It’s a tiny town in the north of France Jack can’t remember the name of, and they’re sharing the limited space with an American artillery unit. It happens quickly, like these things do: a brush of hands at the bar, a look that lasts a hair too long.

He’s fair and sleight, a streak of oil still lingering across one cheek, and Jack recognizes the look on his face. The weariness that only comes from watching those around you fall to death like dominos.

It’s quick and clean. There’s no time for anything less than measured kisses and quick wrists. They don’t exchange names, but Jack knows he’s identifiable by his uniform. His rank.

When the American sighs against him, whispering fervent nothings, the syllables twang with an accent Jack can only describe as ‘Southern’; bringing to mind warm sunshine and sticky sweet fruit.

‘You don’t belong here,’ Jack thinks, coming down quickly from a much-needed climax. ‘None of us belong here.’

Then he does what he always does in moments like these. He steals a kiss, savors it like it may be his last, and departs as quickly as he’d come.

It’s only later he finds the token tucked away in his pocket, midway through inspection when he digs in his coat for a pair of gloves.

Things i saw at Penguins training camp today

-A mom pointing at a goalie and going ‘Look!! It’s Murray’….while pointing at Casey DeSmith.

-My jacketless boyfriend who somehow forgot ice rinks are cold.

-DeSmith falling and breaking his stick and then looking really sad and just shuffling around without one for a really long time until he spotted an equipment manager.

-Coaches refusing to play Sid and Geno’s lines against anyone but each other.

-A group of moms who loved Kris Letang, had a print out of his headshot from google images with them, and freaked out and started taking a million pictures when he skated by.

-Me staring at a member of the coaching staff for like 5 minutes trying to figure out if it was Gonch.

-Geno checking someone into the boards and then squishing him there for about half a minute (seemingly with just one arm)

-A group of children screaming LET’S GO PENS!! LET’S GO PENS!! …during conditioning practice.

-Sid and Geno looking wayyyyyy too invested in the results of a scrimmage.
