it’s interesting for like. All that Connor prides himself on being smart and logical he can’t predict the consequences of his actions for shit. Wasn’t he studying this stuff? Bro is stupid. Okay in Connor's defense ☝ This particular experiment was just to see the absolute limit a person can experience rage, which they observed and went "woah, neat!!! anyways" and moved on forever. So he's still very new to actually internalized human emotions and learning how they work firsthand. He doesn't always get what actions will trigger what response, since people can cry when they're overwhelmingly happy or when they're sad and they can laugh when they're at a mental breaking point or when they're having fun. It's confusing.

So yeah, he expects that Max isn't going to be happy with him at first, but he didn't predict just how upset she would be and the fact that she's apparently not letting it go no matter what. Oh, he did a bad thing? Okay now he'll do a good thing so that you'll feel better (: Wait why are you still upset about the bad thing, did you not just see the good thing? Girl move on.

But you're right in that a perfect world they would be two idiot best friends on opposite sides of the spectrum. Left brain and right brain typeshit.

is it still (for lack of a better word) fun for connor to interact with max while holding the prospect of escape for others/eternal imprisonment with Him over her head? Because I don’t think having your new best friend hate and fear you and start having a massive uptick in self destructive behaviors is. Something that would feel good?

No, it sucks so bad and he hates it. He doesn't understand why she's upset when he tells her to make the choice of self-sacrifice, isn't that what she told him was important? Why is it a big deal then? Why isn't she practicing what she preaches? And while it's already incredibly infuriating for her obviously, it's even more so for him because he just doesn't get it. He's trying, but it's not making any sense, what is he doing wrong, he's doing it exactly like she taught him.

He doesn't get why they still can't be friends now or why things can't go back to normal. When they first began their friendship, she didn't think he'd be able to take her home, so why is she getting all bent out of shape about it now when she was perfectly content to just hang out with him forever? He doesn't get why she hates him, because he's done far more "good" things than "bad" things so that should mean he's a good person overall.

Which leads to the next emotions he learns: frustration, anger, desperation

on a brighter side, what do max and connor usually do together that they find fun or engaging?

Max is a very social person, she can yap your ear off or just dick around all day, the world is her oyster. More often than not it's Max doing her own thing while Connor follows her around to observe and/or comment on, which then leads to her explaining different things about human nature.

Yeah, throwing rocks at warehouse windows is destruction of property, but it's fun and no one is getting hurt, so it's fine :) But also it's bad to demolish buildings. But it's good to go a little apeshit now and then so that you don't keep it bottled up. But it's also bad to take your anger out in overly destructive ways.

You can't really blame Connor for getting mixed signals sometimes.

Connor admiring Max's cryo-slept body for god knows how many years so he can find a way to keep her forever with him.

awawaa. there is an interesting possibility for tragedy here in that like. 1. In trying to preserve and continue the happiness and peace and friendship he finds with max, connor completely destroys it and dooms them both to a sort of joyless drawn out dissolution where connor has tasted companionship and will now never truly have it again and max is a fucking bug in a jar and 2. Max’s being social and wanting to reach out and maintain hope and see the best in people and. Create/Get Back to what she had on earth creates this terrible monster of a person to know who loves you desperately but doesn’t really respect you and is never ever going to Have To respect you and now you can never go home again and your choices are: Kill Yourself, let everyone else go home and be alone with your captor forever (???), or do nothing and stay in your post apocalypse with a dwindling food supply and people who know you had the choice to sacrifice yourself for them and didn’t. She’s in a hell partially of her own making 😔

And you know what, that's the absolute worst part about it.

Max taught him empathy, now he cares about her.

Max taught him about grief, now he refuses to let her go.

Max taught him about making a sacrifice for the greater good, and he put that moral dilemma back on her.

Every decent bit of humanity she showed him he turned right back on her in the end, twisting her words into something selfish, but not entirely wrong either. It's like when a three year old starts turning your logic back on you and you can't be mad about it because that's what YOU taught them to understand.

does connor have the technology to keep max alive at all? does he know? that unless he gets rid of the frequency she’ll likely die of alcohol poisoning or [checks notes] liver cirrhosis or heart failure?

Yeah he could, if he did a little more research beforehand, but he could def at least keep her in a suspended animation for...reasons :^)

Also Max doesn't know it's the frequency that's making her sick, since she and the other survivors can't hear it and it only plays through radios/TVs. If she did and told him, he would stop it.
