I'm back, maybe.
Also, damn, look at that hair momentum.
So I uh…wanted to try out that new brush set I reblogged a little awhile ago and ummmm
wow.
Wow, I’m super late on this article, but I just now saw it and was happy to see confirmation that Bayonetta’s hair isn’t short because of some Samson’s hair plot or something. It’s just short because Bayonetta is a fashionable lady who changes her style all the time and short hair can be stylish too. So good on you, Platinum Games!
birthdays are hard.
I mean, just look at how her hair moves here.
KILL LA KILL CM 3
Really excited to see Kill la Kill finally debut. What I've seen so far shows a lot of promise with regards to the hair animation. Hopefully they can maintain at least half that quality throughout the series.
Also, watching this made me realize I need to post a lot more Gurren Lagann on here.
The Four Devas and Satsuki from the Starter Book
I should really try to find more examples of wet hair as well, since it moves and falls differently than dry hair.
Some good animation examples of both short and long hair in here.
This one by Imaishi Hitoyuki, however, takes a far more angular, noticeably stylized approach, and so the hair movement is similarly stylized and definitely exaggerated.
I'm doing three posts today of the same character from Kill la Kill but drawn by different artists in different styles.
This first one by Yajima Sachiko has a very smooth, even approach, and although certainly not photorealistic, there is a sense of consistency and simplified realism to the style, so the hair movement is fairly realistic if a little exaggerated.
The somewhat disheveled way the hair falls over Kino's eyes has a gentle weight to it that adds a sense of softness to the drawing.
In this illustration by Kuroboshi Kōhaku, Kino's hair is a lot more stylized, but there's still a great sense of wind to her hair as well as her fluttering trench coat that capture a sense of adventure and possibility.
Unfortunately, I've been unable to find the artist for this. I've seen a few sources claim the artist is called Nori88, but I can only find four images connected to that name and they don't appear to be from the same artist. In fact, I think one of them is actually by the illustrator Kuroboshi Kōhaku.
So whoever drew this, they certainly have a good feel for drawing hair. It's a shame I can't find a better answer regarding the artist, though, because I'd love to check out more of their work if possible.
The drawing at the top of page 216 was drawn from life, but the rest of these drawings from Carnet de Voyage of Hillevi are drawn from memory, and thus the hair, and the lines in general, feel far more dynamic. The dynamism is at its highest, unsurprisingly, during the moments of passion on page 206, and are another example of how increased hair movement can help add more energy to a scene.
Craig Thompson's lines tend to be very fluid and loose, but these portraits from Carnet de Voyage give a good sense of gravity.
