Temple of Hercules by Sogs Karim Via Flickr: The Temple of Hercules, its towering columns visible from Downtown, was built in the same period as the Roman Theatre below. The temple stands on a platform at the head of the monumental staircase. The temple afford a tremendous panoramic view over the city centre that is particularly striking at sunset.

Week 30 theme: hands ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ On the highest hill in Amman sits Jebel al-Qala’a, which is the site of the ancient Roman Temple of Hercules, constructed during the reign of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161–80). Two giant pillars are the all that remains of the huge temple and this Hand of Hercules. Experts believe that parts of the temple and statue of Hercules likely toppled during one of the area's periodic catastrophic earthquakes - the statue fell to bits, but unlike the temple, all except the hand and elbow disappeared. It is estimated the statue would have measured upwards of 40-feet (12.2m) high, which would have placed it among the largest known marble statues to have ever existed. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ © All rights reserved.
