PROGRAM AND HOLY SHIT
IT WORKED REALLY WELL
On the left we have dissapoinment; on the right, love.
Then why do they teach us that RBY are primary colours in Pre-KG????
To mess with our heads….
Or because they think that cyan and magenta are too difficult for kids to learn? Lame either way
Reshare to save lives
Okay, no. No no no no no no no no NO.
Listen up you fucks because I’m not wasting thousands of dollars on an art degree to watch y’all fuck up basic color theory.
Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors
If you’re using p i g m e n t.
Do you hear me? When you’re using traditional media, fucking actual goddamn paint, Bob Ross style, your primary colors are!
When you use paint, your primary colors are red yellow and blue and don’t forget it.
NOW THAT CHANGES COMPLETELY WHEN YOU GO FUCKING DIGITAL.
THE DIGITAL PRIMARY COLORS ARE RED BLUE AND GREEN IF AND ONLY IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO STAY DIGITAL, ON THE SCREEN, AND NEVER LEAVE THE SCREEN, AND OF COURSE IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO BE PRINTED. ON A PRINTER. WITH INK. THEN. AND O N L Y T H E N.
ARE YOUR PRIMARY COLORS.
CYAN.
MAGENTA.
AND YELLOW.
So say it with me folks!
Red yellow and blue, are the primary colors for traditional pigment that’s mostly used in paints and shit. You use red yellow and blue when you’re painting traditionally, Bob Ross style.
Red blue and green is light, which is what you’re painting with when you pick up your tablet and go digital.
CMYK is ink, and ink only. You could use cyan, magenta, and yellow as your primary colors in paint if you wanted to be a complete dick, but they’re not your primary colors unless your work is going to be printed using. i n k. The only time they could be considered the primary colors in a traditional medium is if you’re using ink.
Good day.
Also thatswhiskytoyou’s color mixing is bullshit because THIS:
Is my icon. I painted this using RED. GREEN. AND BLUE. AS MY PRIMARY COLORS and they turned out fine. Of course, I used the finger smudge tool first and then the color mixing tool and then the blur tool, but hey what do I know.
Clearly using the blur tool only doesn’t cut it.
“Oh but Leo!” You say. “You used cyan and magenta in that color wheel!”
Well bitch guess what.
this is the digital color wheel. I’d say I mimicked that pretty well, don’t you think?
Oh and one other thing, notice how Blue and Yellow are directly opposite each other on this color wheel? That’s because we’re dealing with light, and with light, yellow and blue are complimentary colors.
Which is why when you mix them, it looks like this:
Which is a pretty neutral gray tone: They cancel each other out on the rgb color wheel when you mix them together.
BUT WITH PIGMENT THE PLACEMENT IS DIFFERENT
If you’ll notice, yellow and violet are now opposite each other, meaning they’re complimentary colors and if you mix them, they’ll make a neutral gray.
But if you mix yellow and blue, same colors as before, YOU GET THIS:
Now keep in mind that the person in the video uses a darker blue, so they get a darker green, but the point is that it doesn’t make that neutral gray.
Now what happens when we mix yellow and violet paint?
Ah yes, you get a bunch of muted colors the more evenly you mix them.
What happens when you mix yellow light and purple light?
I see, I see.
OH AND ONE MORE THING.
They didn’t teach you about red blue green and cmyk in pre-k because when most of us were in pre-k digital art was still in its early stages and what fucking seven year old knows how to use a printer.
GUESS WHO’S NOT FUCKING DONE YET:
The reason the primary colors for light are so dramatically different from the primary colors for paint and ink is because your eye only receives combinations of red light, blue light, and green light. Our eyes do not have a sensor (cone cell) for yellow light. So when we paint with light, red green and blue are our primary colors. Because of our eyes.
Furthermore, paint primary colors are colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors together. For paint, they are red yellow and blue, because you cannot mix orange and green to get yellow. Mixing orange and purple paint does not make red. And mixing green and purple paint does not make blue.
Mixing blue and green paints will make cyan. Mixing red and blue paints will make magenta.
That’s why cyan and magenta aren’t primary paint colors.
However, you can’t mix yellow and blue ink and get cyan. You can’t mix red and blue ink to get magenta.
And that’s why cyan and magenta are the primary ink colors.
Brighter and stronger paints are created through tints and shades, through a thorough understanding of color theory and a few quality paint recipes. Not by bullshit posts on tumblr designed to mislead you.
how did the tumblr app icon manage to get so much uglier
THIS SHIT MADE ME GASP SO FUCKING LOUD!!!!
“he rolled in chalk, now he’s art”
how do you use the animation feature in clip studio paint?
First, clip studio makes a couple references to traditional animation in the terms it uses:
when animating traditionally, to be able to put your animation over a painted background, you draw on transparent cellophane - or cels / transparencies.
one cel is one image in an animation on a transparent backgroundor to put it in digital art terms - equivalent to one layer.
These are then kept together in a folder (at least, they are in CPS)
now, here’s clip studio’s timeline:
if you can’t see it on your screen, go to Window > Timeline!
you don’t really need to know the names of everything, but it helps to know where the different parts are.
The way the timeline works is like this:
you first need to create a timeline by clicking this button to actually be able to do anything
Then to animate, you create an animation folder, which is a special kind of layer folder. Any layers put in this folder will become cels.
for a cel to be visible, it first needs to be specified
one cel will be visible at a time
the quickest way to add cels is to click New Cel, which will create a new layer & specify it on the timeline
anyway, those are the basic controls for the timeline, but there’s other stuff you can do too!

Not directly, but Manga Studio has equivalent settings for both SAI & Photoshop, so most brush settings can be replicated in Manga Studio and vice versa!
My suggestion would be to write out your settings then replicate them.
For example, my manga studio brush settings are as follows:
Brush size: - Minimum diameter: 36
Brush tip: - Thickness > 15 - Direction of Applying: Horizontal - Direction > Direction of line
Texture: - paper texture - Method to apply: Normal
(with emphasize texture off:)
Then in Photoshop if I then set the min size, match the brush tip, and apply a texture I’ll get a pretty similar brush
