My final video -
My Final video can be seen above
Vimeo Link (with sound) - https://vimeo.com/272084436
YouTube Link (without sound) - https://youtu.be/aw-9Wt4lzUs
In case if the Vimeo video gets taken down I decided to also put the put the video up on YouTube without the sound.
Evaluation for the video -
This is an evaluation on my overall expeience
My video is now up on Vimeo, I am really pleased with the overall outcome of the video. Even with the amount of stress while editing this piece together, I found it both challenging and enjoyable. It was a great experience working with a team and incorporating ideas which has not been presented exactly how I had envisioned it to be.
The video was the best part of the project for myself. I enjoyed both the filming and directing process of this project. The editing aspect was very time consuming and at times difficult having not been used to Premier Pro for over a year. I managed to edit the video and colour correct my footage, the videos overall sync well to one another and flow as a sequence/story. However, the music was the biggest issue due to the length and the cutting. I cut the music fairly well, to the point where you cannot tell that it has been cut. It flows as an actual song and it is not noticeable. I made these changes over making different music ‘sequences’ in Premier Pro. Evidently, this was the best way to edit the sound and work on a different document to solely focus on the background music. Even though it took 2 hours to edit the music it was defiantly worth the many attempts, I think it sounds great and the lyrics and strong means of the words within the song work well against my footage/video with the cuts and action shots.
If I were to reshoot the video I would have really liked to have shot at an actual football pitch as I did plan before (seen in a pervious post). This would have been a more nicer location to shoot at with a lot of space to work with. Also the goal post would have looked more presentable and cool in my opinion. I could have also got some more shots of the overall pitch and work around with the stairs where the players/audience sit. This would have added more to my video. Besides this I am very pleased with my overall work.
Evaluation for the photos -
I really like my photographs, they work great as a series and follow along with a story of my artist. With both the football shots and the yoga shots. Combined with this idea I have also got some action shots which work well one after the other. I think the overall panoramic/landscape photographs work the best. Geraint told me to make it simple by adding these landscape shots, and I personally think they look great and focus on a lot more detail rather than two pages opposite each other being really busy and distracting from one another. If I were to take the photos again I would have focused on
Overall, it was a great experience and I enjoyed the project a lot. I think it was a great way to get away from my comfort zone and look into a topic in further detail. The topic of racism is very important to address especially to the younger audience and my chosen song and video combine to express this issue and it’s concerns to society today. Racism is a deep topic and can be expressed through different ways, my video focuses on the black culture and the controversial aspects to society today.
Facebook page -
I posted the photos on my Facebook page so that it was easier for me to photoshop the text rather than worrying about the images later. This was a more similar process compared to the other two. I moved the text on the right hand side, slightly above so that there was no distractions. This account is kept very simple like the Instagram page. The process can be seen above.
iTunes page -
Process of filling my way through the iTune’s template for my artist. I took a screenshot of an artists album on iTunes and simply made my way through by filling the text in with my own.
Instagram page -
I went from creating a simple dummy account for my artist and I photoshopped over the image to show more followers and more text about my artists new album.
Booklet
Review -
The third row is the back and front cover, I put it here so that it was easier for me to envision how it would look. Also, because I had printing issues with a fade coming through the page with the darker cover photo at the top of the paper. I wanted the back cover of this image to be different to my photo on the back of my CD cover, therefore I chose another action shot to follow through the yoga posses and then to the football action shot. Overall, I think it works really well, the idea is there and the photos look good as DPS standing alone to show the mood of my subject.
Again when editing I wanted to focus on the main colours, so: Yellow/gold, blue and green. The images follow through a story of where my artist is going and what he does. This reflects his music and the type of person he is through the close-up shots as well as the distant action shots of yoga and football.
Final video coming together
Evaluation -
I kept my editing very simple and realistic, I wanted to simply exaggerate on the main colours in the frames, so: yellow/gold, blue and green. Therefore, I increased the brightness slightly and saturated the right colours so that the video was corrected accordingly to the tones.
The titles are the same as my poster and album cover. I didn’t want to overpower this as well, I had looked at a bunch of music videos before deciding this for mine. I think the simpler the better and the quicker the text goes the more the audience are still following what is happening in the clips.
The main editing that took place for this video was for the music, I changed this so that it could accompany for my promo video. The real song is around 6 minutes. It was more of a headache trying to edit the sound track to fit, this was because there is a dramatic beat which carries on throughout the song, it was hard to match in the areas where I wanted it. However, I was able to edit this after 2 and a half hours of tweaking. I think it sounds better the way that I have it in my video because it doesn’t over power the clips and keeps the video very smooth.
I added this short message just before the video ends. I wanted to establish what my video is about and raise ‘awareness’ to the target audience. Especially because this video/artist is aimed to a younger generation. I think the overall message at the end of the video is powerful and summarises the music. I am extremely happy with the outcome of this piece of work. And I am proud of what I have achieved from the final outcome.
Poster
Review -
Again I wanted the poster very simple, I wanted to include the social medias as well as the apple music symbol. I looked at different posters on my way home a few days ago (seen in another post). I found that the posters that I had seen were too busy and over powered a lot compared to how I would have wanted mine to be. However, with having the simple ‘pre order now’ makes it simple and easily visible.
Back cover to my album and inlay
Review -
Back cover - this is one of my best photographs from the bunch, I think it ends the story of my artist and his album really well. The action shot shows my subject ready to score a goal with a lot of power/force/determination seen in his face.
Inlay - This image will be cropped so that the post/pitch will only be seen. I wanted to use the side of the post for this so that this can be seen behind the CD evidently. I chose the post because it follows on with the story to the back cover and simply shows the location in which my artist is in. I also blurred the photograph so that it is not overpowering, the frosty feel adds to the overall feel to the CD and is not too distracting as a whole.
CD printing
This is my final album printed at The Print Space
I am happy with the outcome of my project and the overall printing (as mentioned in the pervious post). I think it looks very professional and engages the audience to want to know more about the artist and his ideas behind the album. I didn’t have time to take photographs of the inside of my booklet but I was pleased with the way that the images looked there too. I was happy that the DPS bleeds did not get cut off in the middle of the images as this is where the photographs are more important seen as my subject is always in the centre. The booklet almost opens as a lay flat, so the details are not mistakenly hidden in these cropped dimensions.
Printing -
I have researched several different places to print for this project. However, nothing has worked right for me. I was looking to print my booklet and CD at https://www.printed.com/checkout but they do not deliver in time for the due date of this project (29th May). So I had to look around in store a bit and still did not find anything that was suited.
Long story short, I printed at university due to issues that I had gone through while trying to find a reliable place to print professionally. So I asked the guys at The Print Space in Ravensbourne and they told to print on ‘Page Wide Satin’ finish. I tested this printing to see if it would work and I really liked the quality of the paper. I printed around several times on different papers to be sure so satin, semi gloss and matte. The booklet came out slightly thick but I think it looks really good and works well for the overall CD booklet.
My main concern was the lines that were running through some of my darker images. So the main cover was the biggest issue. This was because the printer would create lines towards the edges. So I spoke to someone from The Print Space team and he rectified this issue by printing 6 images in different areas of the page to see if there would be at least one that I could choose from in the end. To also avoid these scratched I hand cut each image using a cutting knife (blade) and ruler to align my images properly and neatly. This was a more reliable tool to use as I had tried the guillotine board before this process. This issue was resolved thankfully, so there was nothing to worry about in the end.
The service was great and very reliable printing, I also ended up printing my actual CD there too and used the vinyl paper to print the CD covers and cut them by hand DIY style! Again the hand cutting worked best in my opinion, having tried to cut different ways through 5 copies to be sure that it was perfect.
The overall look and feel of my CD is great and I am extremely pleased. I am also happy that I left enough time to print and test during this time. It helped me see which papers were better and look for alternative ways as to how I could place the booklet/inlays/back cover etc.
Test printing cover photo -
I spoke to Geraint about this photo and his overall opinion on if anything needs to be changed. He told me, that usually the ‘Parental Advisory’ sign is not that big and that it would look better if it were placed at the bottom of the image on the right. He also said that the logo would look better at the bottom because it would be less distracting and the main focus would be on the centre of the image with the lead in lines from the right hand side of the image. This is because the image is usually read automatically from the right hand side, so the main focus for this image would want to go directly to the centre where my artist is.
Therefore, I will change the sign and shift the fonts etc and reprint in uni again
Cover Photo
This is a test edit of my front cover to my CD/posters.
Review -
I changed the artists name to ‘MASON’ mainly because it sounds better and relates to the artist more. It is simple and catchy and goes well as a single name for his music.
I personally think this works really well as an album cover, it is very minimal and draws attention straight away to the middle of the image where my artist is placed. The three lead in lines add to this where the attention is straight away divided to the centre.
I wanted to edit this photo to make it look really dark and mysterious, therefore the dark editing and the colours drawn to the blue and yellow works evidently not giving too much away about the artist and also shows a hidden identity. I noticed, this makes people want to know more about the artist and who is and what kind of music is expressed through the character.
Premier Pro Editing
I have began to put my best clips into Premier Pro, ready for editing my promo video as I have finished most of my editing for my photographs.
I have many cuts which flow with my project to make the video combine into a story about my subject. This will be seen through cuts, transitions and fade transitions.
Inspiration for album cover -
The posters that I have seen visually in train stations and at the O2, include information of when the album is out or if there are any concerts taking place. I think after seeing these posters, I want to make mine very basic so that it is not too distracting from the overall image. Therefore, I will crop my image in instead to make it portrait and move the text/titles around slightly to fit the frame. Then below this I will add ‘avaliable on ....’ with social medias perhaps to add to the gap at the bottom of the image.
Editing my photographs
I decided to edit my photographs by showing their strong tones of colour. The blues and greens in the outdoor images were really striking, I thought that I could make these colours really stand out my photographs. As for the indoor photographs with the yellow and blue, I wanted to make these colours the centre of attention.
I edited a range of photographs, this is because I wanted a selection to choose from. I really like my photographs and it was a hard time choosing which ones that I liked the most. With this said I will also be putting my photographs into the temple to see what works best, as well as a test print to see the outcome of the booklet and post format.
