STILL THE FUNNIEST THING EVER
The act of terrorism in Charleston has absolutely terrified me. Saddened me. As much as I love the South and what it means to be Southern, society never lets me forget that I am a Southern BLACK woman. Society never lets me forget that in the media, to the police, and to some people in America, I am viewed as less than human. That I am not afforded the same privileges and rights as my White counterparts, coworkers, and even friends.
I wish that I could stop seeing this violence and racism on the news. I wish that I wouldn’t have to talk about these things with my students. I wish that we could acknowledge the discrimination that people of color experience every day. I wish that we could have frank conversations about the institutional racism that I experience every day.
Acts of terrorism like the shooting in Charleston, the shooting in Chapel Hill, the shooting of Tamir Rice, the shooting of Mike Brown, and the shooting of Trayvon Martin are not singular incidents. They are products of the society that we’ve created.
