Stories in the Stars
Every once in a while a dream project comes along, and illustrating Stories in the Stars was one of them for me. My brief was to illustrate all 88 constellations according to the official associated image and technical map assigned by the International Astronomical Union, but also to try to find a way to make them my own and to illustrate in particular the wonderful, intriguing and often strange stories that brought them into existence.
The writer Susanna Hislop has skillfully crafted a collection of wonderful and charming stories, as well as putting the constellation myths into the historical and social context of when they were offically created. Each background pattern I made somehow refers to an aspect of the story, and my aim in my drawing process was to try to create the atmosphere of her writing in as simple a way as possible. I also tried to always contain the official star shapes (the dots and lines in pink) within the negative space of the starshape object/character/animal so they are easy to see. I hope that readers might be able to use the illustrations to help to find the constellations when they look up at a dark sky as well as finding illuminating stories about the stars that lie above us.
One aspect I find particularly great about this rendition of the constellations is that in this book you’ll find forgotten perspectives, constellations as viewed not just from middle aged 18th century white guys, but also from other parts of the globe, from a feminist perspective, and even from the viewpoint of a dung beetle!
Many many many thanks go to the amazing editor Sarah Rigby at Hutchinson and the brilliant designer Will Webb who both did a stellar job of crafting this project into existence, as well as to Susanna Hislop for creating such wonderful content to work with. With thanks also to the rest of the team at Hutchinson and the printers in Italy.
